24.01.2022 I'm an investor. A long-term investor, as we all should be. Which means, the long term health, wealth and sustainability of our planet and our country is more important than petty squabbles about short term winners and losers.... We had Dr. John Hewson on our podcast recently. He was fantastic. He's also head of the Commission for the Human Future. I'd encourage you to read this, and -- if you agree, and I think you will -- consider signing. Solving these challenges -- moral, environmental, financial -- will make us a better society, which is an end in itself. But even if you're just here to make money, guess what: solving these challenges will make for more long term economic prosperity, too... without which, we can't possibly hope for great long term investment returns. Sick of politics as usual, and vested interests arguing against logic because 'us vs. them' is more important to them than actually making a positive difference? I came across this, this morning. It's a fantastic, apolitical important approach to some of the biggest issues we face. Please consider adding your name: https://www.anu.edu.au//prominent-australians-call-for-pos

24.01.2022 Outside my office door right now...

22.01.2022 COVID is changing our economy and society, and not just in the short term. There are long-term ramifications for how we are governed, taxed, and what we expect from our elected leaders... https://us3.campaign-archive.com/

22.01.2022 You know how the ASX is all about super exciting stocks you need to own to beat the index? And how the boring crappy stocks are, well, boring and crappy? Check out this 5yr chart of Soul Patts vs. the All Ords.... (Discl: I own shares. No, I'm not pumping the stock. I *do* have it as a Buy recommendation, but I don't think charts tell you much about the future, so don't use that chart to do anything.) It's just a reminder that slow and steady -- even boring -- often wins the race (Source: Yahoo Finance) #ausbiz #investing #tortoiseandhare

20.01.2022 Brewarrina Fish Traps. An amazing sight, history, culture. And hard to not see it as emblematic of what we're doing to the environment (and cultures) at large.... You've gotta get out here.

20.01.2022 The more convinced you are about something, the harder it is to be rational when confronted with disconfirming information It's the same for the views of others Develop thoughtful views, but don't hold them so tightly that you can't change your mind.... In the interest of learning, changing and sharing: What's something (preferably investing-related, but anything will do) you've learned or changed your mind on, recently?

19.01.2022 Made it. And not a bad view!

18.01.2022 I mean, it's possible you think the CEO of your bank is underpaid. And it's possible your bank is your favourite local charity. And I guess you have so much money, you don't want the best interest rate on your mortage... No? Good! Read on......Continue reading

17.01.2022 "God help me. I was only 19" Today is Vietnam Veterans Day. We remember those who made the supreme sacrifice.... We remember those who came home with physical and mental injuries. We remember those who came home to a nation that shunned them. Welcome Home. Lest We Forget

16.01.2022 A bit of context to finish the week...

13.01.2022 Okay, one of those 'downside of social media' posts. I'm getting some scammers using the 'review/recommendation' section of my FB page to push scam financial products/advice designed to take your money. Suffice it to say, if it's not posted by me, please, PLEASE, ignore it.

05.01.2022 Getting a better interest rate is the easiest way for Australians to save maybe tens of thousands of dollars. But most of us don't do it. So let's help each other with the facts and motivation to pay less in interest.... Please share your #getabetterrate story, using the hashtag!

05.01.2022 The NASDAQ plunged 5% overnight. Our market will likely open down. Maybe by a lot. So what should investors do next? Join Motley Fool Australia's Chief Investment Officer, Scott Phillips, for a Facebook Live Q&A at 12.30pm AEST today.

04.01.2022 If your investing is based on the whims of a skittish market, you're headed for ruin. Up 1% on virus hopes... Down 1% on virus fears, blah blah blah. The market has nothing to tell you, other than the emotions of the other guy.... Invest for the long term, instead.

03.01.2022 If you're feeling smug because your shares are up, you would have felt great about owning Enron for a while. If you're feeling down because you shares are suffering, remember Amazon fell 94% at one point. Don't get carried away, in either case. Time will tell...

02.01.2022 Dateline: Brewarrina, NSW Look, it could have happened to anyone. I mean, how was I to know that, beneath the dry, solid soil on top, lay a sticky, clingy clay that would have stopped Usain Bolt in his tracks....Continue reading
