24.01.2022 ISSUE 8 IS OUT- PLACE YOUR ONLINE BY FRIDAY NOVEMBER 20 https://www.scholastic.com.au/media/5754/bc820.pdf Dear Students and Families,... This year has been a challenging one in many ways. So to round out the year we have the last issue of Book Club for 2020 issue 8. Take the opportunity to see what you or others in your family might like for Summer Holiday reading. It is also a really good issue for finding great gift ideas for the season. The Book Club Team at Seabrook would like to thank all the students and families for supporting Book Club through this year as it is a great way for us to help with resources and books for the school. We wish you a safe end to the year and look forward to sending home lots of great, fun and entertaining reading material to carry you through the Summer holiday. Take care, Seabrook Book Club Team
21.01.2022 CAUTION INSTALLING NON-APPROVED APPs During this extraordinary time, we request that families be very cautious and vigilant about NOT allowing the installation of non-approved software onto school managed devices (includes 1to1 and BYOM MacBook’s). A number of unapproved/unverified apps are being circulated and installed onto school and personal devices, potentially putting family and child privacy at great risk. A couple of these well known apps are now having law suits ...filed against them for misleading and sharing private information from user devices. Although we worked hard to try and get student devices (Years 3-6) upgraded before the holidays, not all students received our major update in time. For those that did receive this, then the SEABROOK Self Service APP is where children must install approved apps from, no exception. For all other devices, we strongly advise caution against installing anything new, unless you read it as approved through the usual school information portals (including from your teachers). The Years 3-6 MacBook SEABROOK Self Service app also contains year level specific bookmarks. Now is a more important time than ever to help protect yourselves against malicious software and to seriously consider your families privacy first. Generally speaking, if it’s free, then there is a good chance there will be a trade off. We thank the families who have reached out first, obtaining advice before installing any new apps. A good reminder to us all, that Acceptable Use Policies of both the Education Department and our school still need to be adhered to for all 1to1 and BYOM devices. Policies related to online bullying, installing of apps, and ensuring only G-rated (age appropriate) content are all still enforced, even when at home. Please stay safe online during this difficult time.

20.01.2022 At the footbridge, opposite Ravenswood Ct, Seabrook, some students from grades 3,4 and 6 threw plastic bottles into Skeleton Creek! But the activity had a purpose: the five GPS-equipped bottles are being tracked to see where they finish up. Led by Dr Kavitha Chinathamby, RMIT Aquatic Scientist, the ‘Litter Trackers’ project aims to investigate the movement of litter items, which may be trapped in stream-side vegetation, collected by litter traps, or transported along the wate...rway eventually ending up in Port Phillip Bay. For the Litter Trackers project, 20 Melbourne waterways have been selected, with 15 launched so far including Werribee River and Kororoit Creek. The Victorian state government-funded project is a collaboration between RMIT and Melbourne Water. The GPS-equipped bottles will be retrieved later by the RMIT Litter Trackers project. Students were sparked with passion and enthusiasm and on the walk back home, students took action by filling a large Coles plastic bag they found with litter. Once students got back to school, some students stuck around to categories the rubbish into recyclable or general waste. Miss Easson is very proud of all the students who attended the excursion, it was heart-warming to see students so inspired by this litter project’ Thank you to everyone who was involved and to the students who attended - you were fantastic, engaged and attentive, also in the brief talk beforehand, on why litter is an important environmental issue. KEEP TRACK OF THE LITTER TRACKERS! The journey of the bottles released are tracked via the Litter Trackers website (tagged as 'Seabrook P.S_1 - P.S_5): https://www.rmit.edu.au//resea/aquest/rmit-litter-trackers
18.01.2022 CYBER SAFETY Dear parents and carers, Owing to recent media coverage this is a timely reminder for everyone to please ensure that you are vigilant when your children are using their computer or tablet device at home. ... You/your child signed a user agreement through the school about appropriate use of computers and it is important to remind parents/carers about keeping your child/ren safe while they are online, protecting them from unsuitable content and bullying on line behaviour. Children need to be monitored consistently and positioned in an open area of the home. It is important for their safety that they are not left unattended in their bedrooms, with their doors closed using a device. It is suggested by experts that a child’s computer or device is not left in their room overnight, and that it is perfectly reasonable for adults to keep the devices secure until the following morning. While our school uses filter technology to trigger unsavoury language and unsuitable websites, other home devices your child could have access to may not have these safeguards. Devices, however can be configured to restrict access to certain sites and allow parents to set limits on daily use to protect children. We want to remind parents that children can easily enter sites that are designed for an older audience and be enticed to give away personal information which is potentially harmful, or view material that is unsuitable. It is important to be aware that there are specified ages for different social media websites, usually thirteen years and above. Children under the age of thirteen should not be using the following sites, Facebook, Tik Tok, Instagram, .These sites may seem harmless on the surface but police warn that unsuitable videos can have embedded images of animals or other messages to lure in unsuspecting minors exposing them to adult themes or can be used by predators to befriend children on line. We want to help you keep your children safe and strongly recommend that parents/carers take the time to view the following sites to learn more about protecting your child/ren when on line: http://www.cybersmart.gov.au/ http://www.education.vic.gov.au//bullystoppers/smsocial.pdf Thank you for your continued support, Nicole Lockwood Assistant Principal - Seabrook Primary School
