16.01.2022 HEAT VS COLD I have been asked numerous times should I use ice or should I use heat? for musculoskeletal injuries. The answer is easy when we consider what happens at the time of an injury. Is the injury likely to cause bleeding or swelling? Consider the type of tissue where the injury has occurred. Muscles and tendon will generally bleed more than ligaments. A direct blow or strain to a muscle will cause small blood vessels to burst and blood will fill the surrounding ...area until the body is able to clot the area. Ice when applied to the area will cause the blood vessels to contract and when applied with gentle compression the bleeding (inflammation) is reduced. Ice will also reduce nerve conduction and hence reduce pain. Remember R.I.C.E (Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation) Injuries that are more chronic (greater than 24-hours) require an increase in blood flow to enable fresh blood to the area to promote healing. If it feels hot to touch apply ice if no additional heat is felt apply heat. Areas of stiffness apply heat. The area will become supple and allow better movement. Apply heat for 20 minutes and be careful not to burn the area. Lower back pain responds better with heat and improves mobility and we know the more you move the quicker lower back pain patients recover. See more

12.01.2022 Secret Harbour Physiotherapy is pleased to announce that the latest technology for the treatment of musculoskeletal disease has arrived. The most commonly treated conditions that response well are - Supraspinatus Tendinitis - Calcific Supraspinatus Tendinitis - Trochanter Pain Syndrome - Tibial Stress Syndrome... - Jumpers Knee / Patellar Tendinitis - Tennis Elbow - Golf Elbow - Plantar Fasciitis - Achilles Tendinitis Extracorporeal acoustic wave therapy (Shockwave Therapy) is designed to cause microscopic interstitial and extracellular biological effects which include tissue regeneration. Application of shockwaves leads to significantly increase growth factors leading to better long term healing. Newly formed blood vessels improve blood supply and oxygenation which leads to faster healing. Acoustic waves also cause mast cell activation which supports chronic inflammation reversal. Other effects include stimulation of collagen production, calcified fibroblasts dissolution and dispersion of pain mediator substance P Shockwave therapy is best done over 3- 5 sessions spaced a week apart. The therapy itself can be a little uncomfortable (but not always). It is important to include the correct exercises and follow the treatment plan carefully. Following the prescribed number of treatments healing will continue for the next 3 months until the full effect of the therapy is completed Secret Harbour physiotherapy does not charge extra for the use of Shockwave therapy and it is included in the normal 30 minute consult. If you have any questions whether Shockwave therapy is suitable for you please contact Piers at Secret Harbour Physiotherapy on 95248400.
