24.01.2022 Were back :-) As of tomorrow (Monday) morning the Scottsdale Tennis courts are open again for social play. COVID-19 Stage 1 restrictions are in force so please read and follow the points on the sign at the entrance gate. Hand sanitiser is there for your use. We would like to acknowledge the excellent work by Tennis Tasmania and Tennis Australia in formulating their guidelines for clubs, and Dorset Council for agreeing to the re-opening of the courts. To book a court at Scottsdale visit https://play.tennis.com.au/ScottsdaleTennisClub.
23.01.2022 A very special day for the Scottsdale Tennis club yesterday. After winning a promotion from Tennis Tasmania our club received a corporate box for the day at the Hobart International - Australian Open Series, including free food and drinks! The best thing was a behind the scenes tour guided by Tennis Tasmania CEO Darren Sturgess, including this photo of club members with Kirsten Flipkens, current world number 48. Many thanks to Tennis Tasmania, including Darren, Simonne and Fab for giving us a very enjoyable day.
22.01.2022 The regular season Summer Twilight is over - next week (March 9th) is qualifying finals, then the Grand Final on March 16th. The final league table saw: 1. Team Ally (Ally, Richi, Sam, Jill) 49 points 2. Team Jacob (Jacob, Bondy/Jade, Bernard, Bonnie) 32 points 3. Team Mono (Daniel, Danny, Jaimee, Daisy) 30 points 4. Team Nigel (Nigel, Jason, Kayden, Daniel) 29 points... Next week's matches will see Ally's team vs. Nigel's team and Jacob's team vs. Mono's team for a place in the Grand Final. See more
21.01.2022 On Tuesday October 15, once daylight saving and the school holidays are behind us, we will commence our twilight tennis competition for 2019/20. Commencing at 6pm, our first week will be a general hit for enjoyment where we can see how many players we will have, and our basic gradings. The actual competition will begin on October 22nd. All players welcome, we play mixed doubles in teams. This year we also have our new floodlights on Court 3. If you cant make it on the 15th but want to play in the competition, or have any general questions, please be in touch.
18.01.2022 This is always a great local tournament for Tasmanians. Excellent atmosphere, great players, super-friendly and you get to be very close to the action. A number of us from Scottsdale and surrounds head down each year, and 2020 will be no different. https://www.hobartinternational.com.au//mertens-headlines/
17.01.2022 Yes, thats right. 25% off the normal court booking fee at Scottsdale in the North-East. Why not stop off for a game on your way to, or back from, your day of mountain-biking at Derby? We have three excellent courts, and a couple of excellent local bakeries close by. https://play.tennis.com.au/ScottsdaleTennisClub. Scottsdale club members can, as always, play for free :-)
17.01.2022 On Wednesday night Scottsdale Tennis Club hosted the first in an eight-week fun, social tennis program called Open Court Sessions, aimed at new players or perhaps people who havent played for a while. Thanks to those members who helped out, to Tennis Tasmania for your support, and for the participants who all seemed to enjoy themselves. We hope that this will continue to grow over the following seven weeks and we get more people from around the North-East to discover the merits of the great game of tennis.
17.01.2022 Junior tennis development is the most important part of every club - its not about making champions, its about juniors enjoying social sport and outdoor interaction with others. How do we get more young people to play and enjoy tennis? The JTDC is looking for ideas.
16.01.2022 This photograph of the tennis club at Scottsdale in 1901 is of interest for so many reasons. Scottsdale Tennis Club - Tasmania will find it interesting for the... tennis players, equipment and attire. Scottsdale Mechanics Institute Hall will be interested to see the back of their hall (virtually unchanged today). We know the names of the players in this photograph, including Gofton, Holmes, Roberts, Salier and White family members. A lot of history in one image :-) See more
15.01.2022 Our Summer Twilight competition kicked off last night with an excellent turnout of players, and the new floodlights on Court 3. With three games being played between six teams it was a long night, but we will continue to see what works best and will tweak the format to keep everyone happy. Great to see everyone back in the swing. Photo credit: Kerrie :-)
15.01.2022 The Grand Final result came down to the wire, 3-3 (25-24) with a win for Nigel's team (Nigel, Jason, Kayden and Daniel) over Mono's team (Daniel, Danny, Jaimee, Jill). Thanks to everyone who made the 2020/21 season such a success with many new players and great improvements in the quality of the tennis played. In case you were wondering about the photo: Kayden was missing, Daniel T was standing in a hole, and Danny D was taking it all very seriously :-) Sam T was awarded 'Player of the competition', and the Encouragement award went to Bonnie.
14.01.2022 With the help of Tennis Australia and Tennis Tasmania we have rebuilt our club website: https://play.tennis.com.au/ScottsdaleTennisClub. You can now join our club and pay your membership fees via this website. For existing members you can pay your yearly subs via this website - either pay by credit card or select Cash and give the money to Nigel or Jill. Most of our existing member accounts are linked via your email address (you will be need to enter/reset a password), but if your email address doesnt work please be in touch and we will reset it for you. This is the future of the world - everything done on-line or via your smartphone :-) However, if you still prefer the old face-to-face payment method with cash we are still happy to accept that. Only $20 for individuals and $45 for a family for a whole year of tennis.
13.01.2022 Due to the current school holidays, we have decided to kick off our twilight tennis competition on Tuesday 16th, not the 9th as previously advised. Ally Mercer will be in touch soon to arrange the teams for the new season. We hope that everyone is fit and well, and raring to play :-)
13.01.2022 We're back :-) As of tomorrow (Monday) morning the Scottsdale Tennis courts are open again for social play.
12.01.2022 Good news. The Tasmanian Government has announced that we are moving to Stage 3 restrictions tomorrow. Here is the link to the tennis staging matrix: https://www.tennis.com.au//06/Return-to-play-Tasmania-v08.. For Scottsdale it doesnt mean any major changes, though we are allowed to start any pennants and coaching. Lets all get back out there (weather permitting) :-)
11.01.2022 The Scottsdale Tennis Club spokesperson says that the Tuesday night competition will commence again on February 5th. Weve had a long break, so everyone should be keen to get back into the swing.
11.01.2022 Anyone interested from Scottsdale or surrounds? A great opportunity to help out and get close to some of the great women players.
11.01.2022 Earlier this week, in time for the Tuesday night twilight competition, we installed our new net on Court 3. Many thanks to Dorset Council for the grant funds to purchase the new net, and to Danny D. for his help in installing it. We now have good quality nets on all three of our tennis courts at Scottsdale.
11.01.2022 Some good news... National Cabinet will meet again this week on Tuesday and Friday, with a decision to be made around potentially easing restrictions inside the next week. Tennis Tasmania staff have been actively planning and developing a range of guidelines, including a return to play matrix, which we look forward to putting into action in the near future. Ultimately we will need to wait until Dorset Council informs us that the courts are open again, but at least there is some light at the end of the tunnel. In the meantime, Premier Peter Gutweins consistent message could not be clearer, Please continue to stay home, to save lives.
10.01.2022 Well the Annual General Meeting has come and gone for another year, and we would like to welcome Jill Ranson on to the Executive as our new Secretary. The twilight competition is due to kick off again on Tuesday October 9th. Ally will send around a text message for you to nominate for this years comp. Hopefully the weather will improve soon so we can get some more games in :-)
10.01.2022 It has been disappointing to read ill-informed comments on the Scottsdale Tennis courts recently, including the comment that Scottsdale Tennis Club wants to fence off one court, as reported in the recent North Eastern Advertiser. We want to make it clear that the courts we use have always been public (a key has always been available through Council, and we only licence the courts from Council). Any suggestion to fence off a court would make two courts unplayable, as there... is not enough room to put a fence between two courts, so we would never have suggested that. As a result of moves from Council we have had two meetings with Greg Howard and Council staff, and are progressing a couple of ideas, with input and support from Tennis Tasmania. We will be providing members with details via a newsletter when the twilight competition kicks off next Tuesday night. See more
09.01.2022 Annual General Meeting, August 10th, 9am at the courts, to be followed by social tennis from 9.30 onwards. If you have any questions or issues, items for the agenda, or if you are interested in serving on the Executive please talk to Mono, Jill or Nigel.
09.01.2022 The Annual General Meeting of the Scottsdale Tennis Club will be held at the clubrooms at 9am on Saturday August 29. If you have any business for the meeting please let Nigel, Jill or Mono know beforehand. If you would like to be on the Executive to help move the club forwards please be in touch.
08.01.2022 Tuesday night 6pm: Mono's team (Daniel, Danny, Jaimee, Jill) vs. Nigel's team (Nigel, Jason/Keath, Kayden, Daniel). Come along for the tennis and/or the BBQ and presentations, and for a social hit after the big matches. If you feel inclined, please bring along a small plate to help with the BBQ catering, or just offer your talents to help cook the snags, and don't forget to bring a drink (or two).
08.01.2022 If you Book-A-Court (click the Book Now button on this page) at Scottsdale Tennis club we make good tennis balls available free for your game, so why not come and play. https://play.tennis.com.au/ScottsdaleTennisClub
08.01.2022 Tuesday night twilight competition starts up again next Tuesday, Feb 2nd, at 6pm. Dust off those old tennis shoes and let's get back in the swing. Please let Ally know ASAP if you are not available so that we can arrange fill-ins.
08.01.2022 Some more improvements are happening at the Scottsdale Tennis Club, courtesy of Dorset Council. The small grassed areas in front of the club house are no more, and are being replaced with non-slip, plastic grass. Work in progress, soon to be finished.
07.01.2022 We are pleased to announce that our little tennis club has won second prize in the Tennis Tasmania club code competition. Our prize is a box for eight people at the 2019 Hobart International, including hospitality, for the Wednesday 9 January day session, and a behind the scenes tour. Amazing! We invite any club member who wants to put their hand up for any part of this prize (e.g. 1, 2, 3, 4 people) to contact a member of the Executive Committee. If we dont get enough numbers from club members we will open it up to the broader Dorset community. Why not come down to Hobart in January and enjoy the excellent tennis on display with many of the worlds best female players?
07.01.2022 This just about says it all :-(
06.01.2022 Ash Barty has become the number one female tennis player in the world!! Brilliant :-) What could your children do if they played tennis at the Scottsdale Tennis Club? Photo from: https://www.abc.net.au//ash-barty-claims-tennis-w/11239490.
05.01.2022 Preparations have begun at the club for the long-awaited installation of lights on Court 3. The initial step is trenching to get the power around to the far end. The first piece of trellis has been removed, so please take care when using the courts for the next few weeks. The club is working closely with Dorset Council, and we thank them for their support and efforts.
05.01.2022 Scottsdale Tennis Club were successful in obtaining a grant from Council to purchase a new net for Court 3. The net has been ordered to replace the fairly dilapidated one that is currently there. Rotten weather at the moment, but as it improves and warms up we look forward to all being back there on the courts.
05.01.2022 A worthwhile cause if you are going to be near Rosny Park in late March :-) Rosny Park Tennis Club

04.01.2022 The Holmes family arrived in West Scottsdale in 1882, and their story is well told in Chapter 11 of Jenny Bicanics book Down the Sledge Track (available from... the Scottsdale Art Gallery Cafe). Their social life centred around the game of tennis played on their family court in West Scottsdale. At one time the Holmes family took on the Scottsdale Tennis club in a competition (and beat them). One son, George Donaldson HOLMES, was born in 1877 in India, came to West Scottsdale as a young boy, and moved to Canada in 1905 where he became a dominant tennis player, and in 1921 (aged 44) represented Canada in a Davis Cup tennis match. Although deaf from typhoid, he had won the City of Winnipeg tennis championship nine times, was Western Canada champion, Manitoba grass court champion and Red River (U.S.) champion. George died in Canada in 1955, aged 78. Photo kindly supplied with permission by the Holmes family (Holmes of Kildare). Additional information from the Winnipeg Lawn Tennis club (http://www.wltc.ca/our-history/). See more
03.01.2022 This little MP3 player was left at our courts, probably on Sunday. Please be in touch if it is yours - we have it in safe keeping :-)
03.01.2022 Some tips for tennis players for COVID-19 awareness, courtesy of Tennis Tasmania: Before you play Stay at home if you:... Have been in contact with someone with COVID-19 in the last 14 days Have been overseas or exposed to someone with COVID-19 in the last 14 days Have flu-like symptoms Or are in a high risk health category, for example elderly or have a pre-existing medical condition. Social distancing Tennis holds a unique advantage as a sport which requires no direct contact between players. You can also: Touch racquets instead of the regular pre or post match handshakes Keep 1.5 metres away from other people while watching or attending an outdoors tennis activity
03.01.2022 Congratulations to Scottsdale Tennis Club - Tasmania on launching Book a Court. Its great to see clubs being proactive to attract new players
02.01.2022 At 3pm this afternoon, in line with Government and Tennis Tasmania guidelines, we are moving to Stage 2 in our recovery from COVID-19. This sign will be installed at the courts tomorrow morning for our normal Saturday morning social hit starting at 9.30am. Why not come down for a hit?
02.01.2022 For the 2019/20 season the Scottsdale Tennis Club has dropped our annual membership fees from $45 to $20 for a single, and from $100 to $45 for a family. Now that we have Book-A-Court installed we are keen for locals to play as often as you want on our beautiful courts. Annual membership means that you can always book a court for free throughout the year, and dont need a key to get in (you just book a court and get sent your own personal access code), so it represents excellent value for a great outdoor sport. To become a member please contact us via Facebook or see Jill Ranson or Nigel Mercer.
01.01.2022 Perhaps the great sport of tennis is making a comeback in country towns? Good story from the ABC.
