25.01.2022 More Seedling sale ... I was going to say porn. But there's something other than a tomato in the pic. That was close . It was 32 degrees in there this morning. Grateful for the change in weather this afternoon. We were contemplating moving to the Antarctic ... again. The sale is 10-11 October from 10am - 3pm. ... It's a BYO box event. 200 tomato varieties, loads of chillies and eggplants, herbs, cukes, zukes, pumpkins Etc. No prior sales. There will be limitations on how many people can be in the g/h at any given time due to Covid restrictions. So there may be a bit more waiting around required. Luckily we'll have Que Sera Sera will be there with coffee, Neil & Rachel from Surges Bay Orchard with their organic apple cider. Takeaways only due to Covid restrictions. We're an hour south of Hobart on one of the most beautiful drives in Australia. You can register your interest in our FB event page. We'll be posting the address and directions a couple of days before the event. All tomatoes are $2.50 each. Most veggies are around that with punnets at $3 and a few more advanced plants like Gotu Kola at $5. Car parking, though quite extensive, fills up fast. Carpooling is a great option. We'll also be featuring a few local eateries to help you extend your day in the Huon Valley. Some beautiful beaches not far away either. Hoping for as beautiful day as last year
25.01.2022 Septoria Leaf Spot is a common tomato fungal disease caused by Septoria lycopersici. It thrives in warm, moist conditions. It starts on the lower leaves and slowly spreads up the plant. It affects the vigor of the plant but rarely affects fruit. It over winters in soils, composts, garden implements. Other plants in the tomato family such as nightshades also carry and transmit it. But it's not so difficult to deal with. To prevent: water seedlings in the morning when the leave...s will dry quickly. Over 6 hours leaf dampness is a recipe for it. Avoid overhead watering. Difficult in a seedling tray or pot situation. But with small numbers dipping a tray of seedlings into a tray of water or diluted seaweed solution and avoiding wetting the leaves will help. Not crowding plants, allowing adequate air flow. Removing lower leaves that have contact with the soil. Treating it organically as soon as it rears it's black spotted, yellowing leaved head. With clean hands or secateurs remove the affected leaves. Changing the pH of the leaves makes for an inhospitable breeding ground. 200ml of 3% hydrogen peroxide in 8 litres of water and sprayed over and under leaves. A 1 to 9 parts milk to water solution, sprayed as above. Potassium bicarbonate 1tsp to 1litre of water will also work and the plants don't mind it either. You can use organic copper fungicides but it's nuking good fungi too. Tino Carnivale was talking about it on radio this week. It's a very common issue but not one to freak about. Good garden practices, vigilance and response. Tomatoes are hardy buggers and when stressed respond by flowering and setting fruit to try to reproduce as quickly as possible. Not a bad strategy on their behalf #septorialeafspot #organicgardening #tomatodiseases #growingtomatoesorganically
24.01.2022 Heartsease a wild pansy with medicinal uses. It has a huge list of common names including Cuddle Me, Jackjump-up-and-kiss-me and Kiss-her-in-the-buttery. Considering we don't have butterys anymore it might be misconstrued Used as an expectorant and a poultice for eczema its leaves can be used in place of litmus in acid/alkali tests. Hmmmm, must have a wee play with that... Plants, fascinating life forms. ... #heartsease #wildpansy #viola #seedfreaks #medicinalherbs
24.01.2022 RIP. Dust. You're the only goat we've ever known who liked to sit like a dog. Daughter to Solo, mother to twins Dem and Dirt, and niece to Pixie, who was born only minutes before you. We'll look after your boys and make sure, when they're ready, they go to good homes. You were a great mum if only for two days.
18.01.2022 Nice hanging out in the glasshouse with the Trevster sticking labels on Tommies, squashing the odd slug and listening to an audiobook by Bob Quinn, Grain By Grain: A quest to Revive Ancient Wheat.
17.01.2022 Showing off the dirt under my fingernails again, but also the improved labelling for this year's Tomato Seedling sale. More info and a bit more rigorous than previous attempts. Over 4000 tomato seedlings. We won't run out Plus the capsicums, eggplants, chillies, herbs, shoes, cukes, pumpkins, sunflowers. Haven't counted those yet ... Now's the time to admit I've lost a few Sart Rolaise and Sunray in the crowd. Beautiful tomatoes, but no idea where I put them down and they're now masquerading as other varieties. Darn it. And Blue Ambrosia and Campbell's toms lost their tags and... It's anyone's guess which is which. Bugger. Only two seed freakin' weeks away!
17.01.2022 The tiny Sweet Alice, alyssum flowers are already out. On a hot day they emit an insanely honey like fragrance. Probs a reason they attract beneficial insects. Low growing ground cover that suppresses weeds. Supposedly they self seed but we must be doing something wrong, either that or we manage to seed save the lot www.seedfreaks.com.au... #seedfreaks #sweetalice #beneficialinsectattractors
17.01.2022 And we thought wallabies and possums were a problem! :-) https://fb.watch/1GPTmFjYaP/
13.01.2022 The glasshouse this time two years ago. Swipe for tomato Seedling sale set up 2020. I'm just a liddle sick of sticking labels on pots while Iooking out the window at all the bed prep that needs doing. Same thing every year isn't it. Spring madness. Everything needs doing simultaneously.... Seedling sale 7 days away! Over 4000 Tommies. Huge range of chillies and capsicums this year. Hoping to post a list as soon as I've shuffled them around some more. Herbs, cucurbits, corn, sunflowers, eggplants, stuff. Maybe stringing up a hammock out there's not such a bad idea... #tomatoseedlingsale #seedfreaks www.seedfreaks.com.au
12.01.2022 Sad afternoon. A young possum wandered up the driveway in broad daylight. We were alerted by a stampede of freaked out drama queen goats. We knew something was wrong. Assumed it was toxo. But no. First blood was spotted in its ear and then, from a low angle, we noticed it had severe injuries. It's lower jaw is gone, it's tongue also damaged. We rung Bonorong Wildlife Refuge for advice. We took it. A neighbour kindly put it out if it's misery a short time later.... Most likely someone's tried to shoot it and managed only a partial hit. I hope it got some joy out of our apricot tree before it went
11.01.2022 Leaf types on tomatoes vary greatly. This year we have Silver Fir for sale and it has unusually fine cut leaves. As per pic 2. Then there's regular leaves as per pic 1. Typical Tommies. ... Then pic 3 we have Woolley Kate - fuzzy leaves, little white hairs make them look almost grey and yup, Woolley. Even the fruit is finely furred. Pic 5 is potato leaved. Many older varieties of tomato are potato leaved. They're often bush varieties and bigger, beefier toms. They also cross-pollinate more easily due to their more exposed flower anatomy. Pic 6 is a purple tomato variety. They're often purple stemmed too. Pic 7 is a wispy leaf variety. They don't have sturdy stems, they're a bit more delicate. I notice people shun them at Tom sales, perhaps assuming they're not so healthy. They're just doing their thing. Black Icicle, Blush, Cassidy's Folly and Rams Horn are four of those varieties. All horn shaped, perhaps showing their breeding ancestry there. Roberto Carnevale judged Rams Horn as the top tasting tomato at the Huon Producers Network Tomato Festival about five? Years ago. It's great for people who can't eat tomato seeds. They only have a few, and they're easily removed. Don't shun the wispy leaf tomatoes SIX days till the tomato seedling sale. Details on the Seed Freaks FB events page.
11.01.2022 A movie recommendation - just released on Netflix. Adapted from the book of the same name. 'How the food you eat can reverse climate change, heal your body and ultimately save our world.'
10.01.2022 Sitting here contemplating the imperative for garden expansion. Grew heaps of well out of date seed from various donations to discover many are still viable. Now faced with depriving animals of grazing land... Hmmmm. Similar issues at your place? Reposted from @landcare_tasmania
10.01.2022 A free resource for a short period. Relevant to backyard farmers too I'd reckon :-)
05.01.2022 A hot day in Tassie (10 degrees above average) - we knocked off early and headed for a deserted beach to listen to the sound of the waves and to give Dem & Dirt a taste of the beach. We didn't think we meant literally - but they did have a sandy snack or two. Nothing quite as soothing as the sound of wavelets - figured we'd share some of the watery peace.
03.01.2022 Dust is not doing well. If, in the next 24 hours, she doesn't improve we'll have her euthanized. This morning she was lying on her side groaning and thrashing and the hungry kids were using her as a trampoline. She's been given more of everything, a blanket to keep warm, electrolytes and we've bought the kids inside to keep warm (chilly morning) and to stop them using her like a jungle gym. They're sleeping their breakfast off and putting up with the dog who keeps racing in, racing out and yipping at us as if to say, 'dont you know there are goats in the bath?'
02.01.2022 I need to start another Insta page, so many wild birds, animals, snakes and insects around here to glory in. Last night I thought, hmm, the Australian Wild Ducks usually have ducklings about now. Looked out of he window and there they were! They're walking the feet off them. 12 now, but numbers drop quickly. Survival of the fittest. Love watching them. The male does the decoy thing and flies off with a 'bung' wing to distract us from the rest of the family. ... Wild birds - part of the glory of a functioning planet
01.01.2022 And a Currawong because... Why not? #currawongsrule
