This was the last board made here which is another one for my freshly updated quiver , after a short stint in a temporary spot to make the last of the boards for Xmas I’ll be moving into a fresh (for me anyway ) factory early in the new year. 16.01.2022 So our Colab is done . It’s been great working with Dean from @layr_x on this one . We put our minds together to come up with the aesthetics that would work with one of the dozen or so of his favorite photos he had taken from the last 8 years , we ending going with this super cool bike rider pic and married that up with a Gatsby looking theme that I think works really good. Handshaped a Rocket fish and glassed the bottom in a deep dark maroon color with hand made fins ...the same color . Topside we did a black and maroon deck with the photo inlay glassed under the clear top , sanded the bottom and rails to a Matte finish and polished the deck , This board and other from the likes of @roosterbrand @mtwoodgeesurfboards @dmshapes @albumaustralia and couple of others that are keen to put their building skills to the test will be displayed for a couple of evening events on the Gold Coast in the near future (dates and venue to be announced ) Stoked to be involved ! 12.01.2022 The most underrated and over looked for importance in surfboard building in my opinion is Sanding , this is me sanding this board for the second time ,the first sand is when I sand the hot coat with 80 grit sand paper to sand back the build up of fiber glass and resin to get the board flat and smooth and follow the correct contours of the shape. Then I recoat it with waxed resin (finish coat ) and sand that with 150 grit and then 240 grit sandpaper to finish up with a perfe...ctly flat and consistent finish all over , after this it will be hand sanded with wet and dry paper in the 400 -800 range, no pro tech acrylic spray needed , All up there is a couple of hours in sanding work which is about the same time it would take most shapers to handshape a board . So at the end of the day the sander has his hand on the board as much if not more than the shaper and basically gets zero credit at the end of the day ,you’ll never hear anyone ask who sanded this unless they did a really crappy job of it. Hats to off the sanders out there that do this day in and day out , it’s bloody hard work living in the sanding room and they’re keeping the industry alive as it’s essential to your board working correctly and lasting for more than a few months . I for one wouldn’t want to do it everyday , I really enjoy doing the whole process as it keeps things fresh everyday. 06.01.2022 This is another video of myself sanding , this is the first sand of the Filler / hot coat. This time with glass on fins plus fluted fliers and channels . They’re a bit of a head ache but I find if i have some kind of system and set of processes and chew it off in pieces i get a pretty effective and efficient end result , I also find getting onto the sanding before the hot coat cures to much makes for a easier job over all. 05.01.2022 Well over the weekend I finally got a chance a to get this one wet. Myself and a mate took a little drive up to the Famous Snapper rocks ,rainbow bay -Greenmount stretch of sand , Thought it give it a little break down on how it went . Well to start with those of you that have surfed this fabled sand bottom point will know you don’t really get to pick the waves you want there . You just have to catch what ever comes your way before you swept down to Coolangatta beach . Wit...h a solid swell the Rainbow bay river was in full swing with millions of cubic meters of water moving . Which made it tricky to surf , but this little ripper went really well . The rider (me) wasn’t so inspiring but I managed to pick off a couple that gave me chance to tell what it had. To start with it paddles like a weapon with the flat deck and 2 5/8 of thickness I had high hopes it would . Turns on a dime although the waves where more down the line I managed a couple of cut backs and a snap or two. Felt free through the turn like twins do and no sense of sliding out , think the channels out the rear might have helped with that and it got up flew down the line with a couple of rail to rail pumps , I know it’s hard to judge a board on only a few waves but I was very happy with what I felt under my feet. Of course I have a couple of little things in the back of my mind to modify a little ,like I’d probably put a little more curve in the outline between the feet as it seemed to be a little tricky to initiate the turn , but that might have also been that waves had a little chop in the face which made it a little tricky to engage the rail . Maybe just pull the wide point back a little might also help , Other wise I think this little board has lots going for it.Fast and loose with good control . The other thing I’d really like mention is the @gryptalite_surfsystems clear grip Iv been sent from the States , Wow ! I was a tad dubious how it would work as when it’s not wet it not very grippy at all but as soon as I stood on it in the ocean it was fantastic, I’m really impressed , clear thin and easy to install , Im now a convert, go check them out ! . . . #sjs #custom #surfboard #for #you
