25.01.2022 It’s National Recycling Week and this year's theme is 'Recovery - A future beyond the bin’. Crikey! A whopping 5.4 million tonnes of packaging went into the ...Australian market in 2017-18 and with up to 13 million of tonnes of plastic entering our ocean each year, this Recycling Week, we are asking you to think about the other ‘R’s Refuse Reduce Reuse Refill Repurpose - Recover. We need to turn off the tap of plastic at the source and hold the producers of plastic to account so there’s no chance of it ending up on our coastlines, harming marine life or polluting the ocean. #StemTheTide #ForTheOcean #EveryPieceCounts
24.01.2022 On the 9th of November, the Sea Shepherd vessel Bob Barker, presently campaigning against illegal fishing in the Gulf of Guinea (West Africa) in cooperation wit...h the government of Benin, was approached by a skiff carrying approximately seven to eight persons, some who were armed. The crew implemented anti-piracy measures and mustered in the ship's citadel while armed Beninese Navy sailors on board the Bob Barker successfully deterred the suspected pirates, who retreated. Over the past years, the Gulf of Guinea has seen an increase in acts of piracy. Sea Shepherd has security measures in place to address this threat while working to protect marine wildlife together with partner countries. The emergency preparedness of Bob Barker crew and the professionalism of the Benin Navy kept the ship and all of its crew safe. Sea Shepherd is committed to continuing our work of partnering with governments to stop illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

24.01.2022 Read this powerful article by Wangan and Jagalingou Traditional Owners Council spokesperson Murrawah Johnson "We come from Wangan and Jagalingou country. We ...are the people of the Galilee Basin in Central Queensland, whose lands and waters of the Carmichael and Belyando Rivers area, the place of our ancient and sacred Doongmabulla Springs, will be destroyed by the Adani Corporations coal mine. 22.01.2022 This lucky sperm whale has been cut loose and saved from certain death after becoming entangled in a discarded fishing net. How do nets end up in the ocean? N...ets can be lost overboard in bad weather, become stuck on rocks or coral then cut free and abandoned. Illegal fishing operators who are using banned fishing gear dump them into the ocean to hide the evidence of their activities before entering port. Most fishing operators are responsible and do the right thing but there are those that discard old nets into the ocean when theyre done using them rather than dispose of them onshore. Over 640,000 tons of nets end up in the ocean each year and will remain there for hundreds of years entangling wildlife, killing corals, and shedding microfibres into the ocean. #StemtheTide #ghostnets https://www.bbc.com//whale-freed-from-fishing-net-off-ital

11.01.2022 The Swan River provided a magnificent backdrop for our August clean-up at Bicton in Perth. There might have been a chill in the air but the sun shone bright for... our Point Walter event on Sunday morning where many locals joined with us to care and protect this stunning part of the river. The Noongar name for Point Walter is Dyoondalup meaning place of white sand. This unique area comprises of a mixture of sandy embayments and eroded limestone habitat. The timing for the river clean-up was to ensure the area was free of debris ahead of the Fairy Terns breeding season. Fairy Terns are listed as Vulnerable under both state and federal legislation and are a protected species. Between October and January, the tiny birds, like many shorebirds, will nest above the high-tide mark on sandy beaches, where they lay one or two specked eggs in a shallow scrape in the sand. Unlike other known breeding sites, the Point Walter sandbar is also thought to provide a central meeting place where the Terns travel to find their mates and build up their fat reserves before starting to lay their eggs. With 96 people taking part (just shy of the 100 person COVID event limit in WA), it was a productive morning with many eager families coming down to show their love of the environment, removing over 6,600 pieces of trash. The top items included soft plastic film pieces, cigarette butts, hard plastic remnants (including 280 nurdles and 300 microplastics), plastic food packaging and scraps of rope. Balloons were abundant (22 pieces) and we removed several plastic disposable gloves. That is way too much plastic trash found at such an important area for marine life including birds and dolphins. This clean-up also saw our volunteers taking part in the Break Free From Plastic global Brand Audit during August and September our campaign is taking our clean-ups a step further by documenting the brands found on plastic and exposing the companies which are responsible for plastic pollution. Over 280 branded items were removed during the Point Walter clean-up. Thank you to everyone who joined us for a fantastic morning at Point Walter, including the many local students from Santa Maria, Penrhos and Aquinas Colleges who were completing their school community service hours with us. A huge shout out to Michael Goh from Astrophotobear for capturing the event and to Brian from the City of Melville for helping to make this community clean-up happen. Our next Perth clean-up is scheduled for 13 September at South Beach save the date! : Michael Goh #swanriver #BrandAudit2020 #everypiececounts #seashepherd #rivercleanup #cityofmelville #nooceanplastic

10.01.2022 Sometimes it's hard to cut through the greenwash versus genuine environmental stewardship. Take the buzz word recycling - increasingly it feels like recycli...ng is promoted as a way of justifying plastic packaging (recyclable or not). Kit Kat Australia has launched a new initiative called 'Give the Planet a Break'. It says when you recycle your Kit Kat at Coles and Woolworths it will be made into things like outdoor furniture, bollards, air conditioner mounting blocks and mini wheel stops. The thing is, for the last two years Kit Kat's parent company Nestlé was named as the No. 2 and No. 3 top polluting brand in the 2019 and 2018 respective Break Free From Plastic Global Brand Audits. They earned this dubious title from everyday people all around the world doing beach clean-ups and recording the brands on the trash they found. Nestlé’s vision is that none of their packaging, including plastics, ends up in landfill, in oceans, lakes and rivers. As the Global Brand Audits have shown, unfortunately that vision is far from reality. To quote Kit Kat Life’s about choices. Plastic packaging is a design choice and the price of all this plastic waste and pollution is being borne by local governments, communities, coastlines, oceans and to marine life. What the world needs is for the producers of plastic to Give the Planet a Break from all the plastic they produce! Recycling is not the silver bullet they would like us believe will solve the global waste and pollution crisis. We need to turn off the plastic tap at the source, otherwise it will be planet plastic. #breakfreefromplastic #kitkat #nestle #plasticpollution #globalbrandaudit #planetearth #seashepherd #everypiececounts #StemtheTide #plasticfree #ForTheOcean

08.01.2022 Oh Well, Its only Mauritius, Just Another Spill, Nothing to See Here. Commentary by Captain Paul Watson Sea Shepherd volunteers have responded to these disaste...rs for decades and each and every time, we warned that it would happen again. And again and again. And once again the response from governments and the oil companies is inadequate as if the spills are just part of their business. So whats to be done about Mauritius? Local people will rise to the occasion and they will get their hands dirty and suffer the health consequences. The Japanese oil company will pay some fines. No one will go to jail. The Japanese government will provide a foreign aid package to Mauritius to shut them up and the oil shipping business will carry on towards another incident. ___________________________________________ https://www.nbcnews.com//mauritius-races-contain-oil-spill

07.01.2022 But in this moment of unimaginable difficulty, many are already seeing hope in a green recovery: a more protective ... more inclusive economic model that wou...ld contribute to building more resilient societies. In this new approach, governments have the opportunity and the responsibility to transform sustainability commitments into action, both in the short and the long term. Addressing plastic pollution should be a key piece of this rebuilding effort, and governments can help keep everyone on track. What do you think? Will the authorities take this opportunity to redesign their procedures? https://www.devex.com//opinion-addressing-plastic-pollutio #StemtheTide

05.01.2022 For the second year running, Sea Shepherd and the Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation have come together for a remote clean-up at Djulpan in North-East Arnhem Land,... Northern Territory. With plastic inundating this sacred area along the Gulf of Carpentaria, the ten-day collaborative conservation campaign resulted in over a tonne of trash a day being removed by Sea Shepherds volunteer crew and the Dhimurru Indigenous Rangers. Arriving back at Djulpan it wasnt just plastic that had come ashore a highway of turtle tracks and nests could be seen across the beach, but so too were dead turtles impacted by the debris. This collaborative campaign serves as a reminder of the importance of beach clean-ups in stemming the tide of marine plastic pollution for the health of our oceans and survival of marine life. 03.01.2022 South Australia has become the first state in the country to ban single-use plastics! The Single-use and Other Plastic Products (Waste Avoidance) Bill 2020 ...passed through the South Australian Parliament yesterday, and bans the manufacture, production, distribution, sale and supply of certain single-use and other plastic products starting with straws, cutlery and beverage stirrers. The legislation, which will come into effect in early 2021 (delayed due to COVID-19 restrictions), also establishes a framework to phase-out additional products in the future. Thank you to all our supporters who answered our call to write submissions to the SA Government on single-use plastics as part of our Sea Shepherd Australia - Marine Debris Campaign- youve helped shape this history making legislation which will make a difference to marine life and our oceans. #stemthetide #everypiececounts #seashepherd
02.01.2022 Our Marine Debris Campaign recently hosted an interactive STEM session with three Year 6 classes from Penrhos College in Perth. Sea Shepherd campaigner Marina ...discussed the importance of healthy oceans, the increasing issue of marine plastic pollution and the resulting impacts to marine life, oceans and coastlines. The students were shown plastic items with turtle and fish bites that had been collected from our remote beach clean-ups. Marina shared with all female cohort why Sea Shepherd hosts beach clean-ups (and what we sadly find!), details about our annual remote campaigns at Moreton Island and Arnhem Land and screened our short documentary ‘Return To Djulpan’. The incursion finished off with some sustainability tips and then it was time for the students to show Marina the eye catching and educational displays created by the students themselves using items from our beach clean-ups. Thank you to Penrhos College for inviting Sea Shepherd to the school and providing their students with an opportunity to learn about the marine plastic pollution issue here in Australia. #PenrhosCollege #Sustainability #SeaShepherd #StemTheTide #ForTheOcean #EveryPieceCounts
