13.01.2022 So here it is.. do you know the link between the Tre Re Magi, Bambino Gesù and Befana??? Read along to find out more.. The name La Befana comes from the word "epifania". [Epiphany is the religious celebration following Christmas which signifies the visitation of the Three Wise Men (Magi) to baby Jesus]. The legend is that the Tre Re Magi stopped along their long journey, knocking on the door of an old woman ‘La Befana’ asking for directions to Bethlehem. She took them in, giv...ing them something to eat and a place to rest while asking them about their journey. They explained that they were following a star (Stella dei Re Magi) to find a new king that was born, Bambino Gesù. They were making the journey to offer special gifts to the new-born king. The Tre Re Magi asked Befana if she would like to join them, but she refused, saying she had too much house work to do. The Tre Re Magi continued on their journey the next morning, leaving without Befana. But while she was cleaning, she had a change of heart.. she decided she too wanted to go along and visit Bambino Gesù. She gathered together some lollies as a gift and ran out after them, but by then the Tre Re Magi were long gone. She went along the journey, following the Star of Bethlehem, leaving lollies at every child's door hoping to find Bambino Gesù. 10.01.2022 Did you know Christmas celebrations in Italy continue until January 6... in a couple of days time children will be preparing for the arrival of La Befana (the friendly old lady with her broomstick.. mistakenly portrayed as a witch). Befana Eve is January 5, which is when many Italian children will put out their stockings in the hope that Befana will visit them on January 6 and leave a little gift.
