21.01.2022 It was an honour to attend the Scouts Australia Tasmanian Branch AGM last night representing Tasmanian Labor. I was delighted to see Fiona Roberts, Tony and Jen...na Lumley all receive medals - all of whom my family have known through our involvement in Howrah Scouts. Congratulations to all the award winners - such amazing service to the community and to supporting young people to be their best.

15.01.2022 The Governor-General is deeply saddened to advise Australians that His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, has passed away. It is my solemn and me...lancholy duty to advise that His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, has passed away earlier today. I have informed the Prime Minister, and I understand the Government will make further announcements concerning funeral arrangements and how Australians can express their condolences, in due course. This is a sad and historic day. As we mourn, we should also reflect and give thanks for His Royal Highness’ lifetime of service, devotion and commitment. Service beginning with his time in the Royal Navy including during the Second World War when he was mentioned in dispatches while a young sub-Lieutenant on-board HMS VALIANT. Devotion to Her Majesty The Queen, whom he married in 1947 and lovingly supported throughout his life, and to the entire Royal Family. And commitment to the Commonwealth and the many hundreds of organisations including many here in Australia - of which he served as Patron and for whom he was a passionate advocate and supporter. His Royal Highness visited Australia 21 times over the years, including on each of Her Majesty’s State Visits. He was a popular, engaged and welcome visitor to our shores. His impact was profound not least on the more than 775,000 young Australians who have participated in The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award since it began here in 1959. Many Australians will have a personal memory of His Royal Highness and many around the world will, in coming days, reflect on his remarkable life and legacy. As we reflect and remember, we think especially of Her Majesty The Queen and the Royal Family, who have lost a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. On behalf of the Australian people, I extend our deepest condolences to Her Majesty and family, the people of the Commonwealth and to all those who share in this sad news. We give thanks for the Duke of Edinburgh’s service, his loyal and loving devotion to Her Majesty and his commitment to Australia, The Commonwealth and all her people. May he Rest in Peace

14.01.2022 A very big congratulations to Brian Williams, Group Leader of our Blackman's Bay Scout Group who has just been announced as Tasmania's Senior Citizen of the Year 2021. BRAVO!

14.01.2022 Great News! We are pleased that the State Government has brought forward Stage 2 to 5th June, which allows most Groups to start meeting as usual, but, of course, meeting the appropriate Covid19 health requirements, such as up to 20 members to meet outside and inside halls. In addition, all our Group Leaders have been provided with checklists to ensure those requirements are met. For example, everyone is conscious that they need to have appropriate social distancing, that the... halls must have a least 4 square metres for each person, and hands washed or sanitised before and after a Scouting activity. Talk to your Leader about when your Group is ready to go, and lets all work together to make sure everyone gets back to enjoying Scouting. Welcome back to face to face Scouting. If you have a child who would like to join please give the office a ring on 6229-9385 (9am to 2pm, Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday). Mike Hovington Chief Commissioner Scouts Tasmania

10.01.2022 COVID-19 UPDATE Scouts Tasmania is fundamentally committed to ensuring the safety of all its members. Given the unprecedented events surrounding Covid-19 the Branch Executive Committee has taken the decision to suspend all face to face Scouting activities until 30 April 2020.... All face to face activities are to be suspended immediately. This is applicable to all meetings of Joeys, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers and Rovers, as well as Service Crews, Committee meetings, Heritage Centre and all other meetings of members. Scouts Tasmania Head Office will be closed to visitors until otherwise advised. Please contact by phone on 03 6229 9385 or on [email protected] As information and protocols surrounding coronavirus are changing, we will continue to review this decision and update accordingly. We encourage all sections to operate in a digital space. To work on programs and Award schemes and to stay in contact. We are all a part of a big community; we must support each other in this unprecedented time. The safety of every member is our focus, please stay safe and take care of each other. 08.01.2022 Unfortunately given the current situation with COVID-19 and in keeping with the actions of the Education Department, we have made the decision to postpone the 2020 Mariners Trophy. All being well, we will find an appropriate date later in the year. We know that this disruption will come as a disappointment to some of our youth members, particularly those older ones who may have seen this years event as to take a leadership role within a crew in their final year in the Scout ...Section. In line with the decision made at the 2018 Annual meeting of the Sea Scouters Council, those youth members who had not reached their 15th birthday as of the 30th of April 2020 will still be eligible to participate in the event should it be held later in the year. It is important though, that this does not discourage older youth members from making the move to the Venturer Section when it is due, and we strongly encourage them to look towards events like the Maritime Challenge instead. If you need further information please contact Isaac Smith, Branch Commissioner Water Activities
