22.01.2022 Don Harvison has one of his wonderful woodcarvings in Northshore exhibition. He says he tries to re-create in wood what he see in nature by hand carving my own vision of Australia’s animals, birds and sea life. At times a piece of wood comes alive on its own. With just a little imagination one can be quite creative following the grain, natural beauty and warmth of timber.... He collects his timber from trees and branches that have fallen to the ground. The weathered logs and stumps have a lot of character with interesting holes, grains and colours. He prefers to work with Australian hardwoods as each piece creates its own challenges resulting in a unique and satisfying sculpture with form and function. Check out more of Don's work at CAMPFIRE WOOD CRAFTt or Find him on Instagram .

20.01.2022 Some of the SQ members have worked with the wharf timbers old, tough and beautiful, and home to marine borers for years. Puggy Booth has created Northshore Aphrodite from Wharf timber and metal. Some of the SQ members have worked with the wharf timbers He says that Classical Greek sculpture signifying rebirth inspired the romantic idea that the Northshore redevelopment is in fact a rebirth of an old industrial site into a modern inner-city living environment.

20.01.2022 Julie Donaldsons drawing in wire, The Call of Dawn, reminds us of the rowdy harbingers of any day. These birds once perched in the tall river gums to search for food below. A wonderful connection between river life of the past through to now; and hopefully the kookaburra will herald the dawn for decades to come!

19.01.2022 Northshore Sculpture by the River And the work by Puggy Booth, Northshore Wharf Liaison, is directly carved into the iron bark piece of lumber retrieved from the old wharf timbers. It tells a story of the social life of the wharf workers!

18.01.2022 Exhibition Reminder: opening from 10am Saturday, October 3rd til 6pm on Sunday, October 11th This indoor exhibition shows a great diversity of materials: In clay, Susanna Doyle has captured a contemplative moment by the river. She says that water holds rich symbolism, a symbol of life refreshing, replenishing and restoring. Seated Figure in porcelain clay, allows a moment for the self to be still. Casting clay to bronze, The Pioneers by Rhyl Hinwood, captures the en...ergy and fortitude of the settlers who explored and surveyed the country around Brisbane. 17.01.2022 Northshore Sculpture by the River update: In the Indoor Exhibition will be Dean Ruslings Mr Muddie cast in bronze, and he says, When moulding a real specimen I give the foundry the credit not me. Marine life is my favourite to sculpt: as a hobby fisherman I have fished the Brisbane River myself. 100 years ago Im sure the river was far more pristine than we can see it today, I could imagine you would have clearly seen through the waters sighting big stingrays and the li...ke making their way around the mouth of the river and up the river looking for food whilst being hunted themselves. Mr Muddie , is one of the most sort after crabs to eat. The usual question when you pull a crab the size of Mr Muddie - where did you get him followed by the lie yeah, just up the brissy river, about 4ks in up the right hand side theres a little creek in the run off. 17.01.2022 UPDATE Northshore Sculpture by the River The Sculptures in the Indoor Exhibition show a wonderful diversity of materials and concepts. Wood carving is a much loved technique and these two sculptors illustrate how different it can be! Don Harvison works with recycled timber and fire. He says: It (Takin a Break) engages the viewer to consider the culture and life along the river as the foreshore continues to adapt, evolve and change.

17.01.2022 NORTHSHORE EXHIBITION Closes Dec 6th Not much time left to visit sculptures that expose some of the rich history of this area. "Remora " the Composite Steel and fiberglass sculpture by sculptor Ian Manley tells part of this history. The sculpture is a stylised version of the sucker head of the Remora fish that it uses to free ride on pelagic fish and sharks. The sucker is what distinguishes it and Ian sees it as a symbol to remind of the wartime café. A street has been ...named after the Café. Opposite the wharves, servicemen would frequent the Giuffrida family run fish shop set up on Eagle Farm Road, now Kingsford Smith Drive, adjacent to the wharves. The owner named it the Remora Café after the fish that was better than all the other fish. The river was a bustling busy port, and during the battle of The Coral Sea and many sailors set foot on the shores, always hungry and looking for a change of food from the mundane shipboard fare. Guiseppi's daughters did the cooking and waited on the tables, serving fish and chips to the many servicemen who had come from the ships, moored at Hamilton during World War II. The business grew very popular with the Italian American sailors, when the family started serving Sicilian spaghetti and meat sauce dishes. Sculptor Ian Manly, who visited the cafe and who married into the family, notes, I was lucky enough as a young man to taste Giuseppe’s meat sauce and ‘spaghet’, as he described it. Ian also carved the detailed wooden sculpture of an Americian sailor for the indoor exhibition All sculptures are for Sale.

16.01.2022 SQ members are looking forward to installing their sculptures during the last week of September. 15.01.2022 Some of the SQ members have worked with the wharf timbers a test for any tool, I imagine! A North Shore Encounter Leeanne Elms has carved the Wharf timber and combined that with bronze. She says, I wanted to observe the interesting possibility that the Brisbane River cod may have swum around this very piling when it was first installed. Now weathered and textured it alludes to both its past and present form. Be intrigued by this detail!

14.01.2022 Margaret Klucis is exhibiting in the Northshore Sculpture by the River exhibition. You might remember her work from the SQ members exhibition at Mt Coottha; she has been a regular exhibitor over many years. Her clay work has a quality of vibrant rawness which provokes the viewer to consider making and techniques, as well as the context or meaning. These qualities are explored in Yuggera Girl which will be in the Indoor Exhibition. All the works in this exhibition reveal ...in many and diverse ways the history, both natural and cultural, of the Brisbane River and especially the Hamilton Reach area. Margaret says "The Yuggera people were aboriginal people who lived in what is now Brisbane and the surrounding area. This work can lead us to an insight of that early history. There will be 48 sculptures to see in the Indoor Exhibition; all exploring some part of the industrial, residential, settlement and indigenous history. Below is a detail of "Yuggera Girl" See more

We are asked to contemplate the seemingly disparate systems of our urban landscape and the ever-contracting natural environment. And the Max Fabre Foundation Environmental Awareness Award went to Critically Endangered by Claudia de Salvo.... This is a series of crematory urns reminding us of the plant species and their habitat endangered by bushfire events. There were several thought-provoking works drawing viewers' attention to environmental stress around us. This is information is from the Swell Outdoor catalogue. 03.01.2022 When you visit Northshore look across the river or around the area and one of the things you first notice are the industrial cranes. Fred Beel with his creative mind immediately conceived this sculpture "Crane Dance". Before settlement the river was abundant with water birds, such as Broglas and other cranes. Sadly, many of these birds are now quite rare and now different type of crane now dominates the skies. So many visitors to Northshore have enjoyed this work. His public works include - Jirrawinny a major park piece South Hedland commissioned by Landcorp, WA.,3 Palms memorial Hedland Council, WA, Tear Drop workshop piece supported by FORM, WA,BHPIO entrance statement, Oresome designed by Fred and mentored by Jon Tarry, WA and Entrance statement at Newman Sedimentary Layering commissioned by EPCAD, WA.

WORKSHOP ON CLAY SCULPTURE TECHNIQUES Date: 14-15 November (Saturday - Sunday) If you are interested please reply immediately. The sculpture techniques I offer are to help in your approach to building with clay giving you a simple approach to construction and, within that, a freedom to adjust and refine the forms that are built. Subject matter is your choice though there needs to be some volume in the form you choose. Developing your individual creation in a workshop such as this displays the variety of subject matter that can be constructed with this technique. Please contact me via email [email protected] for any queries and for further information. Start dreaming!!!!
