25.01.2022 Caterpillar update: It's been a while since I posted an update, but not a lot has been happening. All the caterpillars have turned into their chrysalis and we have been watching them change from the beautiful green colour to dark and transparent where we could see the colour of the wings showing through... All the chrysalis are in different stages of their transformation and it is interesting to see the process. I will take some photos tomorrow to see if I can capture the differences. Tonight as I was getting my children to bed I peeked into the enclosure to see that one has emerged! It is a female I think as she doesn't have a black spot on her wing that I can see. In the next day or two the next one should emerge, I will try to capture that on time lapse. It would be so interesting to watch it happen!

25.01.2022 Interesting facts about the monarch caterpillar and butterfly: They only eat a plant called milkweed. It has a white sap inside the stem Milkweed is a plant that can be really irritating to skin and eyes so I have had to wash my hands and also wore gloves to protect my skin. The caterpillars eat this plant to make them toxic to other creatures. Their bright yellow stripes also are a warning to creatures to not eat them. Did you know that insects often are bright colours to wa...rn predators to stay away? Many of these brightly coloured insects eat plants that have toxins in them that don't hurt the insect but can make an animal or person sick. That's a reason why we have to be careful in the garden to not touch plants that we don't know about and to wash our hands! Monarch butterflies have the toxin in their body after hatching so it keeps them safe from predators then too. Caterpillars go through stages of growth called instars. Monarch butterflies go through 5 instar stages where their skin is shed and eaten! At the 5th instar stage they eat A LOT! They grow to around 5cm long and 1cm thick. When they are ready to moult they go quite still. They then shed their skin and climb to the top of the enclosure or a branch in a tree. They attach themselves with a silk pad to the tip and hang in a J shape. When they are ready they shed their skin for a final time and the chrysalis emerges. This can take a while, some people say around 12 hours but these are over 24 hours. Perhaps our house is a bit cold which can make it take a lot longer. It can take between 8 days and 3 weeks for the butterfly to emerge. The chrysalis goes from light green to emerald green and then darkens. Have you seen a caterpillar or other insect in your garden that is brightly coloured? What about insects that aren't brightly coloured? Why do you think they aren't bright? What other creatures might live in your garden? Why didn't you go outside and explore the garden with your grown-ups? Remember to look with your eyes and not your hands when you find insects, you don't want to hurt them - but some can hurt you too so it is best to just watch them in their habitat. and always wash your hands after being in the garden too! Can you draw a picture of your garden or what you see In your garden? We would love to see them!

23.01.2022 Excuse the commentary of my children and excuse the mountain of washing I am yet to fold (5 children create a lot of washing)... We just thought it was far too exciting not to share the emergence of butterfly #2. We almost missed it too!! You can see in the video how the wings are really scrunched up, but it is not long before the wings have had all the butterfly blood pumped through them and they begin to take shape

13.01.2022 Dear Families, As you will are probably aware, the Victorian Government made decisions this week that impact our community. The new restrictions are a return to stricter lockdown, with only four reasons to leave your house: - Shopping for essential food and supplies... - Care and caregiving - Exercise - Study or work - if it can't be done from home. There was also an announcement that schools (Prep - Year 10) will have their school holidays extended by a week. The Department of Education has instructed us that this does not include kindergartens or other Early Childhood Education and Care Services. Therefore, we will be open from Monday the 13th of July as normal. More information will be sent out later in the week regarding any changes to procedures and other measures relating to keeping our community safe and healthy. We thank you for your ongoing support and understanding during this time, The Seaford Kindergarten Team

11.01.2022 Dear Families, Before the school holidays began we had discussions with the children at kindergarten about Coronavirus, hygiene and how to stay healthy. To continue the conversation at home we thought you might like to watch a special episode of ABC Kids Playschool with your children. The episode will premiere this Thursday at 4pm, on the ABC Kids Community Facebook page, and it will discuss the need to stay home and have healthy hygiene practices. We hope you are all staying... safe and enjoying time together in these difficult times. Seaford Kindergarten Staff https://www.facebook.com/173407216019501/posts/3402446559782201/

11.01.2022 Online auction donation request To all Local Seaford Businesses and Families, Seaford Kindergarten located in McRae Street Seaford has a small parent run committee and our biggest fundraising event of the year is always our Trivia Night usually held in June at the local Community Hall. But this year unfortunately due to the current pandemic, we are unable to run it.... To continue to raise much needed funds we are holding an online auction which will run during the first 2 weeks of November to assist with the purchasing of resources and help with the upgrade of our outdoor space. This year we aim to develop a sustainable garden to help bring butterflies and insects into the play area and creating accessibility pathways connecting our activity zones. We fully appreciate how businesses have been affected by what this year has thrown at us. But as the kinder relies heavily on fundraising to operate, we are seeking donations of items or services from local businesses to be included in our online auction. Businesses will be recognised through our online communication platform Storypark, on our Facebook page and receive a certificate of appreciation. If you are able to help us in any way, it would be greatly appreciated. 09.01.2022 Here is a photo of the next chrysalis that will open. You can see the colours and patterns of the butterfly wing. The one next to it if you look closely you will see the colour of the chrysalis is beginning to change. Can you see the formation of the wing through the chrysalis?

08.01.2022 Something exciting and so super interesting happened today. One of the caterpillars became a chrysalis! We took a video but it was blurry. So tonight we have set up a camera to capture the second caterpillars transformation. It has been in this position for over 24 hours and has been wriggling and moving around so I think it might happen sometime soon. The caterpillars wriggle and move to loosen their outer skin before they shed and the chrysalis begins to form. It is a wei...rd green blob at first, and then it begins to take on a beautiful shape with hints of gold! The chrysalis is soft for a day or two then it hardens up. It is fascinating to watch this happen and I look forward to showing you all tomorrow! Have you ever seen a chrysalis in your garden? Have you ever seen the transformation occur?

07.01.2022 The fantails are shimmying it up at the Seaford Kinder Fun Day, here til 2pm

05.01.2022 Late last night we were able to capture the second caterpillar transform into a chrysalis! The shedding of the skin happens quite quickly - about 4 or 5 minutes from the time the skin begins to shed to when the skin falls off. then for around 30 minutes there is a lot of squirming as the shape of the chrysalis changes from a strange looking blob to the beautiful shape it becomes. We filmed this in time lapse so it is a lot quicker to watch! Beck :)... a time lapse video of caterpillar #2 transforming into a chrysalis. this process took around 30-40 minutes however we sped it up to be only a few minutes!

05.01.2022 It's very exciting to see the butterflies as they are learning how to use their wings. Today we gave some cordial on a sponge to the first butterfly, but the second one is not ready to eat/drink Seeing how it uses its proboscis to drink is so interesting!

05.01.2022 Thank you to everyone who purchased a snag at Bunnings Warehouse Australia Carrum Downs and to all of our wonderful volunteers who made today happen! Thank you! We made a profit of $1173.10! This money will be so valuable for our little kinder

04.01.2022 Creek & Bay will be attending the 60th Birthday Family Fun Day celebrations on the 15th of September. Creek and Bay have a collection of womens and childrens accessories and clothing.

04.01.2022 This is a call out to any parents who can assist with one hour on the Family Fun Day on Sunday 15th September! We require help with supervising the jumping castle, BBQ, mystery jars and the beauty bar to ensure this event is successful! 03.01.2022 Dear families, What an interesting end to term 1! These past few days, staff have been working on finalising our plans and programs in preparation for next term and the prospect of remote learning programs. We would like to assure all our kindergarten families that we will be keeping you all updated over the coming weeks of how we will be giving continuity to the children in these uncertain times. We hope the kinder children enjoy the educational packs we sent home as well <3... In these there are many activities for you to share with your child over the coming weeks. As we move into the school holidays and the different type of break - We would like to share a story with you all, "Brave as can be" by Jo Witek. It discusses feeling afraid from a child's perspective and how to work through and overcome these feelings. We think it is quite fitting for us all in these times. It is also really important to remember feeling afraid sometimes is something we all feel. Sometimes we don't feel brave - but talking about it or even just having a cuddle with a trusted grown up can help you feel secure, safe and helps us to become brave too <3 Please take care and we look forward to connecting again soon. From all the staff at Seaford Kindergarten xx

01.01.2022 You may have seen Spoonvilles being created around our community, and the world.
