21.01.2022 Did you know that a cell is either in rest and repair (growth) or stress (protection) ? They are mutually exclusive states. It cant be in both states at the ...same time! Its in an important concept to understand. Particularly in the current climate. Its easy for us to do 'relaxing' things like take a stroll, do some yoga but continue to be stressing through out the activity.... and then beat ourselves up that we weren't more relaxed after!! When we are in a state of fear, the protection response in our body initiates the adrenal stress hormones. They then shut down the body's blood flow to the visceral organs that control growth and maintenance of the body and have a down regulation of the immune system. Blood is shifted to arms and legs making the body ready to run as it is now in fight or flight. What is really interesting is that the forebrain - where we have our conscious control - is also now receiving less blood flow. The hindbrain - where we house our rapid unconscious reflex behaviours - is now getting more blood! We have all been experiencing some new forms of stress right now. Have you noticed some repetitive behaviours? Are you easily addicted to checking the news? Facebook? You don't realise you're doing it? Perhaps you are arguing with others more easily? Are you snapping more? Or perhaps you're shutting down? This state of being may feel so foreign to you, making you even more uncomfortable. So instead of allowing those behaviours to persist and continue start to recognise them. Bring consciousness to them And then remember - when you want to rest, do so with purpose. If you mind cant stop use tools like mindfulness apps and guided meditation or simply bring your attention to your breath. Because we need BOTH our mind and body to move out of a stressed state for our system to rest and repair appropriately.

We think it’s necessary to bring some awareness to the emotional & mental wellbeing of parents in their experience of parenting during a pandemic. As @jessgrosewrites @nytparenting article voices, as parents we have never, ever had to raise our children under these circumstances, with so little support. Yet society expects us to work, to parent, to teach, to cook and clean, to show up ...every day as if this ever increasing load on parents doing this on their own is expected & normal ... it is not! Please know that we are feeling and living this every day with you and if you need some help or some time out - please speak up. It’s gone on long enough now, even the strongest ones are breaking.... please know it’s ok to crumble because this way of life and parenting is NOT normal.
