14.01.2022 As South Australia enters 6 days of 'Hard Lockdown' to address the latest COVID 19 outbreak, here are some tips for supporting children and young people through these challenging times: 1. Ensure they get enough good quality sleep. We recommend playing relaxing classical music in their sleeping environment. This helps deepen their sleep so they are better-rested to face the day ahead. We also recommend the Dream Children compilation by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. Search ...for Ron Spiegelman and Dream Children on Spotify, iTunes or the Google Play Store. Play it all night in or near to your child or young person's sleeping environment. You might also use a generic sleep music playlist on Spotify, or a sleep music app on your smart device. 2. Maintain routines. Routines that can be maintained through the lockdown offer a calming sense of 'felt normality'. 3. Check in with the children and young people in your care proactively. Checking in without them doing anything to get your attention offers a powerful experience that you are accessible to them. 4. Anticipate some of their requests and address them proactively where you normally would if they asked. Addressing needs and reasonable wishes proactively offers powerful reassurance for your child or young person that you can be depended upon during these challenging times. 5. If you find yourself about to ask your child or young person a question about their thoughts and feelings and you think you know the answer should they respond, don't ask the question. say the answer. Communicating understanding (also referred to as validation) is profoundly reassurance and offers a buffer against stress during these challenging times. 6. Do an activity with the child or young person in your care. During activities you tend to become emotionally connected to each other. As you regulate to calm they will follow. Emotional connection, as with all forms of relational connection, is profoundly reassuring to children and young people. 7. Offer the child or young person in your care a smoothie or something else they can suck on (eg an iceblock). Provide straws with drinks they would normally have with open cups. Sucking offers a profound experience of soothing that stems from our experiences during the first minutes and hours of life. 05.01.2022 Children and young people who have experienced a tough start to life benefit from a consistent approach to therapeutic, reparative care across the home and education settings. With the Triple-A Model of Therapeutic Care having been delivered across the TUSLA fostering service in Donegal, Ireland over the past five years, I am very pleased to share that my complementary package for implementing trauma responsive practice in schools will now be delivered in Donegal. I am also v...ery pleased to have a dedicated team of local trainers in Donegal, trained by me, who continue to enthusiastically deliver accessible information and strategies in support of the recovery of children and young people who have experienced a tough start to life. I will soon be sharing information about how this package might be accessed and delivered in other jurisdictions. #traumainformed #traumainformedschool #traumaresponsive
