24.01.2022 FUN FACT An IgG test is typically performed when the foal is 12-24 hours old. A sample of blood is collected and the level of immunoglobulins that the foal has absorbed is determined. An IgG result of >8g/L (>800mg/dL) indicates that there has been adequate transfer. An IgG result of 4-8g/L (400-800mg/dL) indicates a Partial Failure of Passive Transfer... An IgG result of <4g/L (<400mg/dL) is referred to as Failure of Passive Transfer. There are a number of different IgG tests that can be performed either on farm or by your veterinarian.

17.01.2022 Laminitis in Pregnant Mares Late pregnant mares can suffer from episodes of laminitis. The specific cause is still under investigation; however it is currently proposed that the increase in body weight from the growing foetus and underlying Equine Metabolic Syndrome may predispose the mare to laminitis in the later part of pregnancy. These mares often have a history of repeated laminitis episodes. Lameness often gets worse when the soluble carbohydrate (sugar) content in th...e mares diet is increased. Lush green pastures, grain and molasses contain high levels of soluble carbohydrates. Prevention of laminitis in the pregnant mare can be difficult as there are still many aspects of the disease that are unclear. Starting the breeding season with good quality hooves, and appropriate body condition, maintaining regular trimming and exercise and reducing the percentage of soluble carbohydrates in the diet of mares with a history of laminitis are all important factors in managing these cases successfully. The 1-2-3 Rule As a basic rule of thumb to follow, at: 1 hour: The foal should be standing. 2 hours: The foal should be nursing.... 3 hours: The mare should have passed her placenta (fetal membranes). Foals that dont stand and nurse soon after birth can become hypoglycemic and lose the energy to stand. In addition, they are prone to infection if they do not ingest colostrum as soon as possible after birth. See more

08.01.2022 Some of our SEG Ambassadors had a cracking weekend. Clay Sadler competed at Coolah Campdraft and won the Junior Campdraft with his mare Jewel. Sophie Edmonds was competing in the Sydney Western Riders Series of which she won the Junior Breakaway with Jack and also won the 1st Division & 2nd in the Junior Barrel Race with Kirra. Hannah Kelley competed in Tamworth finishing in the Top 10 CCN2*-S and qualifying for 3* with Redlord. Well done to all our riders
