25.01.2022 We want to save our oceans and our planet no matter how inconvenient people may think that is. Captain Paul Watson (2014) We are ruthlessly overfishing the seas and much of it is being done illegally. Virtually every commercial fishing operation in the world is in a state of collapse. We are polluting the ocean with plastic, petro-chemicals, agricultural run-off and sewage. We are inflicting acidification, noise pollution and destroying coastal habitats for development. A thi...rd of all the marine life the fishing industry takes is called forage fish and it is extracted from the sea specifically to feed livestock, farmed prawns, shrimp and salmon, and house cats. In fact domestic cats are eating more fish than all the seals in the ocean! There are 2 billion cats and a half a billion dogs in the world and less than fifty million seals in the sea, yet fishermen whine about seals eating all the fish. Change comes about because of action, not because of words and unfortunately, the planet will not be saved just by taking shorter showers, recycling your trash or driving in an electric car. Yet through imagination, discipline and science we can mitigate our impact upon nature. Bringing about real change is always difficult, but unless we can shoulder these difficult choices, the future especially for those as yet unborn will be impossibly difficult. 23.01.2022 The rising demand for disposing of single-use face masks is adding to the glut of plastic pollution. Disposable face masks are being used and discarded carelessly posing potential risk, with many masks ending up in our oceans and waterways. These masks contain materials that do not recycle and are not biodegradable. Simply another form of unnecessary contamination ... we need to Say NO to single-use face masks! Reusable face masks make sense as they can be washed and r...eused as often as needed, and you don't have to think about disposing of them. They are comfortable to wear and are an economically sound purchase. Team ... you can help save our oceans with our organic cotton reusable face masks. With our famous Jolly Roger logo we have got you covered. You can catch us this Sunday the 27th at Queens Park (Frogs Hollow) from 8AM. 20.01.2022 Our favourite aquatic flightless birds are under threat. By 2050, it is estimated that nearly every species of seabird, including penguins, will be accidentally eating plastic debris. Want to help these little guys? Take action against plastic pollution by reducing your plastic footprint and saying no to single use plastics. Here’s another healthy idea ... why not join a marine debris clean-up with Sea Shepherd.@seashepherdaustralia ... 17.01.2022 TOTOABA TRAFFICKING ARRESTS MADE IN MEXICO Mexican authorities arrested several individuals this week under charges of Organized Crime - Crimes Against the Environment. These charges relate to the trafficking of totoaba swim bladders and carry a sentence of possible jail time. This is the first time that charges of this nature have been applied in Mexico.... Totoaba poaching is the primary cause of the decline of the vaquita - the world’s most endangered marine mammal, which is endemic to a small region in Mexico’s Upper Gulf of California. Vaquitas, which are approximately the same size as totoabas, become entangled in the deadly illegal nets and drown. There are less than 20 vaquitas left alive. Sea Shepherd applauds the Attorney General’s Office and Mexican authorities for their swift action and continued commitment to protecting the vaquita through the prosecution of crimes relating to totoaba trafficking. 16.01.2022 Since 2000. at least 10,949 sharks have been killed by contractors of the Queensland Government's Shark Control Program. This program targets and intentionally kills 19 species of sharks. However 95 different species of marine animals and birds have been caught and killed in the past 20 years, with many others recorded as 'released alive' though 'released - fate unknown' would be a much more truthful status. Is killing sharks acceptable? Is this number of by-catch acceptable,... especially considering that we now have effective and economically viable non-lethal options? Killing sharks and other marine life is not, and never has been, an effective beach safety program. This is outdated thinking, outdated technology and people are given merely a false sense of security whilst marine life are given a death sentence. 14.01.2022 Always Was. Always Will Be. Grace Wunungmurra is a Senior Ranger for Dhimurru. As part of NAIDOC Week 2020, we asked Grace what she wants the world to look like in the future. "I want the world to be a plastic-free environment so that marine wildlife can still be here for the next generation. It will be a better environment to live in and to eat off the land and sea."... Grace's advice for how you can help make this happen is: "Reducing [the] number of plastics that people buy or use, throwing all rubbish in the dump or the bin so it can't go out to sea. Fishing sustainably so there is fish for the next generation." Tune in to our Facebook watch party tonight at 8pm AEDT to find out more about our Sea Shepherd Australia - Marine Debris Campaign remote clean-ups at Djulpan with the Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation. @seashepherdaustralia

12.01.2022 Australia is home to around 180 species of sharks including protected and endangered species. Tragically, populations of large sharks have rapidly and drastically declined, particularly in recent decades. Nearly a quarter of shark species are listed as threatened or endangered by the IUCN. 11.01.2022 A new study by Dr Andrew Colefax shows SMART drumlines do not prevent sharks moving near to surf breaks. It also found that acoustic receivers often detect sharks that do not move closer to shore. Dr Colefax’s research is focused on developing drones for shark surveillance and beach safety. He is focused on developing shark surveillance procedures and improving detection rates of animals in the water. We need modern shark bite mitigation solutions that protect swimme...rs, surfers, divers and marine life too. 07.01.2022 #NAIDOC Week is all about recognising Australia's First Nations people and celebrating as a multicultural society both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and culture. The theme for NAIDOC 2020 is: Always Was, Always Will Be ... and recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. It also acknowledges that hundreds of Nations and our cultures covered this continent. All were managing the land - the biggest esta...te on Earth - to sustainably provide for their future. This week the incredible artist Zachary Bennett-Brook, who's design is used in the Sea Shepherd Acknowledgement of Country graphic, is sharing some words: "I create artworks which share personal stories and are often influenced by our natural surroundings. Water plays a really important role in my life and especially in the artworks I paint. As a surfer and someone who loves our Ocean I think it's really important we all look after our natural surroundings, because if we don't they wont be around for ever or the same for future generations to enjoy. They are amazing places which hold home to so many animals that need our help. I believe a positive shift will occur with time if we learn to also care for one another." 07.01.2022 KEEP THE EMAILS COMING. Contact your Senators today at the link in our bio. The Federal Government's Recycling and Waste Reduction Bill 2020 was expected to be debated in the Senate on Monday, but there’s been a slight delay in the Parliament which we can use to our advantage! - This Bill could be the vehicle for a national ban on single-use plastics and introduce compulsory actions on plastic packaging together we can be the fuel driving the change! ... - If you haven’t already emailed your local Senators please do it now! Already thousands of emails have been sent telling Senators around the country why we love our oceans and marine life and why we need to protect it against increasing plastic pollution! - This action literally takes less than a minute of your time but could be the world of difference to marine life and our coastlines. 07.01.2022 Shrimp fisheries are some of the most destructive in the world, catching about six times as much bycatch as shrimp. With over 300,000 small whales, dolphins, and porpoises dying each year from entanglement in fishing gears, bycatch is causing one death every two minutes. It is the single-largest cause of mortality for small cetaceans. Learn more and find out about our fight to stop Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated fishing at SeaShepherdGlobal.org ... 05.01.2022 Leading from the front .... "When I was 14-years-old, I saw a photograph of a whale being pulled up the slipway of an 8,000 tonne factory whaling ship plying the Antarctic. I knew then that I wanted to be one of the people who gets between the whales and the whalers pursuing them." Leadership and motivation comes from many facets within the Sea Shepherd movement and certainly none better than from Captain Peter Hammarstedt who joined Sea Shepherd as soon as he was old enough... to apply. For over 15 years, Captain Hammarstedt has sailed the seven seas from the Labrador Coast to Antarctica and has helped to save so many lives! 04.01.2022 @apexharmony For a tiger shark caught on a drumline, this is their fate. The female tiger shark in these photos was found hooked on a drumline, still alive. However, she wasn't set free like an iconic humpback whale would be when they are found distressed and struggling to breathe. Instead, she is killed. Our Apex Harmony crew followed the government contractor who towed her behind their boat, entangled and in pain for over an hour, then she was shot, gutted and her body ...dumped. Why does she deserve such different treatment? Many people are awestruck to witness the magnificent humpback whales from either a boat or from the coastline and the media loves to highlight the beauty of whales. Just as people travel to places where they can see humpback whales in their home, people also travel to destinations known for tiger sharks and other sharks to swim with these beautiful animals. Many who have had the opportunity to dive with sharks have also fallen in love. Tiger sharks often swim around scuba divers peacefully, challenging the myth, promoted by the media and those who profit from killing them, that they are dangerous. Instead, they should be respected. Surely, this beautiful, intelligent and important creature deserves to be protected too. 02.01.2022 The WA State Government’s ‘Plan for Plastics’ includes the phase-out of single-use plastic items such as cutlery, plates, stirrers, straws, thick plastic bags, polystyrene food containers and helium balloon releases over the next three years. After these initial actions, plastic barrier/produce bags, cotton buds with plastic shafts, polystyrene packaging, microbeads, and oxo-degradable plastics (plastics designed to break up into fragments at a faster rate) will be phased out.... The plan also includes actions on prepacked fruit and vegetables, takeaway food containers and plastic packaging - swift action on plastic packaging needs to be a priority for all governments! "The time to act is now; plastic pollution is one of the greatest threats to wildlife around the world and, in 2018-19, only 11 per cent of Australia's plastic waste was recycled with 89 per cent sent to landfill, said WA Environment Minister Stephen Dawson. Sea Shepherd would like to acknowledge the hundreds of supporters who put forward submissions and took the on-line survey during the community consultation on the single-use plastics issues paper in 2019, which has shaped the content of the Plastics Plan. 98% of respondents were strongly in favour of actions to reduce the impacts of single-use plastics, including 98.63% of people (like us!) concerned that plastic litter is harming our wildlife with 98.61% stating that plastics end up polluting our waterways and oceans. Since 2015, Sea Shepherd beach clean-ups in WA have shown the west coast has a problem with plastic - we've removed over ONE MILLION pieces of trash in WA alone, with 75-80% being plastic. The initiatives in the WA Plastics Plan is one part of the journey all West Aussies need to do to help address the increasing use of plastic, waste and pollution on the beaches. Every state in Australia should have legislation to ban problem plastics do you agree?
