22.01.2022 What is the cost of living? The Cost of Living Board Game is a life-sized 3x3m board game by Vinnies Australia created to help young people develop a greater understanding of life when living below the poverty line. Over the last several weeks our Year 6s have played the game together, taking on the challenges, scenarios, highs and pitfalls of everyday life for a person living on or below the poverty line. The realistic nature of the game (think Monopoly), ensures that youn...g people understand how difficult it is to live on welfare, and how not all those living in disadvantage have a choice of how they got there. One turn around the board represents a week, in which students are tasked with making decisions based on their financial and personal situation at that point in the game, with the aim of staying above the poverty line. Thanks to Jayne of St Vincent de Paul for visiting with our Scotchies and facilitating such a sensational hands-on learning experience!

22.01.2022 Big round of applause for Old Collegian Tom Powell ('19), one of the newest North Melbourne Football Club recruits after being selected at pick 13 last night! A ball-magnet, Powell averaged 35 disposals, nine clearances and six inside-50s at under-18 level, where he won the McCallum Tomkins Medal as the best player in the SANFL Under-18s. Callum Twomey (AFL.com.au) says of Tom, "the midfielder does what he does so well: get the ball in his hands at stoppages and then feed i...t out to runners. Powell is great in tight spaces and is also able to push forward and kick a goal, having kicked three in a game this year." Congratulations and good luck Tom!

22.01.2022 Congratulations to Old Collegian Tom Powell ('19), who was recently awarded the 2020 McCallum Tomkins Medal for the best player in the SANFL Under 18 Competition! Tom became the first Sturt Football Club Inc. - SANFL player in a decade to win the coveted individual award, attracting maximum votes on four occasions including when he racked up a staggering 47 disposals against West Adelaide in Round 10. Invited to SA’s NAB AFL Combine, Powell is considered to be a strong chance to be selected in December’s AFL Draft having also been named in Sturt’s best players nine times this year.

18.01.2022 2020 has been a weird year in sport, but through all the distance and difficulty, Adam Holland continues to crush the rowing competition! Recently Adam competed in the Virtual Head of the Charles Erg Regatta, named for the Charles River which separates Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts. This year the event transitioned to a global remote event, attracting over 2,600 entries from 477 clubs around the world. Adam was awake and ready to go at 1:30am local time to account... for the time difference and rowed to a commanding win in the U17 Male Live race with a time of 15:24.300 - more than 35 seconds faster than second place! Adam also claimed 1st place for the participatory Men's U17 Race, where times are submitted over the course of the weekend. Amazing - well done Adam! We are told he fielded his first enquiry from an American university before the regatta had even finished!

18.01.2022 Recently some of our students have been making Christmas decorations and greeting cards for the children of Bushfire Kids Connect, a group aiming to create connectedness between children in the Bushfire impacted regions! The idea of Bushfire Kids Connect was originally created by Sebastian Ascott (Year 3) and his Mum Carly after their home was hit by the uncontrolled Cudlee Creek fires in 2019. Many children in the group lost their homes only 5 days before Christmas last year and were incredibly grateful for the hand-made gifts from our Year 3s!
