25.01.2022 Fine motor skills challenges can make everyday activities such as writing, drawing, using scissors or cutlery and getting dressed very difficult. Motor control in small muscles in the hands is necessary for daily activities. There are lots of fun ways that we can build and develop these skills, such as chalk drawing, play doh, finger paint, and stringing beads. For example, if we wanted to develop fine motor skills around using pencils or crayons, we could start with simple s...kills such as drawing lines, crosses and circles and build towards more complex shapes like letters or numbers. Development of fine motor skills are important foundational skills to help to build your child’s school readiness. . . . . . . . #seechangetherapywarabrook #finemotorskills #finemotoractivity #finemotorplay #earlyyears #schoolreadiness #learning #skills #earlychildhood #drawing #therapists See more
24.01.2022 Even seemingly simple tasks like washing hands or getting dressed for school require a series of more complex steps that need to be completed in the right order. For some children, it can be challenging to break down and remember these steps. Visual supports can be a great way to break down a long task into smaller and simpler tasks, to help your child learn and reduce frustration.
20.01.2022 Incorporating physical activity and ball games into therapy or daily routines at home set children up for a lifetime of success and enhanced self-esteem. Playing outside creates confidence, concentration and fundamental development of balance, coordination, body awareness and self-regulation skills.
20.01.2022 What is positive behaviour support? Positive Behaviour Support is an evidence-based practice centred on the understanding that challenging behaviour serves to communicate important information about a person’s stress, distress and skill development. Positive Behaviour Support reduces challenging behaviour by rewarding helpful behaviours to strengthen and increase the individual’s appropriate and functional behaviour. It uses strategies to try and prevent challenging behavio...ur from occurring in the first place rather than just reacting to challenging behaviour as it occurs. Here at SeeChange Therapy we use Positive Behaviour Support to manage challenging behaviour as well as to teach appropriate skills to replace challenging behaviour. For more information on Positive Behaviour Support please contact us at https://www.seechangetherapy.org/
19.01.2022 What is the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) therapy? ESDM is an evidence-based intensive behavioural therapy for children with developmental delays or autism between the ages of 12-48 months. ESDM is a play-based intervention in which therapists use the child’s interests to teach new skills. The aim of ESDM therapy is to use knowledge of child development and infant-toddler learning to accelerate children’s learning across all areas of development. Some key features of ESDM include language and communication skills, joint activities between children, peers and adults, use of interpersonal dynamics and naturalistic teaching strategies. Here at SeeChange Therapy, we have a large team of ESDM Therapists. To learn more about ESDM therapy or to secure a spot for your child in the new year please contact us at www.seechnagetherapy.org

13.01.2022 Bubbles are a great activity that many children find exciting and offer lots of opportunity for learning. Children can learn turn taking when blowing bubbles, imitating actions such as blow, pop and stomp or request by making eye contact, reaching or vocalising. Following bubbles also supports visual tracking and gross motor skills, body awareness and coordination. Incorporating bubbles into songs and dance also builds on sensory social routines that support social engagement... and attention. . . . . . #seechangetherapy #seechangetherapywarabrook #therapynewcastle #aba #abatherapy #therapistsofinstagram #bubbles #fun #children #learn #grow #skills See more
09.01.2022 We've been doing some training at SeeChange Therapy in the SCERTs Model. It's been useful to consider what level our kids are at in regards to being communication partners & what supports are most appropriate to use. It's a great framework providing a curriculum to scaffold emotional regulation strategies, so we can ensure our kids are ready for learning! Check out Amy's Blog post if you're interested in learning more about SCERTs & emotional regulation. . . . #Scerts #childd...evelopment #Newcastlekids #coregulation #emotionaldevelopment #playandlearn #autismeducation #understandingautism #functional https://www.medbridgeeducation.com//scerts-emotional-reg/
08.01.2022 This November, a small group of brave, determined and dedicated local, Newcastle men are completing The Man-Made Ultra Challenge to raise awareness of men’s mental health. Starting November 20th, these courageous men will be taking on the mammoth challenge of completing an ultra-distance triathlon, swimming 10k, cycling 420k and running 84k. Their aim is to raise funds for two local organisations: 1. Talk to me bro - Every $50 raised will help 2 men reduce their own or their ...mates potential to commit suicide through proactive mental health training, empowering them to live their best life and confidence to speak to their mates about mental health. 2. Junto - Every $400 raised will allow a father and son from a disadvantaged area to participate in a 10-week father/son program to transform their lives, relationship, and open up a world of possibilities for incredible bonding. SeeChange Therapy understands the significance of men’s mental health, that’s why our psychologist will be participating in parts of the Man-Made Ultra Challenge. If you’d like to join them on the adventure, you can swim anywhere from 50m to 10km, ride anywhere from 80-280kms or run anywhere from 10-84km. To register, just go here: https://www.thejuntohub.com.au/manmade They really appreciate any donations, 100% of which will be going towards the above 2 organisations. 08.01.2022 Getting down to a child’s level opens up the opportunities for communication and play. Encouraging eye contact by putting ourselves at their level helps children recognise and learn nonverbal cues, shows us that they are paying attention to us and teaches them skills for conversations and general communication. Getting down to the child’s eye-level also shows the child that we are interested in their world and helps us model appropriate social behaviour such as facial express...ions and eye contact that they may see from their peers. . . . . . . . #seechangetherapywarabrook #eyecontact #communication #play #therapists #abatherapy #grow #children #learn #learning #therapynewcastle See more
08.01.2022 Toys! Toys are a fantastic tool to encourage your child to have fun while developing their skills, but did you know you could use specific toys to target developmental domains? Having a wide variety of toys and using them to their full potential can help you bond with your child as well as encouraging fine motor skills, cognition and language development. 07.01.2022 Functions of behaviour. Every behaviour positive and negative occurs for a reason. This is known as a function. There are four functions of behaviour which include sensory, escape, access to tangibles and attention. You can remember the four functions of behaviour using the acronym SEAT. S - Sensory behaviour is anything that feels good to the individual such as squishing playdough... E - Escape behaviour is used to avoid something that individual does not want to do such as hiding to avoid packing away toys A - Attention behaviour is used to gain attention from others around them such as saying look at me T - Tangibles is used to gain access to a preferred item or activity such as a favourite toy Here at SeeChange Therapy, we use the functions of behaviour to determine what is causing a challenging behaviour to teach new appropriate replacement behaviours that still get the same needs met.
07.01.2022 Christmas time is such a magical time of the year, especially for children. There are presents to buy, trees to decorate and lights to put up. But the build-up to Christmas can sometimes bring feelings of anxiety and unscheduled chaos as well. During this season, remember to keep an eye out for body language which may be saying I'm not ok such as fidgeting, unrestfulness, adverting the eyes, and speaking in short and sharp tones. You may find spending some extra time relieving anxious thoughts or feelings will help your child enjoy Christmas time just that extra bit more.

05.01.2022 Some parents worry about getting their preschooler ready for school and often it’s school work type things like writing, counting, labelling the alphabet and corresponding sounds, and their struggles getting their child to sit still and do it. Here at SeeChange Therapy, our Paediatric Occupational Therapist has a number of hot tips for parents when it comes to getting ready for school.... you will notice it’s not schoolwork practise, as the awesome teachers will have that part covered. Also, be sure to do lots of drive-bys and looking over the fence talking about how fun it’s going to be!
