02.01.2022 Condolences to family and friends of Nick Slater who was taken by a shark just off Greenmount Coolangatta on Tuesday. What a sad day... The attack happened in the approximate spot I've surfed for 30 odd years, along with my wife kids and family friends. Caught the best rides of my life right on the shoulder of that sandbank. I know I'm not alone there. No wonder more shark attacks are happening each year with around 25K whales migrating up the east coast annually (I read wha...le numbers will double every 7 or so years). Big sharks follow the migration and baitfish are moving all around at the same time July and September are peak times for the migration. (Australian East coast) Sharks scare the hell out of me.... and this has put the wind up me for sure... But the lure of riding waves runs deep... No yin without the yang I guess.... I'm still waiting for a anti-shark device that's guaranteed to work but until then best to follow the safe-as-you-can-be guidelines.
