23.01.2022 Of what I know for sure, knowing when to quit is perhaps the most powerful. I still struggle with this. Even though I know that temper and stubbornness have no ...place in horsemanship, I am human. I get caught up some days in being right. I have a mare who can peel off my veneer of pleasantry in as much time as it takes to rip off a bandaid. Veterans of many a battle, she and I have finally come up with a truce. I ask and she responds. Usually, she gives of her best effort the first time or two that I ask her. Unless, of course, were chasing cows, in which case, she will happily excel all day. In the arena, Ive had to learn to say thank you and stop. In light of my get more and get better personality, this has not been easy. The mare has taught me that if the horse nobly gives of her best in the first five minutes of schooling, then why go on? Yet, we humans are tempted, all the time. I am slowly, slowly learning that when I am given the good effort, the honest try, to stop and go for a mosey down along the creek or around the cows. Or Ill head back to the barn, unsaddle and give a rub with her beloved jelly mitt.. or just turn her out for a good roll. Stabled horses benefit hugely from being untacked and just going out for a grazing walk, in hand. When we do this, were still training! Were teaching our horses that they can do good work without the endless warm up. More importantly, were teaching that generosity will be rewarded, that we can be good company and not just endlessly unhappy and demanding thugs. Allied to this notion of quitting while were ahead, is being of strong enough convictions that we will stick with our program when faced with spectators or a warm up ring of fiercely-driven competitors. This is a huge mental test, to ride as we have planned when others are out there beside us, fixing their horses. Whatever our discipline, the problem of leaving our best performance in the warm up ring is all too common. It wasnt until I disciplined myself to taking a stop watch and timing one of my combined driving ponies from hitching up to going his very best forward, elastic, happy and full of jam that I realized where I was going wrong. He needed only four to six minutes before he was at his peak. I realized then that the judges were seeing us WAAAAAY past our best before dates. This was one more lesson in quitting while were ahead. One example that is a shining beacon of when to quit involves a person whose horsemanship I admire greatly. He and maybe eight other pros were warming up their horses before the open bridle class at a working cowhorse show. Unlike so many others who were literally carving on their horses to sharpen them at the last minute, this guy long-trotted a lap or two. He loped a few circles and changed leads twice. He turned up the centre and shifted through first, second and third gears to a huge, breathtaking stop. Then, he petted the horse, stepped down, loosened the cinch and led him out the gate. The horse was ready and loaded; what else were they going to do? As they were leaving, a bystander teased, "Thats IT?!" He smiled and answered quietly, "Thats it." Later on, when it counted, they were unbeatable. Yep, its one thing knowing what to do. Its another thing, altogether, in knowing when to stop.

16.01.2022 Do we have a hoof care pandemic? In the last 3 weeks we have completed 19 HoofScan assessments, with the results showing 11 of these horses were NPA in the hind... feet & a number of them NPA in the front feet also. We are getting a lot of people still unsure about how to correctly evaluate alignment. And after such high numbers of poor alignment recently, its worth reviewing the subject again. External Evaluation HPA - with your horse standing square, with vertical cannon bones, a line should ideally run through the centre of the pastern, which should match the dorsal wall. Ideally, the dorsal wall & heel angle should match. If these do not match, you have broken alignment & hoof distortions. It is a good idea to ask your farrier/trimmer when they are about to trim/shoe your horse to help you evaluate your horses feet. It only takes a few minutes to do this visual assessment. The questions to ask Does my horse have correct alignment (HPA), if not, why not? Do my horses heel angles match their dorsal wall angles, if not, why not? Are the coronary bands on my horses feet straight, if not, why not? We are not saying to blame your hoof care provider, but if there is broken alignment & hoof capsule distortions, the question needs to be asked, why is that the case & what are we doing to correct it? Horses feet do not get to be NPA over night, its generally through weeks/months of inadequate hoof care &/or a lack of early detection & correction! Be involved in the health of your horse & its feet. Ask your farrier/ trimmer to help you better understand your horses feet through external, visual assessment. And once every year, get podiatry radiographs for your hoof care provider to work from, I guarantee your horse will thank you for it!
