24.01.2022 I do love running and in the past few years I have really taken that on and gone in some events which have been really rewarding. For the past three years I did the Gold Coast marathon and this year I did the Byron to Ballina run which was 37km in sand and hills and that was very challengingI think it’s the after-feeling. The feeling of accomplishment, the endorphins so your head feels a bit clearer. We’ve got the Byron Bay fun run in October, and I did it last year and I w...as the second female to finish so that was pretty amazing but after the marathon I said I’m just going to run for fun. 23.01.2022 My family are from Italy originally and they came to live in Coffs Harbour in a small Italian community in the 50s and my nonna is still there. We do research there now in Italian hospitals, but my wife’s Brazilian so actually I speak more Portuguese than Italian. Our research is pretty cutting edge. In the Italian context we look at safety in hospitals and at the end of the day it’s about saving lives and having good managers and supportive environments. And it’s really well received internationally. We go to conferences and we can be the only Australians there and it’s all Southern Cross University and that’s really nice; it’s meaningful and significant". 22.01.2022 I got to go over to Dubai and do an internship through that degree so I went there for three months; it’s the largest cinema chain in the UAE. It was a little bit of a culture shock at first cause I had never lived out of home so basically it was like a reality check. I had to become more independent. It was definitely an experience and a half so I am actually thinking about next year going over there for a while...If it all works out. Mac Cameron #heartofSCU... 19.01.2022 Joel was the son of one of our staff members at Southern Cross University (Zoe Satherley). He had cerebral palsy and couldn’t stand or walk unsupported but Joel had a big dream and I was fortunate to play a part in it. I was talking to his mum one day and she said Joel had an obsession about climbing Mount Warning and really wanted to do it more than anything in the world. I said ‘why doesn’t he?’ and she said, ‘it’s so sad, he can’t do it, he would need a huge amount of su...pport’. But I reckoned we could pull it off. So Zoe and I managed to organise this crew of about 25 people who came together to get him to the top of Mount Warning. It was an amazing effort and a peak experience for all concerned. We all took turns, one on each side of him, all the way up. Everyone pitched in and when one team got tired or was struggling, another took over seamlessly. When we got to the last vertical rock face, there was someone sort of grabbing one foot, and someone sort of grabbing another foot or an armpit, and someone helping with his hands or pushing from behind. It was a wet day, a miserable day, one of those days where it was cloudy and we couldn’t see anything. But it didn’t matter when we got him to the top, he was ecstatic. I think it took about five hours. We all congratulated each other and Joel. It was a major achievement. Then someone said ‘now we’ve got to get him down again!’ Going down took even longer but it was just one of those experiences I’ll never forget in my entire life. Just this team working together for this one quite inspirational guy. It shows how people can work as a team to achieve the seemingly impossible. Unfortunately Joel has since passed away, but not before receiving an Australian Government National Disability Achievement Award. 16.01.2022 I think having a broader perspective on things is humbling. And I had that from travelling in Canada and the experience of working over there. It was awesome, totally different and coming backwell, I am a massive fan of SCU and the region. To be able to get up and go for a surf in the morning and come to work compared to in Calgary, Canada; they were very jealous of me. That experience resulted in changes in other areas of my life, so I feel like I am in a pivotal time in m...y life now, and I’m excited to see what the future brings. 16.01.2022 I ran out of money in Germany when I was backpacking around and ended up staying with friends there and one thing led to another. I lived in Germany for about seven years. I had been a teacher at a high school in Brisbane teaching English as a second language so I got involved with a European Union teacher-training program in Dresden; they were retraining East German Russian teachers to become East German English teachers. I ended up doing my PhD over there, as well as getti...ng married and having kids over there. Though not in that order. After seven years we were looking for something different and I was after some Asian experience. We ended up moving to Oman in Middle East, which is on the Arabian Peninsula. I worked with a University of Queensland affiliated university there, got involved with some cross-institutional nationally funded research projects in language testing, translation and Omani women’s dress practices. We were there for about seven years. The kids were getting older, heading towards becoming teenagers, and while it’s a really fantastic place to be a young kid and a good place to have a family it’s a little more difficult as an adolescent. There are some great things about Gulf ex-pat life and there are some other things that could probably skew your view of the universe, so we wanted to go somewhere that that was a bit more...how should I put it? ...put the kids in touch with Australian, everyday life. And here we are in the northern rivers. Thomas Roche #heartofSCU Read more stories: http://plus20.scu.edu.au/heart-of-scu/

16.01.2022 I first got into marine biology by collecting seashells as a kid and marine snails are still my favourite animals. Ever since I volunteered to answer some questions about local sharks for a local radio station I seem to be on some media database as ‘shark expert’. I have dabbled in sharks and shark behaviour, so I guess I have an informed opinion, but I do flinch a little at that title. But if it helps me to influence public and political opinion on such things as shark cull...s, then I am happy to go with it. The field I have come to specialise in over the past few years is the age and growth of marine animals, particularly focusing on unusual methods for ageing and on unusual animals. I am also interested in the teaching-research nexus. My Fisheries Biology unit tells a great story of how teaching can inform research and vice versa. Some of the questions addressed by my research have come from classroom exercises and student questions. The research then provides examples and practical exercises that have real-world applications. In one case the new class exercise is now providing data for a long-term research project on fish movement and growth. Hopefully this direct involvement in research during undergrad studies inspires students to take their studies further. Next February will mark 30 years that I have been at SCU the longest serving staff member in my school. It’s incredible to think on how far this place, and myself, have changed in that time. 12.01.2022 Isaak was born with a kidney damage and I gave him mine ten years ago. It was stressful because when he was born he had to have an operation straight away; he had about three in 3 months and he didn’t look very healthy. When he was four his doctor said he needed a transplant but we were able to wait until he was eight years old because, when you’re a child it’s hard to take an adults kidney, and when you’re a little older it’s easier. So we managed. We decided we didn’t want... our 8 year old to go through dialysis and we were better off doing the transplant. I was a perfect match. In the back of your mind the thought is there.I remember thinking I better take a good look around the operating theatre because maybe this is the last time, you never know. I was pretty healthy and fit though. And this year he’s graduating year 12 and going to Uganda for schoolies and he’s applied to come to SCU. 12.01.2022 I moved to Lismore for university, doing a Bachelor of Media. We did a digital unit about web 2.0 and the creation of blogs and so I created The Chubby Fashionista in 2008 and I think I did one blog and it stayed like that for ages. When I was in Vienna, I saw a street style photography exhibition and I decided that I was going to start blogging It was basically going to be a styling portfolio but people weren’t reacting to the styling. They were reacting to the amateur mod...els, and the photos. I shot some pictures of the crowd at Bluesfest for Common Ground Byron Bay and Lizzy of Spell and the Gypsy Collective liked my pics. I was always a huge Spell fan, so much so that my mum offered to make me a similar top. So we went to Lincraft and she spent all day sewing and it looked like absolute crap and I yelled at her. But I got the original Spell top as payment for a festival - I always opt for clothes - and it’s in my cupboard and I plan on keeping it forever as it brings me great memories. I am now Spell's Marketing Communications Coordinator. So here I am in Lismore, working for a global brand, and now I have my dream jobhard work pays off! 05.01.2022 My connection with SCU has changed over the years. I started in 2003 as a tutorand now I have just finished my PhD, so that’s huge; a relief and very exciting. I did it full time so it was interesting for me to have been a teacher and then to become a student and see that perspective. I feel like I’ve rounded off my own personal academic journey. I’m not quite sure where it’s going to take me but I have a feeling it will good. Andrea Boyle #heartofSCU... Read more stories: http://plus20.scu.edu.au/heart-of-scu

02.01.2022 Years before I moved up here and before I had children I flatted with a girl who was the EA for the Vice Chancellor at Sydney Uni. When I left Sydney I said to her ‘When I move to the Northern Rivers and I come off maternity leave I want your job, at Southern Cross University’. She laughed and said, ‘Sure, good luck, Caroline’s been in that job forever’When I was ready to re-enter the workforce, I jumped on SEEK and the very first job that came up was Executive Assistant to... the Vice Chancellor, Southern Cross University! The very first one. I nearly fell off my chair, as you can imagine. I had been out of the workforce for over five years because I’d been a full time mum, so I thought I didn’t have a snowflakes chance, but I went for it anyway. When I came in for the interview, the very first thing I saw sent shivers down my spine. The night before, I had a dream that I was swimming with a white whale. It was a powerful dream and felt like an omen. The next day, the first thing I saw as I got out of the elevator for the interview was a huge photo of Migaloo, the albino whale, leaping out of the ocean! During that interview, the VC saw something in me and gave me a chance, despite my years out of the workforce. I’ve been working with Peter for over two years now. We have a great relationship and I genuinely love coming to work. Saffron Bond #heartofSCU Read more stories: http://plus20.scu.edu.au/heart-of-scu

01.01.2022 I love Southern Cross Universityso I’m here for another three years. I am doing my PhD, which focuses on the interface between two disciplines; ecological economics and environmental management. This is my first year. It’s a great experience and a chance to wander at your own pace through a discipline, it’s an exciting way to learn. I had done my honours before this and I really enjoyed the independent research style of learning and so I’ve carried on from that. Being at SC...U in Lismore you can see and interact with the environment around you, it is certainly motivating. I’m lucky because my work is actually contributing to this same environment and community we see. From my time here it seems like there is a new groundswell emerging from SCU Lismore Student Association - LEXSA and the facilities here. I love Lismore. I am excited by any place that has progress and I feel like we are entering a new age at Lismore. Finally it’s exciting and engaging again! I’m the sustainability rep on the LEXSA committee and working with them has grown a new passion to study here; I feel I’m contributing to the culture that exists here and I’m just so happy for this chance. 01.01.2022 I’m very close to my family and in 2008 my family and my sister’s family packed up house and moved to Sawtell, it was like a really long summer holidayWith my interest in nutrition and exercise I’ve done some fun things. I’ve done all the SCU marathons and in the last couple of years I’ve taken up road riding and last year we road for 3 days on a charity ride from Armidale to South West Rocks. I’ll definitely do that again next year. It’s such an inspiration to meet people ...who have been affected by cancer. I lost my sister last year to cancer so it’s close to our hearts. She has two beautiful girls, who are like my own girls. They are amazing, strong. And it’s incredible what you can cope with.
