25.01.2022 Parliament of Youth on Sustainability will run in 2021 What is it? Parliament of Youth on Sustainability is a 1 day mock-parliament event where hundreds of Kindergarten - Year 12 students from different schools in regional ACT come together and, in front of ACT Ministers, pitch, debate and vote on their ideas about how Canberra can thrive more sustainably. The theme for the 2021 program is What is one action we can take to thrive on Ngunnawal Country?... To find out more information and/or register for a Teacher Information Session & Workshop in early November, follow the link www.see-change.org.au/parliament-of-youth

25.01.2022 "More needs to be done if Canberra is going to seriously get off gas because right now these incentives are insufficient to get there" While many Canberrans are ditching gas to push back against climate change, this isn't possible for low income households who are unable to afford the upfront costs of switching to electricity. We need household and industry incentives and support to ensure everyone is able to make the transition to net zero emissions

23.01.2022 Understand your local wetlands Last weekend some of our members got to learn about the wetlands in Melba and the raingarden in Florey on a guided walk with the Ginninderra Catchment Group. There is a lot of thought that goes into this complicated infrastructure, and these places are critical to the success of 'rewilding' parts of our urban landscape. Join the next walk at the Croke place wetlands this weekend and you may just come away with a whole new level of appreciation ...for these important biodiversity drivers. https://www.facebook.com/events/230478385061290

21.01.2022 #resolutions2021 Has 2020 allowed you to look around and get to know your local area a bit better? We're pretty lucky to be surrounded by some amazing biodiversity, from colourful parrots, amazing lizards, fascinating insect life, wildflowers and more. Developing an appreciation for our local flora and fauna makes us want to protect it even more. It's not all cuddly koalas, but it is all connected.... What's your favourite local plant/animal that speaks to you of our region? (I have a fondness for the hop bushes, Dodonaea) #biodiversity #indepthknowledge #learning #local

15.01.2022 This video (see link below) featuring Paul Hawken from Project Drawdown is truly inspirational. Project Drawdown investigate different actions and strategies to reverse climate change, delving into the actual evidence of impact (both directly on emissions and costs etc). The solutions are then ranked according to impact. But as Paul Hawken states in this video, no solution is too small, they are all interrelated and we should all being choosing actions based on what resonates... with us as individuals. 12.01.2022 New fast charging option in Cooma! Who has taken their EV to the hills this summer? Now we just need some EV rental/share car options too.

12.01.2022 #resolutions2021 Consumerism! We admit, it can be fun (especially at Christmas time, with the joy of giving) but it's also responsible for an awful lot of damage to our environment. At least these days we're spoilt for choice and it's easier to find products that are lighter on the planet. They might be a little heavier on the wallet but those extra few dollars make up for themselves with a dose of smugness in return.... What's you're favourite eco-friendly item that improves your life as well as leading to an overall reduced ecological footprint? Bonus points for recycled content or fair trade products or from B corps. #consiousconsumerism #pushforbetter #actwithyourwallet #qualityoverquantity #fairtrade #ethical #workersrights #livingwage

10.01.2022 September is Biodiversity Month! To promote backyard biodiversity, we are creating a video tour of a diverse garden that attracts a huge range of insects, birds and other critters. But our backyards can only do so much. The following message is from members of the SEE-Change Gungahlin group, who are urging our community to stand up and protect essential ecosystems: "As more and more of our native animals lose their homes due to urban development and fires, See-changers ...have responded by designing their gardens with re-wilding in mind. While the changes we have made in our backyards to provide animal habitat does greatly enhance their chances of survival, sadly our efforts to provide a safe haven for our native animals will be undermined significantly if our Government's promise to get rid of green tape is fulfilled. In response to lobbying from Industry groups the present government is seeking to weaken our national environment laws. Every 10 years, our environment laws are assessed, and can be modified. The current environmental act is called the EPBC (Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act). It is this act that the Government wants to use to strip back the little protection it currently provides. The Samuel’s report on the EPBC (commissioned by the Government) recommends that national environment standards, essential to genuine protection of the environment be adopted, and that a well-funded EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) be created. The Government has disregarded this advice and instead will prioritise its commitment to devolve environment law making to the states. This would allow state Governments to approve developments without considering the national repercussions, or the impact on species survival. This is clearly unacceptable. We cannot allow industry lobbying groups to determine the fate of our fellow creatures. We need to have our say. The vote to accept the Governments new proposal has passed the House and the vote in the Senate will take place when the Parliament returns Oct 6, so urgent action is needed. You can email a simple message that you support an EPA and National Environmental Standards: - Minister of the Environment Sussan Ley (sussanley.com/contact-2/) - Prime Minister Scott Morrison (www.pm.gov.au/contact-your-pm) - Labor Leader Antony Albanese (anthonyalbanese.com.au/contact) - Shadow Environment Minister Terri Butler (www.terributlermp.com/contact/)"

10.01.2022 #resolutions2021 How did we all go with food waste this Christmas? This can be a tough one, especially when there is uncertainty around travel plans etc! At least we don't need to feel (too) guilty if you are in proximity to a compost heap. That way we can at least recover the nutrients, if not the energy that has gone into growing, transporting and selling the food.... Do you check ShareWaste when on holiday? Or use community composting services? Or maybe you're a whiz at preserving or cooking with scraps? How do you ensure that no food waste goes to landfill? #compost #cleanbins #savingcarbon #deliciousfood #eatitall

09.01.2022 We're helping to electrify Canberra's transport options. It's exciting to have an affordable option. The Nissan Leafs in the bulk buy program are like a bit of everyday luxury that's good for your carbon footprint. We appreciate the efforts that Good Car Co go to in their mission to share the joy of electric cars with as many people as possible. We ask that participants in the EV Bulk Buy complete their own research to assess suitability and value for money with these particu...lar cars. https://canberraweekly.com.au/hundreds-of-canberrans-keen-/

08.01.2022 Here’s another tip for riding in the rain: Be visible. Keep a high-vis vest or clothes with reflectors in your pannier or basket. We’re loving Hey Reflecto’s range of water resistant high-vis vests, bag covers and (best of all!) doggo vests. They’re handmade in Australia out of recycled plastic bottles and are shipped in compostable bags Pic source: https://heyreflecto.com/

07.01.2022 "I'd really like to see every garden out the back of their house actually have a garden of Indigenous food, mixed with other food too" Native Australian plants are tasty, versatile, and brimming with history. Juru and Kanaka man Gerald Power is bringing cultural food traditions to a new generation, by educating community on edible native plants and traditional Indigenous dishes, and supporting local schools to grow and enjoy their own foods.

06.01.2022 Calling for "no public funds for gas and other damaging fossil fuel projects" The federal government needs to be investing in a safe, clean, just future for all.

06.01.2022 "We want land rights and protection of country so that Indigenous mob can say 'no, it's not okay for you to take this country from us'," said Will Potter, a Gunggari man from the Blue Mountains in NSW. As we continue to demand a renewable-led recovery, we must stand in solidarity with First Nations people in their fight for land rights and Indigenous-led protection of Country.

04.01.2022 #resolutions2021 How are your forays into community going? Have you found a group that invigorates you, inspires you or just reminds you that there are lovely people 'out there'? After 2020 we need community more than ever.... Maybe you've gone along to some community events in the past and not sure if you've gelled with other attendees. All of our local SEE-Change groups are led by different volunteers with different interests. Although these groups are geographically based you are more than welcome to attend multiple groups to explore projects and initiatives that you might want to get involved with. Remember that you can also find the Canberra Sustainability map on our website where you can explore a multitude of groups operating in the conservation and sustainability space in our city. Should be something for everyone :) #community #supportingeachother #supportingourplanet #learning #newhorizons
