25.01.2022 The GREAT NEWS is that there's a new whale species in the Gulf of Mexico! The BAD NEWS? It's already on the brink of EXTINCTION. Learn more about Sea Shepherd's efforts to save our ocean at http://ow.ly/uy9750DkbUw ... Read more

25.01.2022 Sea Shepherd Foils Turtle Poachers in Mayotte Sea Shepherd France volunteers have once again scared away two poachers armed with knives who had come to kill sea turtles on the beach in Mayotte. Our teams have been patrolling every night from dusk to dawn on the beaches of this French island in the Indian Ocean since the beginning of October to stop poaching, the leading cause of death of sea turtles in Mayotte. #operationnyamba #fortheocean

25.01.2022 "A totally illegal industry that nonetheless brings in billions of dollars every year, IUU (illegal, unauthorised or unreported) fishing is the blight of the oceans. At a time when fish populations are in freefall Pacific bluefin tuna populations have dropped by 97 percent relative to their historical level and the international community is trying to preserve the wealth of the oceans, illegal practices at sea continue to thrive." Can we all unite to save the oceans? #SaveTheOceans #IUU

23.01.2022 The Sam Simon chased down another four trawlers threatening protected waters! Earlier this month, Gambian law enforcement aboard the Sam Simon arrested 4 trawlers defying local fishing laws. These actions protect where the nutrient-rich Gambia River meets the Canary Current, where it is beautifully rich in biodiversity.

23.01.2022 A 130-metre long shark net has been missing from Harbour Beach in Mackay since at least Tuesday. At this stage, nobody knows what has happened to the net, but there are only a few things big and strong enough to dislodge such a large apparatus, and we fear that a whale may be caught. Whale entanglements in Queenslands fishing gear are a direct consequence of leaving nets in the humpbacks migration path. In 2018, volunteers from our Apex Harmony Campaign - Sea Shepherd Glo...bal found a shark net completely torn in half, most likely by a whale, in the same spot. As whales complete their annual mass migration back to the waters of Antarctica, we urgently need these deadly nets removed. Take action now >> https://bit.ly/32UTsJx #NetsOutNow

23.01.2022 The science is in - researchers from the Universities of Queensland and Exeter have found traces of plastic in every sample of sea animals tested. Five different species of sea animals were purchased from a local fish market: farmed oysters, farmed tiger prawns, wild blue crabs, wild squid and wild sardines. The species with the highest plastic content was the sardines.... Plastic is throughout our oceans, littering our coastlines, youll find it in the soil, in our water and the air we breathe. We must put our planet first, otherwise the planet will soon be known as planet plastic. #everypiececounts #seashepherd #stemthetide Learn more about Sea Shepherds campaign to fight Marine Debris https://bit.ly/3m7DaG6

22.01.2022 South Australia has become the first state in the country to ban single-use plastics! The Single-use and Other Plastic Products (Waste Avoidance) Bill 2020 passed through the South Australian Parliament yesterday, and bans the manufacture, production, distribution, sale and supply of certain single-use and other plastic products starting with straws, cutlery and beverage stirrers. The legislation, which will come into effect in early 2021 (delayed due to COVID-19 restrict...ions), also establishes a framework to phase-out additional products in the future. Thank you to all our supporters who answered our call to write submissions to the SA Government on single-use plastics as part of our Sea Shepherd Australia - Marine Debris Campaign- youve helped shape this history making legislation which will make a difference to marine life and our oceans. #stemthetide #everypiececounts #seashepherd

15.01.2022 Surfers have a unique understanding of sharks. World Champion surfer Mick Fanning recently spoke to The Courier Mail about the need to replace Queenslands "shark control" program with modern shark bite mitigation technology including aerial drones to increase safety for ocean goers and reduce bycatch of harmless marine life. "The shark nets, they go for 200 metres so its pretty easy for (sharks) to swim around or swim under them. Its just a little bit outdated. We havent revisited them for a long time...The beach is a huge part of our tourism and a huge part of our economy so I think its time we revisit that and see if there is a smarter, safer way of doing things." 15.01.2022 An operation to rescue a humpback whale from Alligator River in Kakadu National park is still underway. 11.01.2022 GOOD NEWS A Queensland Government shark fin export fishery licence has been revoked because of their failure to protect threatened species on the Great Barrier Reef. This failure to meet the conditions of the export licence demonstrates the Queensland Governments incompetence when it comes to protecting vulnerable marine life. ... Turtles, dolphins and dugongs are all at risk of being killed in nets in the fishery. Sadly, the fishery is also responsible exporting shark fins, fish bladders and roe. 07.01.2022 Always Was. Always Will Be. Grace Wunungmurra is a Senior Ranger for Dhimurru. As part of NAIDOC Week 2020, we asked Grace what she wants the world to look like in the future. "I want the world to be a plastic-free environment so that marine wildlife can still be here for the next generation. It will be a better environment to live in and to eat off the land and sea."... Grace's advice for how you can help make this happen is: "Reducing [the] number of plastics that people buy or use, throwing all rubbish in the dump or the bin so it can't go out to sea.
