Nowadays, most transport companies operate with "hub and spoke" providers rather than point to point, which is much more cost effective and environmentally friendly. This is more like parcels sharing the transport, rather than each driving in their own car.... What this means is that parcels are picked up by a driver on their regular route, taken back to the depot, loaded to travel between depots, then loaded for delivery in the local area during the courier's normal run.

The price can ...keep so low because all parcels are collected, taken to the companys central hub, sorted by direction and delivered anytime from around 3 days locally and up to 3 months internationally. -> Courier service will cost you more but your item will be handled by just the one person and is likely to be delivered door to door, with no depots in the middle, meaning there is much less chance of damage.
