14.01.2022 Our remote clean up crew joined with the team at Blue Peter sailing training to tackle marine debris off the coast of Queensland last weekend. We were able t...o access the shorelines of Coochiemudlo, Teerk Roo Ra (Peel Island), and Goat Island aboard five sailing boats, and witnessed first-hand the ongoing impact of fishing gear on wildlife. Our combined team of 22, including skippers and crew from Blue Peter, collected over 390kg of rubbish, and discovered the bodies of both a green turtle and seabird killed by crab pots. These tragic findings within a conservation zone were a stark reminder of the importance of surveying hard-to-reach places. We will continue to scour the shores of Australia for a better, cleaner, and safer marine environment. 04.01.2022 Western Australia is the latest state to announce their plan to address single-use plastics! The WA State Government’s ‘Plan for Plastics’ includes the phase-out of single-use plastic items such as cutlery, plates, stirrers, straws, thick plastic bags, polystyrene food containers and helium balloon releases over the next three years. After these initial actions, plastic barrier/produce bags, cotton buds with plastic shafts, polystyrene packaging, microbeads, and oxo-degradabl...e plastics (plastics designed to break up into fragments at a faster rate) will be phased out. The plan also includes actions on prepacked fruit and vegetables, takeaway food containers and plastic packaging - swift action on plastic packaging needs to be a priority for all governments! "The time to act is now; plastic pollution is one of the greatest threats to wildlife around the world and, in 2018-19, only 11 per cent of Australia's plastic waste was recycled with 89 per cent sent to landfill, said WA Environment Minister Stephen Dawson. Sea Shepherd would like to acknowledge the hundreds of supporters who put forward submissions and took the on-line survey during the community consultation on the single-use plastics issues paper in 2019, which has shaped the content of the Plastics Plan. 98% of respondents were strongly in favour of actions to reduce the impacts of single-use plastics, including 98.63% of people (like us!) concerned that plastic litter is harming our wildlife with 98.61% stating that plastics end up polluting our waterways and oceans. Since 2015, Sea Shepherd beach clean-ups in WA have shown the west coast has a problem with plastic - we've removed over ONE MILLION pieces of trash in WA alone, with 75-80% being plastic. The initiatives in the WA Plastics Plan is one part of the journey all West Aussies need to do to help address the increasing use of plastic, waste and pollution on the beaches. Every state in Australia should have legislation to ban problem plastics

02.01.2022 Westernport Bay in Victoria is home to an array of marine animals including Australian fur seals, Southeastern Southern right whales, humpback whales and weedy sea dragons. Yet, AGL Energy want to turn Westernport Bay into a massive gas import terminal that would threaten these precious animals and increase climate pollution from dirty fossil fuels. Victoria can and must do better than giving the green light to potentially destructive projects like this. Sea Shepherd Austr...alia stands with Phillip Island Conservation Society and Preserve Western Port Action Group in calling for the protection of this wetland sanctuary.
