25.01.2022 The practical problems with gloves and masks finding their way into our rivers and oceans is that they can easily be mistaken for jellyfish, a favorite food of sea turtles. Because of their elastic components, masks also have increased risks of entanglement for a wide variety of fish, animals and birds.

21.01.2022 Sea Shepherd crew captured footage of five dolphins killed in the nets of an "artisanal fishing boat" off the French coast of Brittany in less than 24 hours. The European Union has demanded France ban fishing methods responsible for the needless slaughter of thousands of dolphins every year. Sea Shepherd will continue to patrol the coastline and expose these deaths until it stops. #OperationDolphinByCatch

20.01.2022 TOTOABA TRAFFICKING ARRESTS MADE IN MEXICO Mexican authorities arrested several individuals this week under charges of Organized Crime - Crimes Against the Environment. These charges relate to the trafficking of totoaba swim bladders and carry a sentence of possible jail time. This is the first time that charges of this nature have been applied in Mexico.... Totoaba poaching is the primary cause of the decline of the vaquita - the world’s most endangered marine mammal, which is endemic to a small region in Mexico’s Upper Gulf of California. Vaquitas, which are approximately the same size as totoabas, become entangled in the deadly illegal nets and drown. There are less than 20 vaquitas left alive. Sea Shepherd applauds the Attorney General’s Office and Mexican authorities for their swift action and continued commitment to protecting the vaquita through the prosecution of crimes relating to totoaba trafficking. 20.01.2022 - There is so much to learn on a ship, especially a Sea Shepherd ship! We asked one of our very own Melbourne chapter volunteers about their experience in several different roles with Sea Shepherd, heres what they had to say! Kate joined Sea Shepherd in 2015 because she was passionate about preserving our planet and felt she could no longer be a bystander, anxious about threats to marine habitats. Kate is both an onshore and at sea volunteer... and has crewed on 6 campaigns as a Deckhand. Kate is also a passionate diver and runs the Sea Shepherd Dive campaign throughout Australia and New Zealand. I love crewing with Sea Shepherd for many different reasons. Obviously, one huge motivator for all of us is taking direct action for our oceans by physically dedicating our time and energy to defend what we love. I get to work alongside a vast range of people, all with unique and inspiring reasons to be there, all united with the same conservation goals and all with something new I can learn from them. Every time I leave a campaign, it feels like Im walking away with so much more than I had to sacrifice to be there. Its the most exhausting/rejuvenating experience youll ever go through! Working as a Deckhand, I have been lucky enough to learn many new skills such as line handling, crane operating or welding. I was taught how to drive our small boats in Antarctica something I never dreamed of doing and an experience that has led me to now volunteering with the Australian Coast Guard when not out on campaign. But alongside these opportunities are the challenges. Deckhands are always on the front line when we are confronted with dead or dying animals, whether its hauling illegal nets out of the water or boarding illegal vessels. Coming face to face with the full impact of human greed on our fragile oceans is always the most devastating part of the job. When I joined up I had only minimal relevant experience having worked as a Divemaster on boats in Melbourne. Many other deckhands had no sea experience at all, its really more about your attitude and resilience. Veteran crew members will take the time to train newer crew members and our Bosuns (head of the deck crew) ensure their team are competent and safe to sail. As long as you are happy to work long hours, learn new skills and dont get too seasick, youll be fine!

20.01.2022 BREAKING The Sam Simon chased down another four trawlers threatening protected waters! Full story here https://bit.ly/32PZ0pw. Earlier this month, Gambian law enforcement aboard the Sam Simon arrested 4 trawlers defying local fishing laws. These actions protect where the nutrient-rich Gambia River meets the Canary Current, where it is beautifully rich in biodiversity.

18.01.2022 The science is in - researchers from the Universities of Queensland and Exeter have found traces of plastic in every sample of seafood tested. Five different species of raw seafood were purchased from a local fish market: farmed oysters, farmed tiger prawns, wild blue crabs, wild squid and wild sardines. The species with the highest plastic content was the sardines. ... Plastic is throughout our oceans, littering our coastlines, youll find it in the soil, in our water and the air we breathe. We must put our planet first, otherwise the planet will soon be known as planet plastic. #everypiececounts #seashepherd #stemthetide

17.01.2022 Were excited to bring you another online film screening on Adventure+ For all those experiencing the One Ocean Film Tour nostalgia, this ones for you! Mike DeGruy filmed the oceans for more than three decades becoming as famous for his on camera storytelling as for his glorious, intimate visions of the sea and the creatures who live in it. Inspired to share his legacy as a filmmaker and storyteller, and to spread his mission for protecting the ocean, his wife and film-makin...g partner Mimi deGruy returned to the edit room to produce Diving Deep: The Life and Times of Mike deGruy. Diving Deep: The Life and Times of Mike deGruy, tells that story and while it celebrates Mike and all he accomplished in his amazing career, it also highlights what he cared most about at the time of his death: we are destroying the ocean before we even know whats there. If Mike deGruy were alive today he would be spending all his energy to fight on behalf of the ocean, for continued exploration, particularly of the deep-sea, research, understanding and ultimately encouraging a reciprocal relationship with it before it is too late. Diving Deep: The Life And Times Of Mike deGruy (including a Q&A with filmmaker Mimi deGruy) will screen next Tuesday the 21 July at 7.30pm on www.adventureplus.com Get your tickets now: https://bit.ly/3euDSYM

16.01.2022 Always Was. Always Will be. Grace Wunungmurra is a Senior Ranger for Dhimurru. As part of NAIDOC Week 2020, we asked Grace what she wants the world to look like in the future. "I want the world to be a plastic free environment so that marine wildlife can still be here for the next generation. It will be a better environment to live in and to eat off the land and sea."... Grace's advice for how you can help make this happen is: "Reducing [the] number of plastics that people buy or use, throwing all rubbish in the dump or the bin so it can't go out to sea. Fishing sustainably so there is fish for the next generation." Tune in to our Facebook watch party tonight at 8pm AEDT to find out more about our Sea Shepherd Australia - Marine Debris Campaign remote clean-ups at Djulpan with the Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation.

13.01.2022 One of our talented on-shore volunteers Belinda has spent the past couple of months in isolation creating this piece of art in her home to stay connected with the ocean whilst our volunteer activity has been paused. 10.01.2022 South Australia has become the first state in the country to ban single-use plastics! The Single-use and Other Plastic Products (Waste Avoidance) Bill 2020 passed through the South Australian Parliament yesterday, and bans the manufacture, production, distribution, sale and supply of certain single-use and other plastic products starting with straws, cutlery and beverage stirrers. The legislation, which will come into effect in early 2021 (delayed due to COVID-19 restrict...ions), also establishes a framework to phase-out additional products in the future. Thank you to all our supporters who answered our call to write submissions to the SA Government on single-use plastics as part of our Sea Shepherd Australia - Marine Debris Campaign- youve helped shape this history making legislation which will make a difference to marine life and our oceans. Lets hope Victoria is not long behind #stemthetide #everypiececounts #seashepherd

05.01.2022 There are trawlers all over. You can see them even less than 150 meters from the shores. They use bad net size and kill fish indiscriminately. This article includes some of Sea Shepherd’s work with the Gambian Navy tackling illegal fishing

05.01.2022 Why are more governments partnering with Sea Shepherd? Not only is illegal fishing a threat to marine wildlife and eco systems, but also a growing threat to international security. Commander Claude Berube of the U.S. Naval Academy talks highly of Sea Shepherds work in West Africa, pointing to it as a good model in the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. #StopIUUFishing

05.01.2022 Meet the Sam Simon Deck Team One of the best things about being a deckhand on the Sam Simon is the diversity of jobs performed and the adventurous nature of the work. The deck team usually work outside during daylight hours, but can be called at anytime, day or night, during actions such as launching and driving our fast RHIBs for boardings and arrests. Every day is different in the life of a deckhand as they are always doing varied jobs, often working as a team but al...so performing solo chores and projects. Working with their hands, using power tools and learning new skills are some of the reasons our deck team believe they have the best job onboard. Some deckhands do come to Sea Shepherd with experience in woodwork, welding or seamanship, but a lot of deckhands have no prior experience and with a willingness to learn and a passion for our missions, can be taught the skills needed while onboard. Which department would YOU want to join aboard a Sea Shepherd ship? Deck, Engine Room, Bridge, Galley, or Media? Or would you be a Medical or Marine Science Crewmember? Let us know in the comments! 04.01.2022 Sometimes in conservation what you need is a vessel capable of silently cruising, without disrupting the environment it is in, and thats where Sea Shepherds vessel the Martin Sheen comes in. The Martin Sheen is our research vessel, primarily tasked with researching human-caused pollution and rare cetaceans, but has also been spearheading Operation Virus Hunter in Canada. After several months in quarantine due to the threat of COVID-19, the Martin Sheen is now ready to return to sea and continue its vital research for the health of the oceans. #MeetTheFleet

04.01.2022 Meet the captains of the Sam Simon The Sam Simon is lucky enough to have two great captains at the helm. Our captains, Thomas and Alistair, are both Sea Shepherd veterans, first volunteering in 2010 and 2011. They work on a 3 month rotating schedule, with 3 months at sea, followed by three months on land. The role of a captain is much more than just steering the ship, a true captain must have the respect of their crew and be able to lead through rough weather and tough campaigns. Anyone can hold the helm when the sea is calm, but a leader must chart the course. Photography - Tara Lambourne / Sea Shepherd
