23.01.2022 A 130-metre long shark net has been missing from Harbour Beach in Mackay since at least Tuesday. At this stage, nobody knows what has happened to the net, but ...there are only a few things big and strong enough to dislodge such a large apparatus, and we fear that a whale may be caught. Whale entanglements in Queensland’s fishing gear are a direct consequence of leaving nets in the humpbacks' migration path. In 2018, volunteers from our Apex Harmony Campaign - Sea Shepherd Global found a shark net completely torn in half, most likely by a whale, in the same spot. As whales complete their annual mass migration back to the waters of Antarctica, we urgently need these deadly nets removed. Take action now >> https://bit.ly/32UTsJx #NetsOutNow

21.01.2022 Sharks are not as deadly as they are made out to be! Not only are they incredible apex predators who have been on this planet for over 400 million years, but th...ey play a vital role in our survival too. Sharks help regulate the oceans - without them, entire ecosystems will collapse. If we remove sharks, we risk the health of our oceans and as Captain Paul Watson says; 'if the oceans die, we die'. Swipe to find out what things are deadlier than sharks! 16.01.2022 Balloons are often seen as fun, harmless decorations and frequently released into the air to celebrate special events! Many are labelled as biodegradable and na...tural latex rubber giving the impression that they will simply break down in the environment. The first independent research has been conducted by the University of Tasmania to find out what does happen to balloons when composted! We now have the science and it is time for a national ban on balloon releases to be put into place around Australia! Balloon releases are just littering! 15.01.2022 What a great event this was! Our amazing MD coordinator, Joelie, from Albany, Western Australia, took a road trip to Hopetoun. For her August clean-up, she was ...delighted to join forces with the Hopetoun Community Centre, and together, they held multiple clean-ups. Thousands of pieces of trash were collected, but the theme for the day was fishing gear as well as the usual microplastics. 10 metres of rope, 110 metres of fishing line, 86 metres of rope and nets and close to 400 small pieces of net and rope. There were too many microplastics to count, but our best guestimate was over 1000. Joelie commented on how some of the plastic they found had been nibbled on and were similar to the plastics she had found previously on Cocos Keeling Island. We consider ourselves very fortunate to have so many inspiring and caring coordinators on our team, and Joelie is an excellent example of this. Not only does she protect our beaches, but she also helps care for orphaned joeys. To all the incredible people who gave up their time to help out, we would like to say a massive thank you. Oh, and let's not forget to thank the cute little joeys for their help too. We would love to give a huge shout to the team at Hopetoun Community Resource Centre who were not only great to work with who put on a fantastic week-long display for science week. Check-out the photos to see some of their art exhibition, all made from marine debris. #StemtheTide #EveryPieceCounts #SeaShepherdAlbany

10.01.2022 Here's a powerful message from Sea Shepherd Advisor and Mirning Elder Bunna Lawrie about the importance of protecting the Bight this #ThreatenedSpeciesDay: "Our... people have kept the balance and the harmony in the Great Australian Bight for over 65,000 years and more. This is why there is still so much diversity and amazing life in our sea country - a refuge and home for many of the World’s threatened species. Once there was whaling and our Mirning people fought against it to protect our totem family. Now the Southern right whales, the humpbacks and even the blue whales have returned in growing numbers. Sadly, it is a different story for the Northern right whales in their country. It is important for us to continue this traditional knowledge and wisdom. We wish to teach other people how to protect our Great Australian Bight and all that lives in it. Together we can continue to keep this beautiful balance in our pristine ocean. We are currently fighting to have our transitional custodianship acknowledged, so that this is not also threatened. Please be a Caretaker for the Bight and join us: https://bit.ly/32TlRjf" #FightForTheBight

09.01.2022 South Australia has become the first state in the country to ban single-use plastics! The Single-use and Other Plastic Products (Waste Avoidance) Bill 2020 ...passed through the South Australian Parliament yesterday, and bans the manufacture, production, distribution, sale and supply of certain single-use and other plastic products starting with straws, cutlery and beverage stirrers. The legislation, which will come into effect in early 2021 (delayed due to COVID-19 restrictions), also establishes a framework to phase-out additional products in the future. Thank you to all our supporters who answered our call to write submissions to the SA Government on single-use plastics - you've helped shape this history making legislation which will make a difference to marine life and our oceans. #stemthetide #everypiececounts #seashepherd

03.01.2022 WHALE UNLIKELY TO SURVIVE ENTANGLEMENT - ALBANY Authorities say a whale spotted off Albany with injuries from a previous entanglement is unlikely to survive.... The whale was last seen near Breaksea Island late last week, unable to use its tail. Fauna Operations Officer at DBCA Tim Button says the prognosis, from a long term entagnelment, is not good. "It’s definitely had a previous entanglement it didn’t have any trailing rope or obvious signs of entanglement still on there," he said. "What it does have is heavy Cyamidae loading which is the whale lice, and some necrosis on the peduncle which the area just in front of the tail fluke, where the tail fluke joins the body. "It’s still swimming but it’s not using it’s tail anymore, it’s mostly using is pectoral fins to move along, it appears that the tail is no longer being able to be used, and most likely the prognosis is not great unfortunately." They've asked water users to keep clear, if they spot the whale. Picture: File - DBCA
03.01.2022 The science is in - researchers from the Universities of Queensland and Exeter have found traces of plastic in every sample of seafood tested. Five different sp...ecies of raw seafood were purchased from a local fish market: farmed oysters, farmed tiger prawns, wild blue crabs, wild squid and wild sardines. The species with the highest plastic content was the sardines. Plastic is throughout our oceans, littering our coastlines, you'll find it in the soil, in our water and the air we breathe. We must put our planet first, otherwise the planet will soon be known as 'planet plastic'. #everypiececounts #seashepherd #stemthetide
