Paul @scorpowines is renowned for paving an impeccable pathway to the delights of Mornington Peninsula #Chardonnay and #Pinot Noir with his well established #Aubaine & #Noirien wines. Likewise, his estate renditions of these two varieties grown on his #Merricks North vineyard have long belonged to the top-flight of the region's single-vineyard wines. Less well known are the pinnacle wines of the ...estate, made only in exceptional years and from the best parcels. The name comes from Paul's red-brown, clay-rich soils, which are derived from tertiary #Eocene volcanics dating back some 40 million years. The 2010 #Eocene Chardonnay was the debut, with this wine made again in '13, '15 and '19. A first Pinot appeared in 2017, from Paul's high-density #Abel clone plot ("the word 'stunning' comes straight to mind," was how Campbell Mattinson began his review). This exercise was repeated in '18, while newly released from '19 is another Pinot Noir, this time from Paul's original #MV6 plantings dating back to 1997. These wines are grown on Paul’s ‘97-planted home block in Merricks North, with the 2019 #Eocene Chardonnay a selection of the best parcels in a top year. There are two Pinots bearing the Eocene label: one all MV6 from the original vineyard, the other all high-density #Abel vines planted more recently. All of these wines are excellent.
