13.01.2022 The following caption accompanies a double page photo which appears on pp. 96-97 of our latest book Secrets of the Sambar - The Hunt Smart System. This photo is one of a sequence which includes the video clip posted below, of this hind and calf as they ascended this face, then walked the spurline. A wide angle photo which includes this spurline and the gully head appears on pp. 186-187 where their position is marked with silhouettes. May 25th 2017. 6.30am first light, clea...r sky. Temp. at OP at 7.30am was 3.5C. After glassing for two hours from a cold south face, at 9am I ascended thirty metres to the saddle so I could stand in the sun and warm up. Within minutes, a breeze grabbed my scent and carried it into the gully head and across to the opposite face 500m away. 9.06am. A minute later - this hind who I hadn’t seen - contoured across the face to her calf which was bedded under a large white box. Intense body language spoke of danger. She "instructed" her calf to follow her up that north face where they walked this spurline for just thirty seconds before disappearing. The lesson for me couldn’t have been clearer don’t stand on spurlines. The silver lining was the great photo and video I was able to capture. I photographed this hind in this gully on May 7th when she was heavily pregnant, so her calf could not be older than about 18 days. Remember Knowledge is the Real Trophy. This photo is one of a sequence which includes the video clip posted below which captures a young stag caressing a hind whilst her 8 week old (approx.) calf lay just a metre away. June 10th 2017, 10.29am. I began photographing this hind and calf at 7.15am - just after first light. They remained bedded except for three minutes ...when at 10.26 the hind moved and stood in cover ten metres in front of her calf, then returned to her bed. At 10.29am - the moment she lay down - this young stag emerged from cover and began licking her. He licked her all over for eight minutes, then moved 15m up the face to a large eucalypt and stood beside it. At 10.45 the hind was disturbed by my camera's shutter. She stood and was "out of there" in a blink with the calf and stag following.
