23.01.2022 We have some exciting news! Our resident octopus, Marcia, laid quite a few (thousand) eggs recently, and they have just started hatching. They are roughly 5mm long, and over the course of their life can grow to 1.2 metres and have an arm span of nearly 3 metres. Octopuses generally live for 1-1.5 years, so these little ones will have to grow 240 times their current size in a year!... Hundreds of their siblings have already hatched and are on display, so come and see them on one of our regular guided tours, 10 am to 3pm.

22.01.2022 This is a great interview with our wonderful Rachelle Hawkins. https://handfish.org.au/raising-red-handfish-with-rachelle/

We are just establishing the cafe on review sites and we are making the audacious request to you all that if you have had a great experience there please make an entry on Google reviews. please do this after searching for The Cormorant Cafe on the Pier, rather than for Seahorse World

Kids Discovery Program runs at 9:45 am, Monday to Friday, up until the 11th of October (excluding the public holiday on Thursday 10th) #TamarValley #SeahorseWorld

15.01.2022 At Seahorse World, we are currently still open and applying the governments social distancing rules. We have dramatically reduced tour sizes to just 6 people but they are running more frequently, starting at 10am.

15.01.2022 The things you can see at Beauty Point! It was so great to welcome the HMAS Collins to Inspection Head Wharf last weekend. Even more of an honour was to have crew and family visit us here at Seahorse World. These are the brave sailors tasked with protecting our blessed country. Thank you for your visit and we wish you safe journeys!

14.01.2022 This fantastic shirt was designed for Beauty Point darts player Brian Hearn who we have sponsored this year in both intra-and interstate competitions. Go Brian! ...and make sure everyone hears about Beauty Point

13.01.2022 Aunty Rachelle, who has been the primary carer for the little reds, drove the 8 teenagers south very carefully and very slowly.

11.01.2022 Thinking we might call this little Red Handfish Samson. This photo was taken today by Seahorse World employee Tegan and shows how they use their fins to hold themselves in place (or is he really trying to push the side out of the tank?).

11.01.2022 20% OFF all Anvers Choolates this week at Anvers Chocolate Shop Seahorse World. Enjoy a coffee in our lovely Cafe setting and a chocolate truffle $6 or a plate of 4 for just $5. We need to move our chocolate stock and Tasmania - we think youre up to it!... (Ends Sunday)

10.01.2022 If you would like to support true blue Tasmanian business this Easter, buy your Easter eggs at Anvers Confectionery Latrobe. They have produced a heap of magnificent Easter Eggs and your support will help them during this quiet time. Tasmania without businesses like Anvers is unthinkable so help them and buy quality local produce. Their shop is still open! We have a small number available at Seahorse World but entry is by appointment only .

10.01.2022 Two of northern Tasmanias best known tourist attractions have joined forces today with the opening of Anvers Chocolate Shop - Seahorse World. Mayor Christina Holmdahl graciously opened the shop in front of local tourism operators and industry representatives, by cutting the ribbon on a 700mm high chocolate seahorse sculpture crafted by master Chocolatier Igor van Gerwen, owner of Anvers Confectionery. The sculpture forms a centrepiece attraction at the new shop. We are so proud to be associated with Anvers in this way. #tamarvalley #houseofanvers #discovertasmania #brandtasmania #tourismaustralia

07.01.2022 We are so thankful that Australia has done so well in restricting the impacts of Covid 19 such that we are able to open this weekend. We are opening from 10 to 3pm this Saturday, Sunday and Monday (public holiday). After that open Wed to Sundays 10 till 3 until the State advises of next lifting of restrictions. It will be lovely to see people again at Seahorse World. #tamarvalley, #discovertasmania

07.01.2022 Well it has been a while since we last posted but we have been busily looking after all of our animals waiting for visitors to return. We are very thankful for the country we live in and how we, and our staff, have been supported by the Tasmanian and Federal governments. I am however going to take a bit of a risk and step out to say that it is time the Government opened our borders to fellow Australians and more speedily relaxed trading rules. We are one country after all and... now there is hardly anyone in it with this disease that everyone is so panicked about. Can you imagine being the only state that NSW residents can travel to? What a great opportunity for the Tasmanian Tourism industry. Lets have a little bit of bravery, with all reasonable precautions, and rescue our desperate airports, airlines, hotels, restaurants and tourism industry - including the wide range of support industries that have been impacted. Open the border now to fellow Australians! See more

06.01.2022 This is Beauty Point. Our town and the place where virtually all of our staff choose to live as well as work. I think you can see why. I moved here with my wife nearly 20 years ago and we love it. - Manager Craig #tamarvalley; #discovertasmania

05.01.2022 Farmed in the Tamar Valley, Tasmania - exported to the world! This week a large shipment of Tasmanian seahorses left Seahorse World for Taipei, Taiwan. We sit the polystyrene boxes in cardboard and wrap with extra insulation to ensure their temperature is maintained, helping them to arrive safely. Exports have been very strong in recent months especially to various parts of Asia... #Tamarvalley #DiscoverTasmania

03.01.2022 Handfishes! Latin, bracchium = arm + Greek, ichthys = fish

02.01.2022 We want you to be sure that we are open 7 days per week in August and September with tours starting on the hour from 10am to 3pm. Looking forward to welcoming you along to learn about our unique Tasmanian business. Another export to Tokyo Japan left yesterday so we are still getting some animals out and about too!

01.01.2022 This is one of our juvenile Spotted Handfish (Brachionichthys hirsutus) We call her Sue. Sues species is struggling to catch a break.... With the threat from invasive species like the Northern Pacific sea star and the long spined sea urchin, combined with historical poor fishing practices and the traditional heavy chained boat moorings in their preferred habitat effectively scouring the seafloor. She is struggling to catch a break, but she doesnt struggle as much to catch her food. Handfish are in fact a small species of Angler fish. Think of the glowing, deep-sea creature from Finding Nemo (our favourite movie) The Illicium (lure) of the Handfish doesnt glow, but it is incredibly effective at attracting prey such as shrimp and small fish Here we see Sue swishing the Illicium back and forth in hopes of finding a tasty brine shrimp. For your own chance to see Sue and her siblings fishing, visit us at Seahorse World. You may even be lucky enough to see them when they strike. (something the videographer, Jesse, has been trying but failing to capture for months) For those keeping score at home, the name Brachionichthys comes from the Latin Bracchium meaning arm and the Greek ichthys meaning fish, and hirsutus, the Latin word for hairy. #tamarvalley #SeahorseWorld #spottedhandfish #endangeredspecies #tscommissioner #NESP #CSIRO #IMAS ( Jesse Chippindall)
