11.01.2022 Farming has come a long way, credit where credit is due
11.01.2022 Harvesters are stopped this afternoon due to fire risk. In South Australia we have a Grain Harvesting Code of Practice which along with expected safety protocol...s, has a matrix which consists of temperature, humidity and wind speed over which it is deemed unsafe to continue harvesting. The matrix is based on a maximum Grass Fire Danger Index of 35. As per the example in the table below, if the temperature were 35 degrees C, with humidity at 10% - then harvesting should cease if winds exceed 26 kph (which is GFDI of 35). It's pretty simple and common sense. While most of us carry portable weather meters with us on the headers to monitor the GFDI conditions, we also have a series of Mesonet weather stations being built across the state which are co-funded by individual farmers and government - which have expanded into our district this year. We have a new one on our farm which we are still waiting to become officially online -hopefully very soon. Using the Mesonet network we can not only see the GFDI at those sites, but also the changing weather conditions across the state - allowing us to make better decisions on the risk of harvesting. The second photo shows the GFDI across our region (with the red X being where we were harvesting) about an hour after we pulled up for the day. Officially we were still within the 'safe' range as the wind speed was relatively low, however with the temperature at that point being over 40 degrees C (and is now 43 deg C 3 hrs later) we did not feel it was safe to continue in those conditions. Tomorrow is looking to be a worse day, with extreme temperatures and high winds - so we are not expecting too much harvesting activity then either. A chance to regroup, do some book work, reacquaint ourselves with our families and have some sleep before getting back into it with a vengeance next week. Better to be safe than sorry.

07.01.2022 Reflections from Drew Lyon, Weed Scientist at WSU "It seems our dalliance with herbicides in lieu of crop rotation and other integrated weed management approaches is about to return us to the place where I started my career; a place where we have few, if any, effective herbicide options for the selective control of winter annual and other grass weeds in wheat. I am pretty certain that if we had used these herbicides and herbicide-resistant crops in partnership with crop rotation and diversity, many of these technologies would still be effective. While that horse is out of the barn, as they say, I do think it is a good lesson to keep in mind as new technologies come to the marketplace. When it comes to weed control, simple is often not sustainable."
07.01.2022 "When asked about the current state of weed control in agriculture, the majority of respondents (40%) indicated this was very volatile, as bad as I’ve ever seen it. Another 37% wrote that weed management was volatile, but not as bad as it once was. Only 16% of respondents believed weed control today was better than it had been during prior growing seasons."
06.01.2022 Herbicides represent more than 75 percent of all pest-mitigating chemicals used in conventional agriculture, said Dyer, a professor in the Department of Plant Sciences and Plant Pathology in MSU's College of Agriculture. >> https://buff.ly/3lomPfC

04.01.2022 "Nows the time to find herbicide-resistant weeds. Delaying the development and spread of herbicide-resistant weeds will give farmers more weed control options longer and at less cost."
