24.01.2022 Presenting Sheila Newman, artist currently exhibiting 2 of her ceramic sculptures made during Covid lockdown. Sheila recently turned 89 and inspires everyone around her with her stories of travel, her OAM and not least her quirky, functionless ceramics.

22.01.2022 Today we installed the latest exhibition in CUBE - a collaboration between Mullumbimby artist Sam Wortelhock of Breakaway Arts and Brunswick Valley Landcare. A half-sized nesting box has been painted with local creatures who depend on hollows for habitat. Drop by the council chambers to check it out (showing until end of November) and stay tuned here for more info on nesting boxes and how you can contribute.

07.01.2022 A whole new perspective - by Elizabeth Lehmann This piece encapsulates our ability to take a situation and experience it differently. A hollowed log is transformed into a side table. A hole is not a hole. It is a feature. The deep ridges inside the centre of the piece tell the story of the hungry termites. It reminds us of the natural forces at play - and in particular that when we succumb to them and shift our focus to look for the the opportunities that are present- we a...re bound to find beauty. This side table is made from Red Iron Bark that was sourced locally from Andy Ceglinski at Wooden Anchor. I created it during the COVID lockdown. Woodwork is my creative outlet. It is my way of connecting with who I am. When I do woodwork, I am in my body, I am present with whatever comes up, I am challenged, I play and I feel empowered. I will spend hours planing and sanding large logs of timber to unravel it’s story. The number and shape of the annual rings telling me not only the age of the tree but the climate in which it grew. I am enamoured by the knots left from branches that once were and am fascinated by the patterns of the grain. To work with material that is older than me. To give bring new life to trees so that they will continue to outgrow us. To honour nature. This is what drives me. I see beauty in material and objects calling to be transformed. The Tip Shop is my playground where I discover discarded goods and turn them in to treasures. A rusty trolley is an industrial coffee table; Jetty cleats are the legs of a stool; and Concrete Formwork are picture frames. I am passionate about spreading my love for woodwork. I am grateful to be mentored by Patt Gregory from Woodwork for Women and enjoy assisting her teach joinery to others who want to learn. I am also volunteering to build a Tiny House with a charity, One Roof Byron in an effort to ease homelessness. The recipient of the tiny house is part of the building process and receiving this house will end his struggle with homelessness. My journey with woodwork started here in Mullumbimby and I am delighted to share my art with you.

05.01.2022 Did you know that many of Australia’s native animals and birds must have tree hollows to breed and shelter in. Natural tree hollows provide both nesting sites and refuge for our native species. Parrots, owls, possums, gliders, even kookaburras need tree hollows for breeding and survival. Land clearing, bushfires, and the removal of old trees in urban areas have resulted in the loss of old growth, hollow-bearing trees reducing the number of shelter and breeding places fo...r native birds and mammals and leaving them little alternative but to invade roof spaces. Competition for natural hollows from introduced birds such as Indian Mynas, Starlings, Sparrows and introduced Honey Bees, has further reduced the opportunities. Artist Sam Wortelhock has teamed up with Brunswick Valley Landcare to promote awareness and the installation of nesting boxes. Her brightly coloured box can viewed now in CUBE gallery until the end of November.
