21.01.2022 Footage from the front seat of an ambulance rushing through the Grand Parade, Brighton-Le-Sands heading towards the city, circa 1982. A bit grainy, but you get ...the idea. Features all the old cars you expect, the centre of Brighton before the Novotel was built and the older, shorter Airport Tunnel before the third runway and the M5 East, and the spinning radar tower off the northern side of General Holmes Drive. From a NSW Ambulance "Billy Be Safe" video (I believe this must have been a looped tape played in the background at exhibitions), uploaded by Sam Choy on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrlpbRyFRmU&t=1555s

17.01.2022 Do you know the difference between a Total Fire Ban and the Fire Danger Period? There are different restrictions that apply in the open air on days of Total Fire Ban and during the Fire Danger Period. Understand the difference between the two to avoid penalties.... Total Fire Ban (TFB) Total Fire Bans are declared by CFA on days when fires are likely to spread rapidly and be difficult to control. Fire Danger Period (FDP) CFA declares Fire Danger Periods by municipalities in the country area of Victoria during periods of increased fire risk. www.cfa.vic.gov.au/warnings-restrictions/can

15.01.2022 The Sedgwick brigade along with Harcourt and police attended a Motor Vehicle Accident this afternoon. It was a Car versus tree, the impact causing the car to catch fire and quickly spread into the grassland. Thanks to the quick response of both brigades the fire was quickly brought under control and the driver escaped with minor injuries. Great job to all services involved!

14.01.2022 We have a few haunted house tips to have your property looking spootakular and most importantly safe this bushfire season... Remove flammable items from nea...r your home like coffins, crucifixes and broomsticks. Clear away overhanging branches and cobwebs. Keep your lawn mowed but watch out for zombies in the long grass. Seal up your windows to keep away the bats. Trim back shrubs, you never know what gremlins could be hiding in there! Never leave your jack-o-lantern candle unattended. And remember to always check restrictions before lighting your cauldron this summer.

11.01.2022 Great that we have a Captain and 1st Lieutenant who are film stars...

10.01.2022 National Volunteer Week is an opportunity to say a very BIG THANK YOU to all volunteers who give their time to helping their communities when we need them most.... The 2019/20 fire season brought incredible challenges, which we couldn’t have faced without the critical role of CFA volunteers. CFA volunteers are our friends and family and take on many roles to fulfil our mission of protecting life and property. Thank you, not only this week but the 365 days of the year you are there for each and every one of us!

10.01.2022 A message from D02 Assistant Chief Fire Officer - Bill Johnstone. This morning at 0800hrs Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) came into existence, and at that time CFA a...nd MFB staff at fire stations, district offices and training grounds across the state began their first day either with FRV; or a new 100% Volunteer CFA. It is a day where many of us will feel mixed emotions. Some of us will feel anger, grief and a sense of loss for what was once great. Others may feel relief and give thanks that finally the day of change has arrived. For me personally I’m probably leaning more towards the grief and loss, and yet I cannot help but think philosophically about what our future holds. Change is never easy, and I think that it would be fair to say that this particular change has been very, very difficult. But I am determined that I will not let my personal sense of loss define me. As day to day there are a myriad of things that depend on me to faithfully execute my duties as best I can. Protecting Victorians, their lives and property, from fire and other emergencies and I do that through you. Our dedicated Volunteers and Staff, responding to incidents today and into the future, just like you did yesterday, and for the days, weeks months and years before that. Perhaps I see this a little too simplistically for some of you but I reckon after more than 30 years my observations count for something. So I keep asking myself what about our communities? Many of whom for the most part live in our towns and cities, and to them the fire brigade is just that. The fire brigade is who always comes when called on. The fire brigade is who almost always never fails. The fire brigade whose brave men and women ride in those shiny red trucks and defend our communities in the face of summer’s worst bushfires, , that burning house fire on a freezing cold winters night or from that foul chemical spill. It is the fire brigade that goes to our schools and teaches our kids about fires that are good, and those that are bad. It is the fire brigade that rattles tins on Good Friday for the Royal Children’s Hospital, or sells you a raffle tickets in the pub on a Friday night, or changes your nannas’ smoke alarm battery. And so we are a little fragmented, frustrated and perhaps even angry, and whilst none of us can control our emotional response; each and every one of us can control our mood. When I reflect on the year that 2020 has been it puts a lot of things into context, we are about to enter into another new period of social restrictions. Which for me at least gives me reason to be thankful; thankful that I am more fortunate than many, thankful that I have support and thankful that I can be safe in the knowledge that our fire brigades are standing watch over 5 million Victorians. Change is never easy and I am not going to tell you any different. You might hear from the extremists, the angry and the outraged. But you might be able to exercise your own free will and curiosity about what the future holds. I don’t have that answer, no one does. But now is a time for leadership, and tolerance, not anger and despair. They say time heals, and it does. The question I put to you is how long do you want to hurt? The greater the hurt, the longer the healing and I think that the communities we serve, regardless of our uniform badge or banner expect and deserve so much better. So unite as fire brigades, for a common goal, a better future and a safer Victoria look after yourself and your mates, uphold those knightly virtues of the fire services star that that we place so much importance on and be the best firefighter you can be, and I’ll do my best so that we can all be our best. Thank you, Bill Johnstone Assistant Chief Fire Officer District 02
