23.01.2022 In 2010, I was one of 19 players, 3 coaches and 2 support staff who embarked on the IBAF 2010 Women’s World Cup in Venezuela. Our goal, our dream, was for Aust...ralia to finally step onto the podium for the first time in history (after finishing fourth at all three previous World Cups!) The trip, the World Cup, turned out to be like no other before it, and certainly no other after. Ten years have passed since the World Cup, and I just don’t think many people outside of the team’s close connections really know what unfolded, what we went through, both on and off the field. My goal with this video was to try to bring to life the amazing, somewhat still unbelievable, but totally unforgettable moments that will forever bond the players and staff. For those who don’t know who I am, on the field I represented Australia at six World Cups between 2004 and 2014. Off it, I’ve tried to do my bit over the years to promote women’s baseball whenever and wherever I could. Because unfortunately, women’s baseball isn’t on the same rung as many women’s sports in Australia who have sponsors, funds, staff, resources or all of the above. We aren’t even on the same ladder. Outside of Baseball Australia, the team doesn’t get much in the way of publicity or promotion, and a lot of what has been done or achieved over the years has come from the players and coaches. But this is the way for a lot of women’s sports and instead of complaining about it, that is where I came to this project. It has been a passion project, something I completed over the last few weeks in my spare Melbourne Stage 4 COVID-19 lockdown time. And I can’t write this without giving some advanced warning for people who are expecting Michael Jordan’s Last Dance. I certainly wish I could have done more. The players, the staff, our achievements deserve more. While putting this together was an awesome (and at times very emotional) trip down memory lane, finding and collating content proved challenging. Like a lot of teams do nowadays, back then we didn’t have a team photographer or videographer, and limited photos and even less vision was published by the event. Also, the World Cup was held in a way back time when people didn’t carry phones with them at all times! In fact, most players didn’t even take phones to Venezuela, and we were told not to take cameras to the ground due to security reasons. So I feel this is the perfect time to send a special shout out to our superb EO Anne-Maree Adams and Physio Joni Ralph-Wilkie who took my 2020-style (low res, slow frame) camera to the field each day and, where they could between their duties, took time out to capture some memories for us. Thank you! I sincerely hope that this video transports my teammates straight back into those amazing moments; that it provides player’s families and friends with some insight into our experience; and also I hope those who didn’t even know we existed (or probably thought we played softball!) learn something new! Most importantly, however, if it inspires more girls and women to take up baseball, get back into the sport, or simply start following the national team, then this was more than worth it! In light of the declaration by the state government of a State of Disaster... for Victoria from 6pm this evening; all baseball has been cancelled for the next 6 weeks. This means: No Junior Baseball - trainings or games No Senior/Junior training at all! 17.01.2022 Hi All, Due to today’s announcement and the current situation unfolding across the State, as a club we have decided to suspend all club activities until further notice. We apologise for any inconvenience caused but we believe it is in the best interests of our club members health and safety. As much as we miss playing baseball and socialising with you all, our priority is still to be as responsible as possible, follow all guidelines and advice and protect the health of our... community. We hope a return to our Junior competition may resume in the coming weeks but the situation is an unknown. We will keep everyone up to date as information comes to us. 05.01.2022 Afternoon Everyone! You may have seen a recent article by the Bendigo Advertiser in regards to school closures around Bendigo. As a result, many community sport...s in Bendigo have cancelled their activities as a precaution to growing concerns around Covid-19. Reflecting on the current situation, ALL Junior Baseball activity will be suspended for this week. Sports Victoria will be meeting at the end of the week to deliberate on where Junior Sport in Victoria stands and if the decision will be made to cancel Junior Sport across Victoria. We want to take the time to allow Sports Victoria to deliver their advice and then make the appropriate decision regarding the Junior Baseball Season. The Bendigo Baseball Association is taking this direction to ensure the health and safety of all its members. We thank you for your patience and understanding during this difficult time.
