25.01.2022 From way back in February, before all the madness of the World.

24.01.2022 Hi all, I'm still on hiatus here on Macleay Island, and still painting boats. We (the young fella and I) finished off the final details for the RL28 and moved it off the stands. Now, the exciting part. Setting up the Hood23 on the stands and finally getting some paint on Dad's boat. Scroll through to see what we've been up to :)

21.01.2022 Hi all, Just recently a customer was referred to me by Pete & Suzy at Newton Signs. Dave wanted his wheels from his classic bike pinstriped with a gold stripe either side of the spokes. He had recently replaced the tank on his Triumph and wanted the wheels to match. The challenging part of this job was that the centre of the rim painted in maroon had a very jagged (and wobbly) edge from whoever had painted it, so the stripe had to be wide enough to cover the imperfections. Just scroll through the pictures and you'll get the idea :)

21.01.2022 At the moment I'm experimenting with imitation gold leaf because I couldn't get my hands on the real gold leaf. Just trying it out to see if it's as good as real gold for surface gilding and reverse gilding on glass. I'll keep experimenting before I come to a conclusion. :)

18.01.2022 A friendly, easy to talk to service that will understand your needs, so you can be given the appropriate advice for your sign requirements. Having worked in the sign industry for 38 years, I have a long and varied knowledge of pretty much everything signs. Whether it’s about assembly/fabrication or if it lights up, whether it’s printed or painted, is vinyl graphics or computer drawn images, if it has wheels or it floats, you know that the person you’re talking to is the guy d...oing the job. I’ve had some strange requests over the years, so no signage need is too strange to find a solution for. Products - Window Graphics - Vehicle Graphics - Signboards - Corflute Signs - Prefabricated Signs For DIY Installation - Temporary Or Limited Budget - Acrylic Panels Services - Graphic Design - Conceptual Consultations - Installation - Free Quotes - Hand Painted Signs The person you deal with from beginning to end of a project is the same person, which makes communication much easier. If by chance I am ever unable to do a project, I’ll obligingly recommend the next best suited person to complete your work. If you’re unsure of your needs, just call for a free quote or a consultation.

18.01.2022 Hi all, news from my hiatus on Macleay Island. I'm here to help paint my Dad's boat, but being a little island that has limited resources, we've had to do a deal to get the boat up on stands. The owner wants his sail boat (which is currently on the stands) painted and striped before we can put Dad's sail boat on the stands and get started on his paint job. Scroll through to see where we're up to with it. :)

17.01.2022 Hello to all, I'm still visiting my parents in the Redland Bay Islands and this post I'm determined to show y'all that I've actually laid hands on this boat. So far I haven't been in any of the posts seeing as how I'm the one documenting the job. This post I've gotten hold of some of my Dad's shots showing that I am indeed painting his boat, and am now starting on the graphics. ... Just scroll through to see where we're at with it.

17.01.2022 From the rainy island of Macleay, in the clime of Redland Bay. Just some quick sketches, because I know it's been a while since I've posted. I'll try to get a bit of colour into the next one :)

16.01.2022 Hi all, ...just an update of the gilding job. There's always room for improvement, but for the limited materials involved I'm reasonably pleased with how it came out.

14.01.2022 Sometimes with even the simplest of jobs it (any inanimate object generally) seems like it's fighting you all the way to the finish line. Here's a little weekend job that was supposed to be a nice relaxing, creative distraction from our current lock-in to keep me busy.

12.01.2022 Well here I am, still on Macleay Island (Redland Bay, Qld). This post the boat is off the stands, back on the trailer, and back at Dad's place for the final touches. I've painted it yellow, so all that's left to do are the stripes and signs. If you scroll through the pictures are all captioned.

12.01.2022 Well, hasn't the World been interesting since my last post! Easter in isolation (as we are all supposed to be), and I had this little job to keep my mind busy. A nice couple with a beach house down south wanted a welcome on this life ring. when I finished I realized that I needed a better light source. There's nothing worse than having your shadow all over what you're trying to work on, so it was time to update the easel.

11.01.2022 Wow, I've been busting my behind with work lately. It's a bit of a worry really, it was already cracked. I started a project a while back that FB saw fit to remove for some reason (I think it was when they changed the setout of everything). Anyway, I had an idea for a gold job on a folded, steel panel. Pictures this time show the design & prep-work on the panel. Next time it's GOLD!

11.01.2022 From the isolation of lock-down we're all probably trying to keep busy between paying jobs. This is a couple of sample boards I've done up of traditional painted letter effects.

07.01.2022 Hi all, I know I haven't posted for a while. I am just putting together a bit of a step-by-step of a panel I did a while back for this post. the impetus being a truck I've been striping today. :)

05.01.2022 Here it is!, my first job of the year. The guys from Audioscam have another single being released very soon, and I got to do the artwork for it. It's a pleasure to let your imagination go on things like this. Just scroll through the pictures to check it out. :)

05.01.2022 Gosh-darn it, just when you think you're finished I was reminded that it was supposed to be gold lettering. (oops!) After trying to locally source gold leaf I managed to find some loose leaf (instead of transfer leaf) to gild this design. If you scroll through the pictures, you can see the process of how the gold gets put on. A bit of extra effort, but I had nothing else to do in lock-down.... I was happy with how it turned out, so it's nice to hear that the customer likes it. :) See more

04.01.2022 For anyone designing their own signs (because with the advent of computers, everyone has the power to) it's easy to think that anything produced on the computer screen looks great, but there's more to it than that. There are frustrations to making peoples signs when they don't realize they're not getting value for money from their design. The following goes into explaining why you're better off with a credible signwriter to design your signage needs. To design any sign that y...ou expect to be read, you have to know the basics. If you don't know the basics, you don't know, or understand your mistakes. Beethoven (the great musical composer) said, "when you've learned the rules properly, you know how to properly break them". Which means the rules are still adhered to but worked around. It's the same with design. Taking offence to someone pointing out helpful advice to you does not improve your designing skills. Saying,"I prefer to do it this way" and "I think it should look okay like this" does not replace the basics, and it doesn't help you learn. We are all continually learning if we keep our minds open. The basics don't go away. The basics are real, and can improve your work when you know them. The basics are, - appropriate font choice - space, balance & appropriate proportions - subordination of text - colour contrast - panels or outlines to create interest - continuity of design, & unity (so all of the design ties together) This post, I'm focusing on colour. You can't expect a novice to learn about about colour, if they're being taught in black & white. You have to see colour to understand colour. Here's a few pages from a book I wrote seven years ago on the basics of readable sign design.

03.01.2022 It's always nice to see something you've created pop up, that disappeared long ago, and has been given a new life through a new owner. This guitar cut out of masonite (the choice of substrates back in the day) was originally painted/air-brushed in my back yard when I lived in McLeod Street and was part of a pair made for Buzz Music's Townsville shop. When the Townsville branch closed they came back to live in Cairns Buzz Music store. When that store closed it became the private art piece of Gordon Sheard. Now it's the crowning piece of decor for Reuben's guitar shop, and is mounted to his shop counter. I'm amazed at the condition and how great it still looks after all these years. Thanks to all for looking after, and appreciating it

03.01.2022 I was reminded of just how much my nieces have grown up just recently through a photo shared on FB and thought I'd share a couple of small portraits I did a while back. The beautiful Sare-bear, and the equally lovely Jessy Lynch (who's playing at a venue near you sometime I expect) These are on an A4 size canvas panel, and painted in acrylic. I've included a few shots of the girls from different angles so you can see how their faces can look different from image to image because of lighting, expressions etc., which is always a nightmare when you're doing a portrait of someone. There's nothing worse than getting a blown-out (washed out lighting) selfie to reproduce of someone you've never met. You need a good source material to make a reasonable likeness with adequate light/shade contrast to see the real depth of the person's features.

01.01.2022 Hi all, sooooooooooooo- busy I've been meaning to update this post to where I'm at with it. As you'll see from the pictures, the gold has been applied to the letters. ...which I have adjusted from the original artwork because at size I didn't like certain letter shapes and spacing.... Scroll on.
