24.01.2022 Context and place in sculpture Connecting the lines and bonds that join people, place, and meaning defines context in sculpture. Coaxing the materials to life is the natural consequence of, not the precursor to, that connection. In New York City for the unveiling of his first public sculpture in the U.S, Todd Stuart’s trip coincided with the inaugural Frieze art festival in June 2019. A visit to the exhibition drove home again the importance of context to sculpture.

07.01.2022 We’ve already in the age of artificial and automated intelligence. It casts a shadow over our vision of a human future. What will technology do for, or to, traditional sculpture? I recently evaluated a 7-axis CNC 3D router now used to make stone sculptures. Designers can plan and scan from scratch in a 3D CAD software package to control the router with amazing accuracy. Of course sculptors are drawn to getting it right up front, saving time, materials, and money, especially w...orking with an unforgiving medium like stone. One slip, and you lose the lot. The history of sculpture is the history of tools, but tools in human hands making artistic decisions. CNC technology is simply a new tool. It does a fine job creating the first foundations of a sculpture. However, it has no soul, no brain, and no sense of moral ambiguity to capture or inject emotionthe human X factorthat defines the essence of art’s value. It cannot understand that perfection is purely plastic, and imperfection gloriously human. Industrialised art simply isn’t art. At best, it’s craft, or just decoration. Technology has a role but the intervention of hearts, minds, and hands will always lift humanity above the machine. #sculpturelegacies #sculptureprojectmanager #technologyversussculpture See more
07.01.2022 Sculpture collaboration can help preserve a culture Walangari Karntawarra and Todd Stuart produce collaborative sculpture they believe can save Australia’s indigenous culture. Karntawarra is a Central Australian Aboriginal elder and figurative artist. Stuart is a white, contemporary Australian sculptor. Between them they blend Karntawarra’s dreamtime stories, themes such as family, and the inherent spirituality of the Australian land in a medium that pays tribute to 65,000 years of indigenous culture. Despite their different backgrounds both men believe the art of sculpture creates legacies that can preserve shared principles for all time.
