24.01.2022 Here's a close look at the finished artwork by Torres Strait Islands Artist Glen Mackie (Kei Kalak). . Glen has chosen to depict his family totemic designs of the dugong, sea turtle and manta ray in his unmistakably bold ‘minar’, or infill-design style. Nestled amongst his own invented geometric repeating water pattern, he retells the myths and legendary stories he's inherited from older family members, and harnesses the visible impacts of changing weather patterns due to glo...bal warming. There's a clear ripple in the water patterns, showing that the changing weather will continue to effect everything from marine species to communities. You can see the work in it's entirety on the corner of Minnie and Grafton Streets at Munro Martin Parklands. . @jackbirtles . . . @pangeaseed @seawalls_ #glenmackie #SWAUS2018 #seawallsaustralia #seawallsaus #seawallscairns See more

22.01.2022 Here it is!...the full 28 metres of the Holloway's Beach Tower - transformed by legendary German Post Graffiti duo Low Bros. . Low Bros share: "The work focuses on Coral Bleaching, a negative environmental condition brought on by human stressors such as pollution, rising sea temperatures and over-fishing. This threat affects the fragile ecosystems of tropical seas, particularly the #GreatBarrierReef. . As with most of our works the wolves are the protagonists, the count...erparts for human nature. We have shown them floating underwater among the reefs, in reality both our aesthetic and the coral share a vibrant palette but the bleaching is stripping the colour from the bottom up, creeping over the surrounding fauna and even the wolves themselves . The use of colour, or rather lack thereof; points to the connectedness which is central to our work. We hope the work will raise awareness of the fact that this issue is not localised to the reef or even just the seas. The disturbance of this fragile balance could spell the collapse of the reef structure, resulting in a significant impact in our economic and political climate. Nature is not something we should have to choose protect, If we loose our biodiversity, we loose life." . Drone footage captured by Jack Birtles . Thanks to the Cairns Regional Council for partnering with Sea Walls Australia for this year's event, and for campaigning with our team for the transformation of this incredible coastal structure - now acting as a visual beacon for the region. 22.01.2022 Cairns local @walspaintshop on his recently completed artwork 'EVIL BLEACH!' - "Coral Bleaching is fast spreading across the Great Barrier Reef, leaving almost no corner of this natural wonder untouched. A combination of Warmer ocean temperatures, agricultural runoff, coastal erosion runoff and increased interference by man has left the worlds largest living organism in a precarious state. With the bleaching also comes the inevitable and obvious loss of habit and therefore re...duction of sea life inhabiting those reefs, slow death! Yet, many residents living right on its doorstep remain seemingly oblivious to the omnipresent, creeping death just offshore and its overall devastating impact on not only the environment but industries and lifestyles communities built around its very existence. I live here, this is my home and the home of my family for generations, we all have our own special connection to it. It makes me very sad to think future generations of my family might not to be able to view this wonder in full technicolor bloom. By emulating classic horror movie posters, I aimed to grab the viewers attention, via a tried and true method a bold, colorful, narrative-based picture and the glaring, simple title alluding to the Monster within..the Shock! The Horror! Evil Bleach!! But, will it be enough? Will we be shocked enough by the tales from the deep or will we just sit back and wait for the next screening." . @yoshi_travel . . . @pangeaseed @seawalls_ #wally #SWAUS2018 #seawallsaustralia #seawallsaus #seawallscairns See more

20.01.2022 'Sea of Plastic' is the dynamic work of local Cairns Artist Andrea Huelin Andrea transformed the entire breadth of this building into a delicately crafted, solemn landscape for students and visitors to @tafenorth. . Andrea: "In researching this topic I became aware of the immensity of the problem of plastic pollution in the ocean, so I wanted to communicate the scale of the problem with this ‘seascape' of endless single-use drink bottles. The blue and green transparent bott...les are intended to convey the crystal clear, clean water of my childhood home in Western Australia". . Jack Birtles . . . 19.01.2022 We believe we found the perfect spot to host Western Australian Amok Island. This end of Lake Street sees a tide of visitors to the region, and his 'Malabar Grouper with juvenile Golden Trivially' is the perfect visual welcome. . Amok Island: "Malabar Groupers can grow up to 2,3 meters, and juvenile golden Trevally often hang around big animals like these for protection. A visual example of the many ways how different species interact and need each other. A delicate balance w...here every species has its place and importance. The Malabar Grouper is listed as near threatened. Groupers have a late reproduction age and are facing threats of fishing with animals being caught before they can reproduce." . Jack Birtles . . . 17.01.2022 We were lucky enough to have local Cairns Artist Caroline Mudge paint live at our Festival Launch! Caroline believes that it is part of the Australian culture to want to live near the coast, and wanted to share how Mangrove ecosystems are vital to the biological productivity and provide a critical nursery environment for a vast number of marine life. Caroline: " 'Fringe Dwellers' tackles these issues and at its center features a Mother Earth 'warrior' type figure harboring h...er family of fringe dwellers, each seeking refuge in her own healthy fringing environment. We need to protect and celebrate these incredibly diverse and vital ecosystems which nurture around 75% of coastal fishery and crustacean catches...without healthy mangroves, there are no fish!" . 17.01.2022 We're so proud to share ‘It All Comes Out In The Wash' by Toowoomba Artist Ian McCallum which can be found at the entrance to @cairnscentral. . This work addresses humanity's use of the ocean and the flow-on effects connecting our lifestyle with other animals. . Ian shares: "Different species interact in what can be thought of as an economic system in their environments. In this instance I looked specifically at the Cleaner Wrasse a small fish, that lives from the Red Sea... to Australia and the whole Indo-Pacific, daily they eat the parasites and dead scales off of other fish. Each Cleaner Wrasse sets up shop at a particular spot on the reef, like a string of car washes, and the client fish line up at their favorite station to have their parasites removed. I find this idea of economic trade within fish interesting as it relates to the elements I use in my practice. . Ian collects imagery of old signage, discarded packaging, and advertising and weaves these elements into his paintings. "The focus on just our own economy can benefit from a shift to take into account that there are other systems, specifically in the ocean, out there being hugely affected by urban coastal development, overfishing and therefore poor reef health". . . . 16.01.2022 'Fade Out' was created by George Rose who was our Sea Walls Artist In Residence this year at Bentley Park College. . George: "The Humpback Grouper, the Brindle Bass, and the Whiptail stingray are all listed as threatened and endangered on the IUCN world conservation red list, these species are at the risk of overfishing and changing habitats due to global warming changing their reef environments. The mural depicts the Humpback Grouper and the Brindle Bass facing each other a...s if each was watching the other passing into obscurity. The background pattern is created using the patterning detail from a Whiptail stingray. The details on each fish slowly fade into a solid colour leaving only the silhouetted shape of the fish which once was." . Every child is born a naturalist, so it's with great pride we could connect the students with George Rose. Not only has she gifted the school with such a meaningful artwork, she's also empowered a really special bunch of humans to become ocean stewards themselves! . Jack Birtles . . . 13.01.2022 Here's a zoom-in on the finished artwork by UK Artist Cracked Ink. . Cracked Ink: "My artwork encapsulates multiple different ocean matters including overfishing, plastic pollution, deep sea oil drilling, rising sea levels and many more different facts and solutions alongside my illustration. I wanted to focus on highlighting the many varied challenges our oceans are facing at the moment, all adding up to one gigantic problem. The primary task we have ahead is educating and c...hanging humans attitudes towards all of these issues. 11.01.2022 We need to respect the oceans and take care of them as if our lives depended on it. Because they do. Sylvia Earle - . We had an awesome experience SCUBA diving on and exploring the wonders of the legendary Great Barrier Reef for @pangeaseed Foundation’s @seawallsaustralia | @seawalls_ Artists for Oceans activation earlier this year. . In collaboration with our awesome project partners @paditv and @divers_den, we scuba certified a group of @seawallsaustralia supporting ARTiv...ists, helping to make a direct connection between the artists and the reef before we began bringing the oceans into the streets of Cairns, Australia. . Here, guest ARTivist @mrcinzah (New Zealand) gives insight into his experience learning to scuba diving on the reef and how that impacted his mural focusing on ocean health and conservation. . 10.01.2022 A stunning afternoon shot of the finished work by acclaimed Sydney Artist Phibs Official-Graffiti/Fine Art/Street Art - 'It's a Matter of Time'. . PHIBS: "My artwork hopes to give a sense of urgency and raise awareness of the damage and impact we are having on our reefs and oceans. It's only a matter of time before irreversible damage is done and a whole ecosystem could be potentially be wiped out if not severely affected. It is up to all of us to protect and care for the wor...ld around us by making some fundamental changes to the way we think and live. . Overfishing, pollution (especially plastic) and a rise in ocean temperatures are just some of the leading key factors affecting our oceans today. The thoughtless impact we have on our oceans will inevitably effect us all in the long run. Everything is connected including us. The coral trout is also present in the mural. A stunningly beautiful fish that is also at risk of being overfished." . We'd also like to thank PHIBS for being such a hero and using a range of leftover acrylic paints that were floating around amongst our large group of artists. By utilising extra colours, mistints and leftover hues, this guy helped us to seriously reduce our paint footprint through the festival. . Jack Birtles . . . 09.01.2022 ‘Of Hope and Warmth Divided’ by Sunshine Coast Artist David Houghton was our contribution to the Babinda Community. . David shares about his process "along the way I felt compelled to add more orange, contributing to more warmth overall in the artwork". The circles and angles are a clever design element expressing the tangible effects of global warming. "Ecosystems are divided, and the coral and earth habitat suffers in turn". David's optimistic about the future and holds a l...ot of hope for our marine environments..."as humans we can change - considering humpbacks were dangerously close to extinction at one point, it's also hopeful to think there's a regrowth in their populations". . 09.01.2022 Cinzah's final artwork 'Symbiosis', completed on the McLeod Street stretch of Cairns Central. . Cinzah shares: "Symbiosis is defined as ‘the living together of unlike organisms.’ The ocean relies upon each individual creature, ecosystem, and form of life to work together in harmony for its survival. While diving on the #GreatBarrierReef, I was amazed by the level of biodiversity and rich abundance of life, the intimate connections of nature, and the codependence. - Espec...ially between unexpected creatures, such as Moray Eels and rainbow trouts pairing up to hunt together, clown fish and poisonous stinging anemone, and groupers with their golden trevally. The abundance of life was also mirrored by the stark reality of man's impact on the oceans, hammering home just how fragile these ecosystems really are. . The mural addresses two different realms of realities, showcasing alternate outcomes and futures for our oceans. The left side of the artwork expresses the beauty of the world's oceans and reefs, as they once were, still are in some places, and could be in the future if we honor our relationship with the ocean. The right side of the mural showcases mans current impact on the worlds reef systems, with the effects of global warming - coral bleaching and ocean acidification, as well as plastic pollution. A little visual reminder that there are always two paths in life, two choices with alternate outcomes, it’s up to us to decide which direction to take." . Huge thanks to @paditv for partnering with SWAUS to certify Cinzah on the reef, so he could meaningfully and authentically respond through his work. . Yoshitaro Yanagita . . . 07.01.2022 PangeaSeed Foundation's inaugural Australian Sea Walls: Artists for Oceans project could not have been hosted in a more appropriate location! Situated in far-north Queensland, the regional city of Cairns is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, the world's largest living organism. This year, it played host to Sea Walls Australia. Like reefs across the globe, the Great Barrier Reef is under immense pressure from global climate change, so we set out to give this UNESCO World ...Heritage Site a creative voice and inspire the community to become stewards of the ocean via art and activism or as we call it; ARTivism. With the generous support of our dedicated ARTivists, partners, and volunteers, 20 purpose-driven, ocean environmental public murals were created, highlighting a range of topics relevant to the conservation of the Great Barrier Reef. Over the course of two weeks, Cairns was transformed into a mural capital of Far North Queensland. In addition to the mural painting, we hosted a public film night, panel discussions, student workshops, and even SCUBA certified the artists in partnership with our friends at PADI. At PangeaSeed Foundation, we believe a drop of paint can create an ocean of change and that through global collaboration; we can help save our seas. 06.01.2022 'If We Lose Our Reef, We Lose Ourselves' - the momentous portrait by Claire Foxton celebrating Aboriginal elder Henrietta Marrie. . Claire: "Henrietta Marrie is an Aboriginal elder, community leader and activist from the Gimuy Walubara Yindinji tribe of Cairns. She’s passionate about the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage, ancient knowledge systems, and biodiversity and has pushed through barriers and stereotypes to be a voice for her people on a world stage, enc...ouraging young Indigenous people to step up through education and action. . With warmth and enthusiasm, Henrietta welcomed the idea of a portrait of her as a way to honor her contributions but also invite a discussion around the impacts of the Great Barrier Reef’s dire state on the relationship between earth, spirit, and identity so intrinsic to Indigenous culture. When I asked Henrietta what it would mean to lose the reef she replied without hesitation, ‘everything is connected - If we lose our reef, we lose ourselves’. . My mural seeks to illustrate this connectedness by concealing the vibrant colors, textures, and patterns of the reef within Henrietta’s silhouette. Parts are washed away or sink back into the wall to visually represent the cumulative effect of loss - if one is washed away, so too is the other." . Jack Birtles . . . 06.01.2022 We're really pleased to share this capture of Cairns local Rick Beresford durational artwork for Sea Walls Australia. Regular Rick began his work painting live at the festival launch, and revisited it through the week - manipulating it to reflect his personal experiences with coral bleaching. . Regular Rick: "I have lived in Far North Queensland for the past 12 years and have been lucky enough to experience the Great Barrier Reef at its best and unfortunately at it’s worst.... Once you have seen coral bleaching firsthand it is hard to forget, especially when you know what it once was. The first time I experienced bleaching I remember thinking how lifeless it had become and how the coral had taken on an almost graveyard, bone-like quality. By producing a piece that morphed elements of human anatomy with bleached coral I have attempted to both humanise the issue and reflect the graveyard feeling I experienced. . 01.01.2022 Our third instalment from the recent Maroochydore activations. We were lucky enough to host Low Bros in Cairns, and so we invited them to bookend their Australian trip by visiting the Sunshine Coast.
