21.01.2022 Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is a type of dizziness described as a ‘spinning’ sensation in the head. People with BPPV feel as though they are turning around when they are standing still and can even feel as though they are going to fall over. BPPV occurs when there is a disturbance to the otoliths in the inner ear’s balance system which are small crystals that can become dislodged and cause symptoms of vertigo. The condition is more common in people over th...e age of 40, and in women. Common signs and symptoms of BPPV include; nausea, light headedness, dizziness and unsteadiness. These symptoms are usually brought on by a sudden change in position such as getting out of bed, rolling over in bed and standing up from a chair. Symptoms frequently come on suddenly but resolve within a minute if you remain completely still and are often worse in the morning. Diagnosis of BPPV is based on a medical history as well as a physical examination. A physiotherapist uses a diagnostic test to look for nystagmus which is described as a jumping of the eyes. This test is called the Dix-Hallpike test and is performed at Peak MSK physiotherapy. Fortunately, BPPV is very treatable through simple exercises and manual therapies provided by your physiotherapist. BPPV can subside with time, but it is important to seek treatment in the early stages to prevent falls or injury. If you have any concerns regarding BPPV, call SecondOpinon.Physio on 9533 5305 to book an appointment with one of our Physiotherapists.

14.01.2022 What's up for your weekend? Last weekend I had to shift a massive pot with a prized lime tree 15 metres. I used a surf strap around my waist and then around the pot (no back work) and slid the pot along slats of loose wood. Job done. The take home? Plan, pace and use things to help gardening and home jobs easier. Think of kneeling pads, boxes with good handles, gardening tools that reduce the work. Take breaks, enjoy the serenity, structure what is reasonable to do in one d...ay. Sure a clever idea like this is good too, but the simple things count in maintaining the yard without hurting yourself. If you need help and advice to get moving and get out of pain give us a call on 03 9533 5305. We will be happy to help you out of pain......Second Opinion gardening advice as well! Have a great weekend.

07.01.2022 Concussion is predictable and preventable. Find out what we all can do from the sidelines.

07.01.2022 Concussion is a traumatic brain injury from either a blow to the head or body. It can even be a trivial contact that causes a concussion. The symptoms may occur at the time of the blow but can occur over the next few hours or even days. You will be able to access the Concussion Recognition Tool from here on our resources page http://www.secondopinion.physio/resources.html It is freely available for Coaches, Parents and Teachers to use on the sidelines. It will guide you on wha...t symptoms and signs to look out for and whether urgent medical attention is needed. SIT OUT ALL PLAYERS SUSPECTED OF CONCUSSION, EVEN IF YOU ARE UNSURE. #ifindoubtsitthemout The signs and symptoms of concussion may not be obvious but can include symptoms like: headache, sleepiness, fogginess, irritability or changed mood, nausea including vomiting, sensitivity to light and sound, sleepiness and concentration difficulties. Both adults and children are at risk, so parents, teachers, coaches and teammates need know what to look for. Be aware of delayed responses to concussion injury, especially as a parent or teacher. Kids won’t always be aware of symptoms or understand why they feel the way they do, so talking to them can help. If you have concerns regarding someone you know, adult, teen or child about concussion, ring SecondOpinion.Physio on 9533 5305 to book an appointment with our Specialist Physiotherapist.
