The award recognises an Australian based producer and/or production company and/or screen organisation that has made a significant contribution through excellence or impact to diversity and inclusion either on or offscreen within the Australian screen industry. VIOLETA AYALA Violeta Ayala is a Quechua film director, producer, writer and artist with Bolivian and Australian nationality. She is best known for directing the award winning documentaries Cocaine Prison (2017), The Fight (2017), The Bolivian Case (2015) and Stolen (2009). Her films have premiered at a number of acclaimed festivals including the Toronto International Film Festival, screening in hundreds of festivals worldwide and distributed The Guardian, PBS, Amazon Prime and others. Violeta’s won 50 awards, including a Walkey Award and nominations for the prestigious IDA in Los Angeles and the Rory Peck Sony Impact Award in London. She is working on the feature version of The Fight, Prison X an immersive and interactive VR experience based on Neo-Andean myths. Violeta is an alumnus of Film Independent, Berlinale, Hot Docs, IFP New York, Good Pitch NY, IDFA and a Sundance and Tribeca Film Institute Fellow. She is a founding member of United Notions Film.

20.01.2022 The ABC TV + iview has launched a $5 million development fund to provide urgent and critical support to independent Australian producers and safeguard local content and creativity during these unprecedented times. Spanning five streams listed below, the ABC’s Fresh Start Fund recognises the essential role played by independent producers in helping the ABC deliver Australian stories for audiences, across all its platforms and services. The fund also supports emerging Australia...n talent and creatives for the Australian market, to ensure the viable future of the local production industry. 1. Enhanced Development & Production Fund Supports existing productions and new concepts by Australian production companies that have worked with the ABC or gained some industry recognition. 2. Innovation Fund Supports innovative content ideas by individual Australian creatives who may not have worked with the ABC previously. 3. Arts Digital Fund Supports Australian creatives and production companies with innovative ideas for new arts content, particularly documentary storytelling. 4. Children’s Content Fund Supports excellence in children’s content. 5. Australian Music Fund Supports independent Australian artists and musicians across all ABC music networks. Bus Stop Films has launched Inclusion in Action, a unique screen industry focused workshop aimed at producers, production companies, broadcasters and filmmakers with a focus on gaining a better understanding of the rights and capacity of people living with disability. The workshop explores pathways to employment, engaging people living with disability within organisations and productions and is underpinned by the principles of inclusive filmmakin...g, complementing Bus Stops` The Inclusive Filmmaking Toolkit. Inclusion in Action was inclusively developed by industry professionals with lived experience of disability and is being delivered FREE during a pilot program, with a suite of online sessions now open for enrolment. Inclusion in Action was funded by the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) through an Information Linkages and Capacity Building grant and developed by Bus Stop Films with the support of the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA). 13.01.2022 Media organisations around the country have now begun implementing the first stage of The Everyone Project, a significant new initiative to help Australian scre...en industry companies and organisations track, boost and foster diversity in their screen productions. Australia’s diversity is one of its great strengths, with rich multicultural, disability and LGBTQIA+ communities, so reflecting those communities and their stories on our screens is important. The Everyone Project will establish the diversity across Australia’s screen sector, both in front of and behind the cameras, and provide understanding of what a diverse workforce looks like to those driving productions in Australia. Managed by the SDIN and Screen Industry Innovation (Sii), The Everyone Project is an easy-to-use web app that invites people to self-identify on a set of characteristics around the diversity of the talent and crews working in their current projects. SDIN members are now inviting staff, contractors and crew members and cast to participate by completing the voluntary and confidential survey. 08.01.2022 The SDIN are delighted to announce the appointment of Jo Dillon and Benjamin Law as the new co-chairs for 2020-21. Jo and Ben take over the SDIN Chair position from Tim Soutphommasane and Tracey Vieira. Tim and Tracey said Jo and Ben will make a great team. They have both demonstrated their commitment to diversity and inclusion over many years in the screen industry. We know they will lead the SDIN with verve and imagination and take The Everyone Project into the next phase of delivery. We welcome Jo and Ben to the role in time to support the use of The Everyone Project across SDIN member-funded productions which will commence 1st July. The Everyone Project is a significant new initiative to help Australian screen industry companies and organisations track and boost diversity in their screen productions.

06.01.2022 Film Vic has reopened applications for the Victorian Screen Development Internship program, with the aim of forging career pathways for Indigenous and other underrepresented Victorian creative talent. Designed to give experience with the full scope of screen content development, 2021 participants will spend up to four months with Fremantle Australia or @PrincessPictures four months at the ABC Australia and four months at Film Vic. 02.01.2022 Maralinga Tjarutja has been announced as the 2020 recipient of the annual SDIN Award. The announcement was made by Benjamin Law on the 'Everyone Included' panel as part of the Screen Forever conference today. Maralinga Tjarutja was selected by an external panel from a very impressive shortlist which included First Day (Epic Films) and Thalu (Weerianna Street Media).
