25.01.2022 MEDIA RELEASE - MITIGATION BURN SAVES LANCELIN *Please attribute the information below to Shire President, Cr Sam Collard. The fire at Lancelin which has burnt ...through approximately 130 hectares was first reported on Tuesday, 15 October. As of 7pm on 16 October the blaze was fully contained and 90% controlled. Fire fighters have continued to patrol the fire since last evening in case of any flare ups. There are thankfully none to report. The Shire of Gingin and the Incident Controller, Tim McGrade, would like to extend their sincere thanks and appreciation to the following who were instrumental in combating Tuesday's dangerous blaze: - Bushfire Brigade Volunteers - Volunteer Fire & Rescue - DFES Career Fire & Rescue - DFES Career Management Staff - St John Ambulance - WA Police & Police Airwing - Business owners of Lancelin and Ledge Point for supplies of food, fuel, etc. to the firefighting effort - Shire staff Without their dedicated assistance this fire could have ended in significant disaster but as a result of their quick action, no homes or lives were lost. The Shire of Gingin would also like to acknowledge that on 20 June 2019 significant mitigation burning was undertaken in the Lancelin area, particularly along Casserley Way in addition to Kendall Rd, Collins St and Cockram Road. This caused some consternation at the time with complaints regarding the smoke but thanks to the completion of this burn, no homes were lost due to approximately a 75% reduction in the fuel load on Casserley Way. Whilst mitigation burning can inconvenience residents, its benefit was well and truly demonstrated at Tuesdays blaze. As reported via other media outlets, the blaze is suspicious with 6 ignition points which WA Police are now investigating. If anyone in the area saw any suspicious behaviour, please contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 and report it to WA Police.

14.01.2022 A reminder if driving on our beaches lower your tyre pressure much lower than you think you need to. The boys lowered these to 10 PSI after pulling the unfortunate driver of this new ute. Also if you are going to do any off-roading buy a compressor, take a shovel and recovery trax and have water with you as it's hard work digging out your vehicle. Remember to act early to get help if needed as once the tide comes in it's often unsalvageable.

In the interest of clarification, community members are invited to please read and take note of the answers we have provided (see the link at the top of this post) to the following comments: - "The plan to build a wall at Grace Darling Park has been scrapped permanently" - "The State Government has turned its back on Lancelin" - "The Shire should relocate Grace Darling Park north of its current location to the unused Cuncliffe St carpark" - "The Shire is incompetent" - "If we build the sea wall it will protect Lancelin permanently" - "It is so cheap to build a sandbag wall. Why doesn't the Shire just get on with it?" - "Sand renourishment is a waste of money and resources" - "The next big storm will wipe out Grace Darling Park" - "The Shire wants to tear down the town for some other purpose" - "The Shire has turned its back on Lancelin" - "Council doesn't want to spend the money" If you have a question we have further information (including a FAQ fact sheet) on our website or alternatively you can email your question to us via our web page.
