25.01.2022 UPDATE 28/08- A potential foster mare has been found. The fostering process will begin tomorrow. Fingers crossed the lil Bub will take to her new mum! Our hea...rtfelt thanks to everyone who has shared our post in the search for a foster mare. The response has been overwhelming. It is so wonderful to see how the horse community pulls together to help each other in times of need. Many thanks to each and every one of you URGENT - FOSTER MARE REQUIRED This little munchkins mum had a very difficult birth on Sunday night and sadly we lost the battle to save her today. 23.01.2022 Let your children fall in love with horses. Let them learn the value of hard work, that good things take time and effort. Let them learn how to fall, how to pic...k themselves up, dust themselves off and get back in the saddle. Let them learn discipline and dedication, that even though it's raining, cold or snowing, horses still need to be cared for and when you make a commitment, you stick to it. Let them learn how to cope with heartbreak and loss, that life can be fleeting and fragile and that sometimes the right decisions are not always the easy ones. Let them learn that there will always be someone with more, but that hard work can get you just as far, even if it takes a little longer. Let them learn than happiness does not always come from the most expensive extravagant things, but sometimes from the little, seemingly insignificant moments. Let them learn that no matter how un-attainable a dream may seem that passion (and a bit more leg) can go a long way. Let your children fall in love with horses, because they will learn lessons in the saddle that no school could ever teach.

18.01.2022 What (in our opinion) is one of the most requested and! most misunderstood topics.... The idea and the practicality of an outstanding Piaffe. We get first compl...imented and second asked about our Piaffe A LOT! A good Piaffe is not a movement nor a trick nor something you perform... It is the defining and characteristic measurement of how your training is going, where you are heading in terms of education and more than that many aspects of the mental state of being of your horse...it is the ultimate question for you as a rider and trainer - Is my horse forward in the brain and are we 100% connected and together? The mechanics of the Piaffe are one thing. Frankly, for me they are not even rocket science (there is faaar more difficult things in equestrian art than teaching a good Piaffe). You need to be able to find and work good, clean and even diagonals, your horse need to be forward on contact!, you need to be able to position and free shoulders and you need a lot of energy. I could go deeper into it but this is the simplest basics. But what is far more important is the mental aspect of the Piaffe that for me makes it interesting and extremely intriguing. In order to consistently, reliably, calmly and happily perform a good Piaffe your horse need to be able to do AND be a few things. First of all it is absolutely mandatory that the horse learned that the energy for this movement comes from within him, meaning he can freely excess his own pool of energy (no physical or mental blocks or contractions). Nothing is worse than these constantly touching (or hitting, let's be honest) people on the floor. You can guide energy that is existing in the right direction, you should not struggle creating it. Second very important thing is that the horse learned that contact means forward and this understanding helps him to position his shoulders in front of the body, not underneath. These days you see many, many forms of a Piaffe all ridden with a backstanding front leg. This mostly is a training issue and needs to be addressed. In only a handful of cases the reason for this is really due to a limiting factor in the mechanic of the horse... Mostly it is a wrong understanding of the idea of Piaffe and an incorrect placement of the shoulders! "Trapping" a horse in a short frame and letting him diagonalize is not a Piaffe, it is a diagonalized movement (sometimes looking very similar but with nearly not the same benefits for the horse and the overall training). The last but most important thing is that the horse mentally has to be "on the bit" in order for fully emerge himself in this physical and mental frame of what it means to piaffe. Piaffe ultimately has to do with letting go, giving up control, trusting and surprisingly with love. I am going to make a rather extreme statement-the biggest, most important and valuable ingredient for developing an amazing Piaffe is love. Love from the trainer towards his horse and love for the details in training and mechanics. But although love from the horse towards life, training and most importantly love for himself. There will be nothing more beautiful, captivating, elegant and correct than a horse "performing" a Piaffe in love with himself and his live. So... This is why for us Piaffe is not "just" a movement, it is everything you are. And that ultimately makes it so beautiful and difficult at the same time

17.01.2022 Indys second time ever in Piaffe training, having only done a few steps last week. This is an amazing achievement for a little OTT that is high behind. All her... laterals, flying changes ect are established so why not. Note High Hands. The high hands are so misunderstood that any new movement like this Piaffe the hand is lifted to ask for the mouth and maintain a soft contact and ask he horse to find balance by seeking the bit lightly without jamming on the tongue, hyoid, jaw, poll, atlas, thus blocking the shoulders and ruining the balance. When she becomes more established in the balance, we will find more Poll flexion will come naturally. If the horse struggles and becomes hollow the high hands are used in what is called an action reaction. The hands as for the corners of the mouth this aids the reflex action the chew. All good contact we want the horse to softly chew to seek the hand and stretch for the bit. The dialogue enables the mouth and jaw to relax this creating the correct biomechanics through the junction points and whole horse. If I asked with low hands at this stage, any loss of balance would create a brace and set off a chain reaction of imbalance, tension, crookedness, and incorrect biomechanics. Doing it with Poll flexion on the second try would create blocked shoulders and ground and handbrake the impulsion. It is a movement with impulsion, balance and refinement. so we dont want to rock the boat literally. Relaxation is the biggest goal, not tension. The horse needs to be thinking forwards at all times, so the low hand brace situation not good when learning. See more

11.01.2022 Had to steal this.... If you give your child a pony, they will want to ride. Youll buy them the best pony you can find, followed by a helmet, boots and all th...e other things pony. You look for a local barn to ride at where you start to socialize with the equestrian communityAnd then life as you know it, will end. Before you know it, they want to show so you find a circuit ..There will be no more lazy weekends watching tv. You will see more sunrises than you ever thought possible. Every spare minute of your time will be spent hauling campers, horse trailers and horses and enduring a crazy addiction to practice for the next show. Your house may be a mess, and your car will be dirty. All because you gave your child a pony. Your weekends will be spent freezing or burning to death on a fold up chair. And their weekends will be spent gaining confidence and friends, learning new skills and having fun and getting dirty!!!! You will be there the day he or she takes the first few steps of canter, the first taste of a jump, first ribbon, first championship. And they will make you SO proud. Other parents will congratulate you, but you feel weird saying thank you because it's not you on the pony, its your child. It's everything that they did, they achieved. And right before your eyes, your little boy/girl will be transformed from the baby who bounced around on their rocking horse into an exceptional young horse enthusiast on the hunt for the next pony finals or maybe even the Olympics! When you give your child a pony , you give them more than just something to ride. You give them a sport, a talent, hope and dreams. Friends, a new family, a place to learn about life, room to grow as a person where they can push their limits, and bravery, and courage, and memories. And they will have ALL of these things, simply because you gave your child a pony. Because you gave your child a pony, you too will develop new/lifelong friendships, developed solely from the same passion for the sport. You will have a equestrian family because you gave your child a pony. Then one day, many years from todaythey will be in their room and a certain trophy will catch their eye. And they will pick it up and realize instantly that when you gave your child a pony, you also gave them a childhood that they would never forget, at this point, you realize that everything you gave up along the way and sacrificed was totally worth it.. All because you gave your child a pony...

06.01.2022 UPDATE: I cant thank everyone enough for your best wishes and sharing of our request for a foster mare. Unfortunately we are a week and a half down the track n...ow so are resigned to hand raising our filly. She never suckled from mum and thinks milk comes from a bottle. I explored all options of fostering, bringing another mare into lactation and hand rearing. Bega is a long way from the major equestrian centres. We will continue with the milk replacer. All my other horses are watching over her devotedly over the fence. I will use an old gelding to help me bring her up hopefully not too bonded to me. We are gradually transitioning from DiVetelact to Wombaroo Milk Replacer. Apart from a tough day a couple of days ago when she reacted badly to the a Rebound Oral paste all is going well . I cant believe how caring the horse world is. THANK YOU EVERYONE! Well what an absolutely devastating time it has been. We lost our beloved All Giving last night foaling. We were with her the whole time with our amazing vet Luke but there was nothing we could do to save her. Miraculously we managed to save her foal. What a delight after such a long night. We have a beautiful strong brown Rubick filly. She has adopted me as her mother which will be a lot of work. If anyone local has lost a foal and has a mare willing to foster please contact me. We have started our bottle feeding and going well so far. I cant believe my puddinghas gone . Bega - Far South Coast of NSW

02.01.2022 The good old days in Oz All kids rode in a snaffle - regardless of whether your pony carted you on a regular basis. Girths were string or cottage craft - leathe...r for showing if you had parents that were serious. Satin or metal chain browbands were awfully fancy. There were three types of rug - canvas NZ, jute/hessian, and cotton Every NZ rug rubbed your ponys shoulders, and hung to one side within five minutes of being put on. Clipping? That was only allowed for show jumpers and very serious hackies. coloured ponies werent as popular, it usually meant your parents knew nothing. Feed was natural - Lucerne chaff, wheaten chaff, steam-rolled barley, pollard, bran and Livamol. Sunflower oil was added to feeds to give a shine to the coat. Grooming by torchlight was necessary Baling twine was used for everything - even tying poles to trees to make jumps Your pony probably knew all the top 20 hits. Everyone read Hoofs n Horns, and The Horse Magazine. Our heroes were Colleen Brook, George Sanna, Vicky Lawrie... actually, they still are If your pony went lame, the farrier was called before the vet and usually cured pony. No one's pony had ulcers or Cushings. We all knew someone who knew someone whose pony had had colic but none of us actually had that pony. Fat ponies lived on thin air and went all day Wormers came in powder form - most ponies knew when it was added to their feed and left the feed uneaten and themselves unwormed. Ponies got drenched every six months and required hobbles and a twitch Bread was not considered normal to feed your pony. Winning at a show gave you rock star status until the next show. Hacking to a show or Pony Club was the norm. Wearing trackydaks over jodhpurs until your class was the norm. We nicked our mums hairspray to keep our rosettes in place. Rosettes were done with rubber bands and the riders showed in blonde wigs. You turned out your pony to the best of your abilities - always plaited with clean tack. Tack was always correct, if you used a curb chain on a pelham/double then you also had a lip strap. Rarely anyone had a proper arena. A flattish bit of the paddock sufficed. Sheepskin numnahs were the norm for shows Stockholm tar was brushed onto the hoof, into the bottom of the hoof and across the frog every day Everyone had gone to school with purple spray stains on their fingers. Long leather boots were only allowed to be worn by adults Christmas lists always consisted of things for the pony - bridle, bit, rug, etc. We wore velvet hats with an elastic chip strap we tucked inside the cap. Back protectors were hideous and secured with a piece of material that looked like a giant nappy. No one wore them. We went out riding without a phone and couldnt tell anyone where we were going as chances are we didnt know ourselves, we were just going out riding. We rode everywhere and it usually included a stop for a paddle pop at a servo or milk bar. There were epic trails that went for miles. Every fallen log had to be jumped. As long as we were back for meal times and before it was dark, our parents didnt worry. Ponies knew their way home if you parted company. We had fun See more

01.01.2022 Further to my post on the large stables, it has been established that it was the Heinz stables in Pittsburg. Their stables were known as equine palaces having t...he finest fo care and attention with steamed heat, elevators for the horses to move them from floor to floor , electric groomers and on the fourth floor open space so the horse could bask in the sun and get fresh air. They had over 150 teams of Percherons in Pittsburg! The picture below of a horse in a foot bath is I presume also from their amazing stables. All this info is thanks to Catriona Melvin. See more
