25.01.2022 Many Australians will not immediately associate the Lifeline name with emergency food relief, but Lifeline Darling Downs and South-West Queensland are key partners in SecondBite Queensland network. The Lifeline Darling Downs team began distributing emergency food hampers several years ago in order to cover a gap in local service provision and have only increased their activity in this area since. In 2017, Lifeline Darling Downs joined our Community Connect program, partneri...ng with Coles Clifford Gardens to add nutritious fresh fruit and vegetables to the food assistance available from their Toowoomba headquarters. In July 2020 an expanded Lifeline team established a brand new partnership with Queenslands newest Coles Store at Glenvale. These valuable local partnerships will continue to assist Lifeline Darling Downs in meeting the ever-increasing demand on their emergency food relief service, which in any given month can see upwards of 120 food parcels distributed to local people in crisis situations. Lifeline Darling Downs leadership team (L) Kirsten McGovern and (R) Karen Murray with a Single Pack Emergency Food Relief hamper. This will be distributed completely free of charge along with fresh fruit, vegetables and bread donated by Coles and ALDI via SecondBite Community Connect. 25.01.2022 In late June the SecondBite team was contacted by Meals on Wheels Queensland (MoWQ) with an offer to donate airline-size meals for people in collaboration with The Lottery Office. Our Community Connect charity partners Belong Brisbane (@Acacia Ridge Community Support Inc.) swung into action in response, and during July collected hundreds of high-quality soups, desserts and main meals from MoWQ warehouse facility. Thanks to MoWQ, The Lottery Office and Belong Brisbane, isola...ted and vulnerable people who had been worrying where their next meal was coming from sat down to delicious three-course dinners. Great work team! Margaret of Inala, and Tim Early of Belong. Margaret doesnt have the appetite she once had and often leaves food from standard size meals on her plate going to waste - waste she can ill afford with no savings and relying on the aged pension. With that in mind we carefully selected product that will help put a nutritious meal on the table in the right size. Margaret was close to tears as she accepted an airline size, three-course ready-to-eat meal of soup, mash/veg/meat and a dessert. #EndingWasteEndingHunger #SecondBite #foodrelief

21.01.2022 Nandos food rescue program: No Chuckin our Chicken provides surplus chicken that was otherwise headed for landfill to suitably identified charities through SecondBite. This is an incredibly important and rewarding program for both the restaurant staff and local community partners. The program not only changes the lives of those who benefit from the donations, it is life changing for Nandos staff too. Several Nandos restaurant teams have developed strong relationships wi...th their charity partners and are volunteering to help them in other ways. Many say it is one of their favourite things about working at Nandos as they can see firsthand that they are making a real difference in their community. The bonus is the positive impact Nandos efforts have towards reducing their sustainability footprint. Saving perfectly good food from being wasted is satisfying on so many levels. 08.01.2022 We began our relationship with Empower Australia in mid-June 2020 in response to the overwhelming demand for food relief that came as a result from COVID-19. With the support of Empower Australia, we have been able to rescue 42,456kg of food and re-purpose it to provide 84,912 meals to help address the growing issue of food insecurity that metropolitan Melbourne is currently facing. To help further support their operations, SecondBite have provided Empower a 40ft reefer to increase their storage capacity for frozen and chilled goods which will be critical in providing further positive health outcomes to those in need.

07.01.2022 Congratulations to the team at Multicultural Australia’s Tucker Time program who was named one of the state’s top training programs last week. The Rockhampton office’s food rescue and hospitality skills project won Community Training Initiative of the Year as part of the Queensland Government awards. Collecting fresh produce from generous donors is the first step for Tucker Time trainees Dayne Keefe and Clair Vale Tucker Time not only taught them skills in the commercial kit...chen, but also gave trainees increased confidence and improved networking skills in their search for employment. Multicultural Australia teamed up with SecondBite which helped them collect leftover food from retailers Coles, ALDI Australia and Nando's. The trainees accessed the kitchens at The Salvation Army Australia to transform those ingredients into wholesome and well-presented meals which were donated to people in need. Multicultural Australia also worked with the Rockhampton Regional Council to provide workshops to the public on reducing food wastage. Dayne Keefe from Yeppoon is one of the trainees who joined the Tucker Time program to gain current qualifications and skills. I knew the hospitality experience and current references would make me more competitive in applying for jobs, he said. We had a go at dehydrating and preserving food as well as presenting attractive meals and now I always use fresh garlic when I’m cooking at home. It’s also a good feeling to take food which would otherwise go to waste and distribute it to homeless people and people in shelters. Congratulations on a successful and impactful program.

06.01.2022 SecondBite food travelled over 1,400km north of our warehouse in Belmont WA to remote Tom Price and Paraburdoo communities. Providing bulk food to Tom Price Youth Support Associations food bank to be issued to people who may be experiencing hardship as a direct result of COVID-19. The pandemic is not just related to people testing positive to the virus, but has a much deeper impact for those that have lost work due to government restrictions which closed businesses, are waiting on #JobSeeker payments as a result of job loss, have had hours cut or who are trying to navigate through financial pressures as a result of #COVID19. 01.01.2022 Where there’s goodwill, there’s a way to overcome barriers and make rescued food reach further. Community Connect partner, Carbal Medical Services collect food donations from local Coles to assist some of the most vulnerable people in Queensland’s Toowoomba region. When logistics pressures forced the Carbal team to cease collections from Coles, this valuable source of nutrition was at risk of disappearing from the range of health services which Aboriginal and Torres Strait ...Islander Community Controlled Health Care Organisation (ATSICCHO) Carbal is able to provide. Bulk collections made from SecondBite's Brisbane warehouse by regional partner FoodAssist Toowoomba continued to arrive twice a week at the FoodAssist site. SecondBite brought the Carbal and FoodAssist teams together to discuss a food access partnership through which Carbal could continue to access SecondBite donations directly from the FoodAssist site. The surplus food which Toowoomba FoodAssist collects via SecondBite each week has enabled Carbal Medical Services to continue to offer fresh, nutritious fruit, vegies, bread, dairy and long-life products to members of their community who are doing it tough. The Carbal-FoodAssist partnership is just another example of the ways in which the goodwill and hard work of our charity partners expands the reach of SecondBite donations deeper into our Australian communities.
