24.01.2022 If you have any ideas on what might help you with your degree now being online and student life, have your say! You never know that your idea may blossom and help another fellow student who is struggling.
24.01.2022 Hey fellow Student Nurses! Today I am getting ready for my final 6 weeks of placement, so I thought I might share a tip. In the PEP workbooks, we are told to write out personal and clinical goals that we want to achieve whilst on placement. In my first year, I never worried about it, but in my second and definitely my third year I have been writing out what I want to achieve. As I am about to become an RN, I want to be able to use these next 6 weeks to practice as much as pos...sible and do things I haven't had a chance to do yet. So here are my goals! I looked at the 2020 Scope of Practice Guidelines that are at the back of the workbooks and looked at things I have learnt but haven't really practiced. It is going to help me when I get on shift and something like a catheter might need to be inserted or cared for, I can put my hand up to do it under supervision. So before you go on prac, get in your mind what you want to achieve and for 2nd years, make sure REFEREES is on your list! Remember placement is to benefit you and for you to build your skills, so be prepared and give it your all. - Pip
22.01.2022 How do you visualise 1.5m? Today we’re using 7 kebabs as our measure. When it comes to social distancing it doesn't matter what you visualise as your measure, all that matters is that you keep a safe 1.5m distance from others.
20.01.2022 Three things that have saved me on placement and have stopped me from looking up things on my phone: 1. Clinical Reference Cards that go on my name badge. 2. The pocket sized Essential Aussie Drugs Handbook. 3. A small pocket notebook to write down words, acronyms, or procedures I don't understand to look up later and use in my reflections.... If you want helpful clinical tools, check out eNurse.com.au Don't be afraid to use these tools, they are there to help you. Plus it stops you from using your phone and people getting the wrong idea. I will go through more tips about placement during the Placement Info Session on Thursday the 24th at 6:30pm, https://zoom.us/j/98921218162 Have a great weekend! :)
19.01.2022 Hi! Me again! I have had some first years ask about assessments and not feeling confident in their academic writing. Everyone does their assessment set up different, so try and find a way that gets you in the zone and focused on getting the content down. From then on, there's Academic Skills. I can tell you that this team has done wonders for my writing skills, as I am not an academic and was at school 10+ years ago. ... I have done a quick video on how to make a zoom appt with them. If you are struggling with writing, use this great resource. - Pip

You will all be amazing nurses and should be so proud of yourself!!

15.01.2022 A new clinical best practice standard that changes the approach to peripheral intravenous catheters has been released by the Australian Commission on Safety and... Quality in Health Care. Each day, thousands of PIVCs fail in Australian hospitals, and we continue to accept this unacceptable rate of failure. This standard is a way of re-setting our approach. We need to reduce the burden of multiple cannulation attempts on our patients and to achieve this, a standardised approach to promote first insertion success is necessary, Nurse and vascular access expert Dr Evan Alexandrou said. 11.01.2022 Trans Awareness Week - 13th - 20th November 2020 WHAT IS TRANSGENDER AWARENESS WEEK? In 2020, Transgender Awareness Week will take place from 13-19 November. Th...is week is an important time in the LGBTIQ+ calendar because it raises the visibility of trans people around the world. During this time, allies and organisations around the country, and the world, participate in Transgender Awareness Week (also called Trans Awareness Week) to help raise awareness by amplifying the voices and experiences of transgender people to the wider community. The week is about bringing attention to issues of prejudice, discrimination and violence that affect trans and gender diverse people. More importantly it is also about celebrating the trans community, sharing their stories and taking action to educate everyone about who transgender people are. The week culminates with Trans Day of Remembrance on 20 November. WHAT IS TRANS DAY OF REMEMBRANCE (TDOR)? Trans Day of Remembrance is an annual observance on November 20 that honours the memory of the trans lives lost to acts of transphobia and discrimination. TDOR was founded by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor her memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence that year and began an important memorial that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance. TDOR is a day of gathering, togetherness, and community solidarity. We remember those we've lost, celebrate our strength in the face of adversity, and commit to fighting transphobia to create a safe and inclusive world for everyone. 07.01.2022 Nursing is an art, Florence Nightingale once said, so when one of our own nurses featured in a popular exhibition in Brisbane we knew we had to share. Helen Zah...os has spent time in ICU and ED during our pandemic response. Artist Ben Fuog entered his painting in the special art exhibition Salon des Refuses, run by Royal Queensland Art Society. Helen says it’s special to be involved in the portrait while history is being written during COVID-19, and during International Year of the Nurse and Midwife https://bit.ly/31Oun30. See more

03.01.2022 Is there any way to completely prevent dementia? The answer, sadly, is no. However, by managing the risk factors of dementia, it is possible to decrease the likelihood of developing it. It is never too early or too late to adopt a 'brain-healthy' lifestyle.
