24.01.2022 He has expensive tastes. Always digs for the avocado first!

24.01.2022 Parked. Skye's found a nice spot, half sun, half shade. It's a tough life

24.01.2022 Skye has finally learnt from her sister that hop time is fun time! Zooooom!

24.01.2022 Thanks to Wildlife Victoria 's Carer Grant we were able to purchase these two amazing cages. We were also able to purchase a couple of hand nets, extra feed bowls and a lot of milk formula (still to come). Thanks WV!!!

23.01.2022 AN UPDATE AND A THANK YOU There is so much happening right now and the suffering that is happening is on such a grand scale it is hard to imagine. It is importa...nt in times like this to focus on the little wins that you have. To focus on things like: The little paw that is less blistered today than it was yesterday The mum wrapped up in bandages that has started to eat fresh Lucerne The teenage girl, feet all wrapped up and so confused, who looks at you with more trust today then she did yesterday The 8kg boy who is up and about and snuggled in and has been accepted by his new mob. Thank you to everyone our there who have donated supplies to help us deliver the care they need. To the vets, shelters, individuals and organisations alike. Thank you to the rescuers out on the ground and to those transporting and to those sourcing supplies. Thank you to Dr Alistair, Manfred Five Freedoms Animal Rescue , Stella Reid (Wildhaven - www.wildhavenstandrews.com.au ), JABS Joey and Bat Sanctuary , Second Chance Wildlife , Rescue Rehabilitate Release , Jane Cee, Warriors 4 Wildlife , and Victoria Wildlife & Animal Rescue Support . Thank you to all of you following us and what we are doing. Thank you for the words of support, your monetary donations and for taking this very soul searching journey with us. Thank you for your ongoing support. (Sharon)

22.01.2022 Massive thank you to Libby's Koala & Wildlife Crusade Inc. for this incredibly unexpected gift at the door. All wildlife carers are so thankful for all the great work you do to make it easier for us to continue to focus on the animals we have in care .

21.01.2022 Playing in the bin. We responded to a rescue request from Wildlife Rescuers 0417 506 941 to assist with an Owl in a bin. On the way, we were debating: boobook or tawny? We both guessed Tawny - they tend to get themselves in funny situations.... And yes, we were right - tawny frogmouth in the recycling bin. He must've lost his way after the bins had been collected one morning and the homeowner didn't notice him for a couple days. An initial observation: he seemed fine, except for some icky bin juice on his tail feathers. Cleaned that up and gave him some time to relax in our aviary for a couple days. We observed he was flying well, eating well and good to go! We met the homeowners at the top of their driveway and successfully watched him fly back to his favourite tree.

21.01.2022 I'm confused... Which way is up?

21.01.2022 A huge THANK YOU to Travis for kindly supporting rescues through our Support A Rescue programme. Your contribution makes it easier for us to focus on what we do, and not have to worry about the financial burden. If you'd like to help us out - head to our website: https://secondchance.melbourne/support-us

21.01.2022 Once again another bat in netting. Was taken to a vet to be gassed down to cut the netting off as it was so tight around the wings and body. Thank you to JABS Joey and Bat Sanctuary for taking him on for the moment. Please if you use this netting get rid of it!! You can buy wildlife safe netting from Bunnings! Sure it costs a little more but not only will it save your fruit but it will also save wildlife as well.... If you would like to help support us so we can continue to rescue and care for animals please head to our website: https://secondchance.melbourne/support-us

20.01.2022 Tatum loves his burrow from Libby's Koala & Wildlife Crusade Inc. . He'll climb out when he's ready and wander around the house. Sometimes he gets a little lost, so we just need to walk him over to the crate and he'll climb (he actually jumps!) back in!

18.01.2022 One of our foster carers Maddi released her first ringtail possums today: When Monty and Mavericks first came into care they were both only 100gms and Pippa was 63gms. Being my first possums in care, watching them grow and go on to be released has been very special and rewarding time. With them being the cheeky little explores they are, it was only right that they would go straight to exploring their new environment that they now will call home

18.01.2022 SCARED ON THE GROUND We got a call to help this little brushy who had been on the ground all night in a backyard in Mernda. We asked the caller to place a washing basket over him just so it doesn't get away. When we got to the house, the caller had said the brushy had moved when they tried to place the basket over, and he noticed the possum hobbling. We quickly contained the possum to get a check over. Unable to find any reason for hobbling, we placed him in a cage for obser...vation and hydration. Running low on cages (13 animals in care stretches one's supply of containment), we used a large dog crate - so that he had room to move, but not high that if he does struggle he won't fall far. Well.... Let's just say, we later found out he is an excellent climber. He was able to push his way out between the bars of the dog crate and climb to the top of the larger cages in our animal room. He was released this evening, back to a park right next to where he was found. He climbed up high in the chosen tree, found a nice dense leafy area, and curled up to rest. Good luck buddy! Why was he hobbling? We can only guess, perhaps he had a bit of a rough time in the intense weather at the end of last week: extreme heat followed by flooding rains aren't good for a young inexperienced brushy. -------- Caring for wildlife is entirely self funded, and from kind donations, help us out by paying for the consumables we need: https://secondchance.melbourne/support-us

16.01.2022 The pitter patter of tiny claws. Little Tatum is doing really well.

15.01.2022 The stack of feed bowls to be cleaned and replenished daily. Four cages of possums need water, fruit and veg, and three of them get milk formula too. In addition to fresh native plants to munch on every day.

15.01.2022 Working from home certainly has its perks - look who decided to pop down for a midday snack behind my desk. (Jayson)

15.01.2022 Graduation Day comes so quick! Just like that out little girls have graduated. Only three months this time since they came to us quite big already. By now they've been wanting more hop time, getting up and zooming around the yard, so they need more space to grow into!... Thanks as always to Emerald Monbulk Wildlife Shelter for taking Zoe and Skye, we know they're in good hands and have amazing facilities to become big strong roos.

15.01.2022 Our beautiful Nankeen Kestrel from a couple nights ago was released today. After spending a night under close observation she was moved to the outside aviary to check out her flight ability and eating for another night. When we got back to her home, we found her mate flying about too!

14.01.2022 Always great to have a successful release. This guy was entangled in fruit netting a week ago. He was a little sore in one of his feet and not keen to go anywhere. After a few days inside, he started using his sore leg and moved outside. A couple more days outside and he was flying around keen to get going.... Good luck back with your friends Mr Batty! Video courtesy Natasha.

14.01.2022 One of our two lil sugar gliders

13.01.2022 Our five little batties graduated last night. They've moved to another carer to start learning to socialise with more batties. Since they're a colony species they need to get along with hundreds and thousands of neighbours in the wild. Lou has integrated our five with another group she had an a couple of adults. Our five had a great first night patrolling the aviary and making their presence known. Lou said this morning she saw them hanging out the the adults. Our big kids will be alright!

12.01.2022 Yummy fresh watermelon . Nom Nom Nom. Fruit for the bats gets expensive. They'll eat around 1.5kg per night. If you want to help us out, consider helping us purchase fruit: https://secondchance.melbourne/product-catego/payitforward/

12.01.2022 Looks who's up for an early dinner tonight.

12.01.2022 Our possum family: Three brushtails, two ringtails. We also have a sugar glider, but it's rather camera shy.

11.01.2022 While we , and other pages, often post about kangaroos needing our help, there are many other animals we attend to regularly. Just tonight we attended to a flying fox that found itself caught on barbed wire, a kestrel found at a warehouse and finished the ride home with a kangaroo pouch check. The poor flying fox was put to sleep, its wing was badly torn from the barbed wire and she had destroyed the inside of her mouth trying to bite her way out of the wire. The Kestrel was bought home to be monitored as it cant seem to fly and no vets available to X-ray it tonight to check for a broken wing. The kangaroo pouch check was a male and being on the side of a busy road he was moved off to the nearby bushes. A big thank you to rescuer Natasha for joining me and helping with these rescues.

11.01.2022 Someone's a little exhausted after an afternoon hop..

11.01.2022 Meet little Vincent! As you can see something isnt quite right about him hence the name Vincent. He has been checked by a vet and we are going to see how he goes with time. Fingers crossed. If you would like to help support us so we can continue to rescue and care for animals please head to our website:... https://secondchance.melbourne/support-us See more

10.01.2022 The key to a shelter operator's heart is an unexpected gift at an unexpected time. Thanks again to Libby from Libby's Koala & Wildlife Crusade Inc. for the fantastic surprise gift at our door today. Very much appreciated as always. A new little "burrow" for Tatum.

10.01.2022 A huge thank you to Victoria Wildlife & Animal Rescue Support for the incredibly generous donation of apples for our batties and kangaroo milk feed. Thanks for your ongoing support.

09.01.2022 Besides little Tatum (the wombat joey), we've been a bit if a bird sanctuary lately. Over the last couple weeks we've had a few birds in temporary care: Cockatoo rescued by Tash and Deb, was found along a concrete barrier on the road. With no obvious injuries, but unwilling to fly we observed for a couple days. It was eating fine and able to climb up and down to the perch, just didn't want to fly. A specialist bird vet agreed to have a look and immediately observed early stag...es of beak and feather disease, which meant unfortunately it had to be put to sleep. The long billed corella was found in the ground, rescued by Tash. Stayed overnight with us then went to another carer. The barn owl was found on the ground, rescued by Maddi. After some time under observation, was successfully released again the next night. Finally the red rumped parrot, also rescued by Maddi. Had signs of trauma, swelling around one eye and one wing not even. It didn't make it through the night.

08.01.2022 Tawnies pull the funniest faces! Story on this guy in the next day or so.

08.01.2022 A week later and little Tatum is doing really well. When I collected him he was freezing cold and almost lifeless! I wasnt sure if he was going to make it through the night but he pulled through and now his little cheeky personality is starting to make an appearance. Only time will tell how much of a terror he will become the cats better watch out lol.... If you would like to help support us so we can continue to rescue and care for animals please head to our website: https://secondchance.melbourne/support-us

07.01.2022 GRADUATION DAY Today Luca and Gulliver graduated. A bittersweet moment, as it always is - but if you'd seen how fast they scoot around our yard, they are definitely in need of more space. Thanks again to Emerald Monbulk Wildlife Shelter for taking our little boys to grow to big roos. We know they'll be well looked after there and they will have so much fun.

07.01.2022 PIKACHU HAS A HOME Little Pikachu had been with us since August. He was found all alone on the ground in Mill Park with no sign of mum. He was weak and malnourished. After 6 months he's big and strong. We wanted to find a safe, secure forever home for him. ... Carol at Emerald Monbulk Wildlife Shelter was happy to provide the safety he'll need. Good luck, Pikachu!

06.01.2022 Snack time! Yummy oats, roo pellets and oaten hay for a morning snack after hoping around the yard and fighting with each other. If you would like to help support us so we can continue to rescue and care for animals please head to our website: https://secondchance.melbourne/support-us

06.01.2022 Christmas is fast approaching! You need Christmas Cards!! Proceeds from sales of greetings cards help us to fund our ongoing costs of caring for our animal family. https://secondchance.melbourne/product-cat//greetingcards/

04.01.2022 MORE SPACE! Thanks so much to Wildlife Victoria for helping us to extend our enclosure. Our batties in care now have 5.5m to stretch out! We've also configured it to be seperated if we need two enclosures. Massive thanks too to Jake for helping put it together. I'd probably be yelling at it still now. ... We've still got to put the waterproof cover over a section - likely down the back section, and the shade cloth over the new section. And fit it out with some perches etc for when we get birds in. (Jayson)

04.01.2022 How's your Friday night?

02.01.2022 Happy Mother's Day. Thank you for keeping us safe, warm and well fed!

01.01.2022 Our little overnight guest. This little girl was found all by herself in a back paddock with no sign of mum anywhere. She's done well overnight, drank her bottles and keeping warm. Off to another carer who can support such young ones.

01.01.2022 Our gorgeous girls Zoe and Skye. Skye came to us a couple weeks ago. She had lost her mum. Zoe joined us from JABS Joey and Bat Sanctuary to be Skye's friend.
