22.01.2022 What do we lose as our newspapers vanish? Our MD Robbie Sefton notes that without a newspaper, these is no shared record and no scrutiny of community affairs. When we pick up the newspaper for a casual scan we get a sense of what’s happening in the region: the wins, the losses, births, deaths and scandals. We must hope that throughout our own regional communities, newspapers will find a way to survive.

Our MD Robbie had a great chat with David Cornish, Director of the Centre for the Study of Agribusiness (CSA) at Marcus Oldham College, on this very topic for his podcast AgTalk. 18.01.2022 The Woolmark Company continues to set a fine example when it comes to authenticity, quality & sustainability, and for proof, read their latest on traceability. You’ll need a cuppa, it’s a long yarn.

17.01.2022 Could COVID-19 inspire new thinking on issues Australia has been grappling with for decades? Our MD Robbie Sefton considers the benefits of applying the bi-partisan approach our politicians have deployed in their handling of the current pandemic to long-term debates around the likes of the Murray-Darling Basin and land clearing. Does it really need to be ‘winner takes all’ or could the compromise and collaboration we’ve seen come to the fore in recent months offer a new way forward for our nation?

14.01.2022 Our MD Robbie Sefton made an appearance on ABC’s The Drum, to represent and provide insight from rural Australia on pressing topics such as how we are dealing with the fallout of COVID19 in regards to visiting rural areas and government recommendations & restrictions; the pressures and challenges rural students are facing; and the risk to rural industries whom are reliant on casual workers - often backpackers or migrant workers. 13.01.2022 Our MD Robbie Sefton discusses how Australian Agriculture has a goal: to generate $100 billion in farm gate output by 2030. Getting there is going to take all the resourcefulness we’ve got, especially if the effects are to carry well beyond 2030.

13.01.2022 We’ve heard a lot about rural industries’ social license over the past few years, but what is it, actually? In a word, it is trust and it’s easy to lose, and hard to get back. Our MD Robbie Sefton discusses

10.01.2022 Our MD Robbie Sefton discusses how from little things big things grow. And there’s no better living example of this saying than the incredible results achieved by the Better Internet for Rural, Regional and Remote Australia (BIRRR) group founded by two young women from the bush who wanted to fix a problem. A big problem.

10.01.2022 We built infrastructure for the 19th and 20th centuries, and now we need to build it for the 21st Century. Our MD Robbie Sefton touches on how we need to ensure that the project really is going to serve the nation’s interest for decades, if not centuries. Technology and society is changing how we do things in unexpected ways. Today’s multi-generational investment might become tomorrow’s stranded asset if there isn’t clear thinking up-front.

07.01.2022 If nothing else, COVID-19 has reinforced the immense value of digital capability. Our MD Robbie Sefton discusses how many businesses (including Seftons) were able to switch almost seamlessly from physical offices to the digital world and what are the ramifications into the future? Could there also be benefits for regional areas and employment as a result of these changes?

She is heartened by the Basin communities depth of engagement and appreciative of the many helpful submissions and comments received throughout the process. A change of approach is needed to better support communities in the Basin and to shift the focus on outcomes towards more adaptive management where Basin communities have a greater say in matters affecting their future.
