17.01.2022 IMPORTANT As many of you may know, there is currently a mouse plague in NSW. Due to the amount of bait put out to control the mouse population, this has lead to a huge spike in rat bait poisonings in dogs in the area. This has created a nation-wide shortage of the antidote for rat bait poisoning (Vitamin K). We currently have limited stock on hand. We are urging all our clients to consider their mouse control programs this winter either using other forms of mouse/rat co...ntrol, or removing access to the baits entirely. If your dog or cat gains access to the rat bait, the first course of action is call the clinic on 6352 2996 or 6352 4378 (after hours), as we can make your pet vomit the bait within 2-3 hours of ingestion of bait. This is our preferred treatment option currently. Signs to watch out for with rat bait toxicity are any signs of bleeding this includes white gums (anaemia), swellings under the skin and unexplained bruises, nosebleeds, coughing blood, vomiting blood, blood in stool, swollen joints, and difficulty breathing. These signs occur 3-7 days after the rat bait was ingested. Treatment with Vitamin K must continue for 3 weeks for first generation rodenticides (warfarin, diaphacinone) and 4 weeks for second generation rodenticides (brodifacoum, bromadiolone brands). Unfortunately we cannot give a timeframe on when more Vitamin K will be readily available. We will keep our clients up to date when we know more.
