22.01.2022 Playing tonight in the Screen Gems theatre ... Original review on Gems: Screen Gems 80's Flashback ...... Once Upon a Time in America (1984). Extended Director’s Cut! An absolute masterpiece that just happens to contain a scene which is my all time favourite one in any movie I have ever seen! A look back ... As a movie buff and a serious student of cinema, this film is great significance to me. Although it is not my all time favourite movie, it does have one very special distinction: it contains a particular scene which is my absolutely all time favourite one in any movie I have ever seen to this day! I seriously doubt that will ever change! Once Upon a Time in America is an Italian epic crime drama, co-written and directed by Sergio Leone and starring Robert De Niro and James Woods. It chronicles the lives of Jewish ghetto youths who rise to prominence in New York City's world of organized crime. The film explores themes of childhood friendships, love, lust, greed, betrayal, loss, broken relationships and the rise of mobsters in American society. Based on Harry Grey's novel The Hoods, it was the final film of Leone's career and the first feature film he had directed in thirteen years. The cinematography was by Tonino Delli Colli and Ennio Morricone provided the magnificent film score. Few films in cinematic history appear to have had as many different versions as Once Upon A Time In America ... its original European version was just under fours long with the story being told in non-chronological order. The American wide release was drastically different because it came in at around two and half hours as the result of heavy cutting. The story was also rearranged into chronological order. And ... that was just the beginning of the different versions of the film that were to follow in different countries and on different types of digital media for home consumption over the years. On 30th September 2014 Warner Bros. released a two disc Blu Ray and DVD set of the film dubbed as the "Extended Director's Cut" with a running time of just over four hours with the story in non-chronological order. This version appears to be the closest to what director Leone intended and is the only one to see! Once Upon A Time In America is an absolute masterpiece and a cinematic feast that can be enjoyed many times over! Trailer ... youtu.be/5vrbUpDihxs

14.01.2022 This is a guest review for Screen Gems by Daniel Merry. Daniel’s post ... Halloween: 31 Days of Slasher Films.... 30. HAPPY DEATH DAY (2017). Christopher Landon. Although HAPPY DEATH DAY sets the film’s events in a time loop, the most interesting thing about it is the novel ways in which it subverts the tropes of a traditional slasher film, especially when it comes to the role of the final girl. Theresa (Tree) is an obnoxious and largely unlikeable sorority house sister who wakes up on the morning of her birthday in the dorm room of a boy she doesn’t know. As the rest of her special day progresses, she generally insults or blows off everyone she meets until she is murdered on her way to a surprise birthday party. That’s when the fun really begins. HAPPY DEATH DAY is very enjoyable and while it pays mostly lip service to slashers, it also neatly riffs off genre expectations to great effect. Jessica Rothe’s performance carries the film, but the supporting cast is also very good. The sequel, HAPPY DEATH DAY 2U, takes the film in a completely different direction but, with the exception of a few missteps, is also great fun. A third entry, HAPPY DEATH DAY TO US is in the works. Best slasher moment: Given that it’s not a true slasher, the kills are pretty lightweight. However, the sequence that ends up with death by bong is well staged and fun. 05.01.2022 As it’s Screen Gems’ 6th birthday, time to re-share its first ever review all those years ago ... Screen Gems 70’s Flashback ... Harold and Maude (1971).... Step back into the not-so-politically-correct, early 70s for this gem: quirky and dark, the blackest of black comedies! Ruth Gordon and Bud Cort are absolutely superb! This one is in the top three of my all time favourite films! A Look Back at Harold and Maude ... Frankly I don't really think that there is any movie in the history of Cinema that is anything quite like Harold and Maude. With a fantastical" (but highly plausible) story to tell and two leads many decades apart in age, the film works superbly within the parameters that it has clearly set itself. The piece has "balls" too because it covers a relatively "taboo" subject, it rips into some of society's "sacred cows" and it is not infected with the "disease" of political correctness because the early 70s was not tainted by that evil monster! Harold (Bud Cort) is a disturbed, death-obsessed, 20 year old man/boy who spends his free time attending funerals and staging hilarious fake suicides, mostly in front of his oh-so-conservative mother (Vivian Pickles). At one funeral Harold meets Maude (Ruth Gordon), a 79-year-old who has a zest for life. They enter into a weird but "magical" friendship and she exposes him to the wonders and possibilities of living. Harold's relationship with Maude changes his life forever. The acting of the principals is both crisply controlled and pitch perfect, especially Bud Cort: his facial expressions really convey his love for this older woman who is the only person in his life to whom he can really relate. There is one particular scene towards the end of the movie (you will know which one when you view the film!) that caused quite a bit of controversy at the time. As far as I know some prints were shown with the scene cut; most prints (if not all) now have the scene intact ... just as it should have always been! Harold and Maude has (thankfully) been released on Blu Ray; the richness of the colour never looked better and the Cat Stevens soundtrack is a joy to hear. Like Wuthering Heights in literature, there is no other film like Harold and Maude. It didn't do particularly well at the box office when it was first released but, through word of mouth, extended showings in American Arthouse cinemas at the time and video/DVD/Blu Ray media, it now has a solid cult following. It certainly deserves nothing less! I have lost count of how many times I have seen the movie and it is in the top three of my all time favourite films! Returning to it every now and again is like catching up with an old friend. As I always say: it is the blackest of black comedies and the very very best! See it, re-see it regularly ... you won't be sorry! Trailer ... youtu.be/hR-OojNoVDg
