09.01.2022 #NAIDOC2020 History - NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920s which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.... With growing awareness of the distinct cultural histories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, NADOC was expanded to recognize Torres Strait Islander people and culture. The committee then became known as the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC). This new name has become the title for the whole week, not just the day. Each year, a theme is chosen to reflect the important issues and events for NAIDOC Week.#AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe #NAIDOC2020 https://www.naidoc.org.au/

01.01.2022 1925 October: This week is Gambling Harm Awareness Week. We’re encouraging everyone to #TalkShareSupport. When we share our stories, we can start to reduce gambling harm in our community. Learn more at: gamblershelp.com.au/letstalk Key messages Gambling affects more people than you realise. The effects of gambling are often hidden and not spoken about because it can be a sensitive issue that makes people feel uncomfortable. The effects of gambling may seem small to b...egin with, but it can escalate easily. Anyone can experience the negative effects of gambling, but it’s not something we talk about openly. When we talk about gambling harm as a community, it makes it easier for those affected to reach out to someone. Talking is the first step in reducing gambling harm in our community. Sharing the effects that gambling may be having on you, or those around you, can provide relief and make it more manageable. Seeking support, or to supporting someone can make a crucial difference. Sharing personal experiences of gambling harm helps break down the stigma. This 1925 October 2020, let's TALK. SHARE. SUPPORT. and prevent gambling harm together. South East Community Links in partnership with Connect Health & Community with the support of Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation are working together with Afghan, Burmese and Vietnamese groups who are co-designing resources and materials that best suit and support the reduction of gambling harm in each of these communities. We will share these materials once they are developed and ready to share with the public. So, keep an eye out for some wonderful culturally appropriate in-language resources which will be shared with you all around Jan/Feb 2021 and that you can use it to talk about gambling harm with your friends, family, and the community. Keep you posted! If you would like to know more about these campaigns/resources being developed, please get in touch with: Divya Mohan, Practitioner - Advocate South East Community Links Email: [email protected] or Phone: 0413 925 612 See more

01.01.2022 Hi SECL friends, CHO Covid-19 Restrictions and Victoria Police Response Police are enforcing Stage Four restrictions across Metropolitan Melbourne and Stage Three restrictions across Regional Victoria from 11.59pm Wednesday 5 August.... Victoria Police will be highly visible and issuing $1,652 fines for deliberate, obvious, and blatant breaches of the Chief Health Officer directions. This includes those not adhering to curfew, traveling further than 5km from home, or disregarding time limits around exercise or the number of household members permitted to shop per day. The only approved reasons to leave home between 8pm and 5am are for traveling to and from work, receiving medical care, or providing care. Highly-visible vehicle checkpoints supported by mobile patrols will continue to be used to deter potential breaches and ensure people are complying with the Chief Health Officer’s directions. Victoria Police will be conducting mobile patrols, both in vehicles and on foot across the state. The mobile vehicle patrols will utilise Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology to scan car registration details and identify the residential addresses of those license holders. Police will also continue to be proactively patrolling regional transport hubs, including at train stations and ferry terminals, to ensure that people are complying with the Chief Health Officer's directions. For the sake of the health and safety of every Victorians, we need people to follow these directives. Victoria Police will not hesitate to issue fines to those who choose to selfishly and blatantly show a disregard for community safety. If people are concerned about breaches of the CHO directions, they should report it to the Police Assistance Line on 131 444. Individuals found not to be wearing a face-covering or breaching curfew will be enforced as part of the proactive patrols police are regularly doing through Operation Sentinel. For more information, contact: DHHS COVID hotline on 1800 675 398
