17.01.2022 These and other drawings will be displayed at QPAC 26 - 29 May with the production of THREE, a performance by @australasiandancecollective THREE includes choreographic works from Melanie Lane, Hofesh Schecter and Brisbane’s own Jack Lister. Basically my drawings started with quick sketches from the dancers in motion while in rehearsal for Lister’s piece Still Life, an amazing experience. 15.01.2022 There’s always so much to learn from the Old Masters! Michelangelo, like many other Renaissance masters, makes use of the rhythmic line to emphasise the living energy in the figure via the sense of force being dragged across the figure between structural points. Notice how this means that both the structured geometry of symmetrical forms (ribcage, pelvis) are as important as the flow and tensions of the soft tissues between them. Also notice how the rendering Michelangelo u...ses is often fairly frontal and while there is a shadow and light zone, he prioritises form above light, thinking more as a sculptor than as a painter. I believe this is an important approach to balance out the more visual or painterly approaches with this more haptic, or touch-based spatial sense. 1st term of 2021 of my classical life class starts on the 7th January. 04.01.2022 Went camping with a great group of friends this weekend. This is an iPad sketch of the campfire with the moonlit landscape beyond. I’ve found iPads not useful for daytime landscape sketching but at dusk and night time, if you turn the brightness right down, they allow you to work in a way that would be nearly impossible in paint. #procreate #landscapepainting #nightscape #ipadpainting #campfire #moonlight

02.01.2022 Undiscovered oil on panel 61 x 45cm Swipe for details and early life studies. Personal computers are now fast enough to allow us to generate 3D fractals, fascinating and endlessly detailed spaces that are at once familiar and alien, but are entirely generated by iterations of simple formulas. That was the basis for the weird landscape you see in this painting. Here I brought together elements of retro scifi novel cover art and ancient greek sculpture to make a kind of god...dess of wonder and exploration. Thank you to @carmen_olsen for the amazing interpretation of my ideas.
