19.01.2022 Claiming car expenses using a logbook? Don’t forget to record your odometer reading on Sunday 30 June. To claim car expenses using the logbook method, individual taxpayers need to keep a valid logbook: for 12 continuous weeks that is representative of your travel at least every 5 years (if your circumstances change, you may need a new logbook); which calculates the business-use percentage by recording each journey during the 12 weeks.... To do this, the logbook must record: when the logbook period begins and ends; the car’s odometer readings at the start and end of the logbook period; the total number of kilometres the car travelled during the logbook period; the number of kilometres travelled for each journey. So you know all this? ... keep reading ... What is often forgotten is that the logbook must also record: the odometer readings at the start and end of each subsequent income year your logbook is valid for; and the make, model, engine capacity and registration number of the car. So record your closing odometer reading this Sunday to make sure your logbook remains valid!

03.01.2022 This Sunday is not only Easter Sunday ... it is 1 April, the headcount date for Single Touch Payroll purposes. Every employer needs to count their employees as of that date, at a time that suits you. If you have 20+ employees on that date, you’ll need to report through STP from 1 July 2018. (It is proposed that smaller employers be required to report through STP as well from 1 July 2019.) Exclude directors and contractors from the headcount. Also exclude any casual workers w...ho were not on the payroll on 1 April 2018 or did not do any work for you during March 2018. There are other exclusions. If you need to report through STP from 1 July 2018, you’ll need an STP-certified payroll software solution, so talk to your software provider now. STP reporting is mandatory from 1 July 2018 for all substantial employers, although the ATO has the power to grant individual deferrals and exemptions. For more information, see: www.ato.gov.au/stp
