19.01.2022 Are we on the verge of a second shark cull in Western Australia? Read commentary from Sea Shepherd Australia's Managing Director Jeff Hansen about the WA Government's current proposal for a scientific trial to allow existing commercial line fishers, operating in the Pilbara and Gascoyne regions, to retain sharks taken as a by-product. One of the aims of the proposal is to reduce the numbers of sharks interacting with fishers and biting off ‘their’ catch (otherwise known as ...‘depredation’) http://ow.ly/Z8dR50DLqiw "To date, there is no scientific evidence to suggest that reducing shark numbers will lesson shark depredation. So why is the WA Labor Government doing this?... Looking up the definition of a cull: 'reduce the population of (a wild animal) by selective slaughter', it’s hard not to come to the conclusion that this is a proposed shark cull by the WA Government." #OpApexHarmony

11.01.2022 A new study by Dr Andrew Colefax shows SMART drumlines do not prevent sharks moving near to surf breaks. It also found that acoustic receivers often detect sharks that do not move closer to shore. We need modern shark bite mitigation solutions that protect swimmers, surfers, divers and marine life too. 10.01.2022 Australia is home to around 180 species of sharks including protected and endangered species. 02.01.2022 A positive move by Queensland with new shark fin fishing reforms affecting a broad area of QLD waters including the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. We welcome the new rule which requires sharks in the East Coast Inshore Fin Fish Fishery (ECIFFF) to be brought back to land in one piece, with their fins attached to their bodies. Prior to this change, sharks fins could be removed at sea and their bodies dumped. Without authorities being able to monitor things properly at sea, sh...arks can be killed alive and left to die slowly on the ocean floor. The amount of endangered species being fished will also be reduced by this change, as once a fin is removed from a shark it is very difficult to identify the species. At the moment, QLD, WA and the NT still allow shark finning in some areas. We must put an end to this barbaric practice everywhere.
